Marc Ecko’s Handbag Collection Features A Blonde Bombshell

AnnaLynne McCord is the face of Marc Ecko’s handbag collection. “AnnaLynne is a proper bombshell,” says Marc Ecko. “She makes my heart skip a beat. She’s got a great sense of style and a good vibe.” Here, makeup artist and M.A.C. Cosmetics’ Director of Makeup Artistry Gregory Arlt tells us how to secure the 90210 actress’ look.

AnnaLynne McCord AnnaLynne McCord

  • I thought it would be great to do a modern spin on the makeup looks worn by classic bombshells like Brigitte Bardot and Ann-Margret. I started by giving AnnaLynne a smokey bronze metallic eye and strong brow, which I balanced out with a soft, glossy beige lip.
  • To make her eyes pop, I used a variety of M.A.C. products. I applied Rice Paper shadow as the base, Mulch and All That Glitters on her lids, Kid in the crease, and then I intensified her brows by filling them in with Cork shadow.
  • The secret to creating AnnaLynne’s smokey eye is to blend, blend, blend. A great smokey eye needs to look smudged, not slapped on. It’s all about using fluffy brushes to help you blend out the edges of shadow.
  • I decided to stick with beige and bronze shades instead of the typical gray or black because it creates a warm and sexy vibe.

Keep your fiery red mane in check with fabulous tips from Suzie Bond of Perfect 5th Salon in Mooresville, NC, and Tania Fredericks of Chumba Concept Salons in Melbourne, Australia.

    • Shade Selection “A bright color needs to ‘go’ with the rest of your hair,” says Bond. “Brown hair and cool blonde hair look great with cool colors like purple, blue, red and pink. Warm blonde shades look good with yellow, gold and orange.”
    • DIY If you’re determined to DIY when it comes to your color, Bond and Fredericks have a few tips. “All of the DIY colors work similarly,” says Bond. “They stain the hair. Because the color can only stain the hair, it’s important to know that the darker your natural haircolor is, the less vibrant the artificial color will be. Fredericks adds that, depending on the color of your hair, you may need to star with bleach. “For a blonde or a very light red head, it’s usually as simple as applying the desired color,” says Fredericks. “However, for a brunette or darker red head, it’s necessary to first pre-lighten sections using bleach. Once light enough, the bleach is rinsed off, the hair is dried and the vibrant color is applied.”
    • Mane Maintenance Bond recommends using a color-safe shampoo, and she also suggests not shampooing everyday. “Water is the enemy!” she says. “Also, try to stay away from high-heat tools like a flat iron.”

Love the idea of going all in with a rich, brunette shade? Color experts give advice on what you should consider before coloring your hair.

    • Selecting A Color “Complexion and eye color will greatly affect your decision on haircolor choice,” asserts All-Nutrient Artistic Team Member Frances London DuBose. “Black hair can be very harsh as can neon colors.” As a general rule of thumb bronze or yellow skin tones and medium or dark eyes look wonderful in copper and warm browns and light complexions with a bluish tone and darker or brighter eye colors can wear darker colors like black and mahogany.
    • Hair Health “The single biggest obstacle in creating a new color is the current health, or lack of health, of the hair,” says Keith Ferguson, All-Nutrient Regional Educator. “Healthy hair can undergo virtually any color change, including using bleach and higher-lift colors. For those with damaged hair, now is not the time for highlights or drastic changes. An accomplished colorist will give you the best options that will not only get your hair back into condition, but will provide you with the best color techniques.”
    • Color Duration “Semi-permanent color is non-peroxide, demi-permanent has a low-volume and permanent uses a 20-volume developer,” explains DuBose about the technicalities of color choices. So, semi-permanent color cannot lighten hair, and the color will last through about six to 12 shampoos. Demi-permanent can lighten the color a little and deposit color so it lasts a bit longer—about 12 to 26 shampoos. Permanent color is just that—you’ve got it until it grows out.

Ready to be a white-hot babe? Make sure you’re getting the best color for your skin tone and tress texture with amazing tips from color experts:

    • Watch Your Tone “If you have an olive complexion, you might want to make sure this light of a blonde is going to be suitable,” advises Douglas David of Douglas Carroll Salon. “If you have a pink or creamy complexion, it’s a go!”
    • Texture Check “I don’t find curly hair looks very good in platinum,” admits Paul Kenneth of Paul Kenneth Salon. “It’s a little bit more involved. Wavy is fine, but I think straight is the best.”
    • Coif Care “This haircolor needs to have a lot of care,” says Stefan Herz of Herz Hair Design. Makr Copeland of Hair Benders Internationalé agrees. “The major thing is upkeep. Depending on what your natural haircolor is, you are probably going to have touch up the color every two to three weeks,” says Copeland. David adds: When you come in for root touch-ups, the actual color needs to be treated, too. Even blondes need to have the color richened up or it begins to look flat.”

At the top of our watch list since Veronica Mars, Kristen Bell has remained one of our favorite blondes in House Of Lies and now The Good Place and the Bad Moms movie series.

When changing up your mane with fabulous color, there are a few things to keep in mind to help maintain your cool new hue…

    • Keep It Up “Using a temporary color shampoo at home can refresh your haircolor,” says Michael Kunz, All-Nutrient Regional Educator. ‘These are water-based, direct dyes that will not lighten or permanently affect your natural pigment. Using products that prevent fading is key to maintaining haircolor. You want to look for ingredients like sunflower seed oil and grape seed extract, which protect against UV damage and other environmental factors.”
    • Root Fix If your roots are showing, Kunz recommends covering them with temporary haircolors in the forms of crayons, creams or powders. “They can be brushed on to blend and conceal the contrast,” he explains. Keith Ferguson, All-Nutrient Regional Educator, also suggests trying a zigzag parting. “This hides roots up to six weeks!”
    • Pick A Technique “Ombré and balayage allow clients to go longer between colorings,” explains Lana Soussan, senior stylist at James Joseph Salon in Boston, MA. “I’m also doing reverse ombrés where the color starts off blonde at the roots and gets darker on the ends. Those fun colors will come into play with temporary color techniques like hair chalking.”

    Makeovers

Shoulder-length locks get a fabulous update in cut, color and style. Vibrant gold and amber highlights are added to a darker base, while length is cut short around the ears and back. Layers on top are left longer to help create a pompadour effect with tons of volume and style panache. Hair by Hair Benders Intl., Chattanooga, TN.

A red-hued bob has bangs snipped in across the forehead, and a bit of tapering along the edges for a more delicate finish. The base red hue is dolled up with apricot highlights to help add in a color pop focused around the face. A few lowlights in a deeper red round out the look for tons of dimension and style appeal. Hair by Hair Benders Intl., Chattanooga, TN.

Subtle changes bring on a new vibe. A blunt cut is transformed into a piecey finish with punch by shattering the edges into layers of varying lengths. The solid orange hue is given a boost of color with a crimson red hue that frames the face and blends effortlessly into the original shade. A glossing serum palmed over the top brings the look shine. Hair by DASS Salon, Atlanta, GA.

Grown-out color gets a revival and the cut joins in the party. The hue is elevated to a bold white-blonde shade with shadowing at the roots. One side of the mane is cut higher, while the other is left lower in an asymmetrical finish. Sleek styling finishes off the updated look with the help of a flat iron (and a sassy tie!). Hair by DASS Salon, Atlanta, GA.

    Urban Chic

    lilac dream

It’s okay to blush–if you’re talking about your hair, that is. This pastel lilac hue washes over a modern bob cut for a distince mane profile without a lot of fuss. The bob shape includes an elevated nape and notched bangs to bring it into today’s trendy world.

Hair by James Hair Fashion Club, Italy.

    pretty piecey

It’s not as sweet and fairy-like as a traditional pixie–this one has a bit of sass to it, and that’s just what you need. Layers are tousled and teased, flipped and cajoled into ruffled silhouette that only gets better the more you tugged your fingers through it.

Hair by James Hair Fashion Club, Italy.

    pomp & circumstance

Full fringe, pompadour crown, long length–the trifecta of a modern look if we’ve ever seen one. A round brush is a definite must, followed by styling spray and even a bobby pin or two to keep lengths tucked behind the ears.

    Short Hair

    cool vibe

Short isn’t always sweet–sometimes it’s fierce with a whole lot of attitude. A symphony of shades melt together for a starburst of color that extends from long layers at the crown, while the super-short back and sides add contrasting detail. A round brush and blow-dryer sets up the look, while a burst of flexible-hold hairspray keeps it going with room for moveability.

Hair by Douglas Carroll Salon, Raleigh, NC.

    pink pixie

As if an adorable pixie wasn’t enough, a pale pinky-peach hue adds even more style to the look! A short back and sides leads into longer length closer to the front, which is pulled upward to show off the delicate shade. Hairspray or styling gel is a must to get that awesome height.

    Hair by Jean-Marc Maniatis, France.

    abbreviated bob

A short-snipped bob is both sophisticated and pretty all at the same time. With length in back skimming the top of the nape and the sides and front cut into tapered layers, the look is short on length but long on gorgeous effect. A round brush and blow-dryer sets the stage, followed by a gently tousling with pomade.

    Hair by VOG Coiffure, France.

    celebrity style

    Julianne Hough

First a dancer, then a judge on Dancing With The Stars, and then Sandy in Grease Live!–we love that Julianne Hough is so versatile, both with her hair and her project!

Though she loves to play with her length, Julianne seriously rocked her short cut. The nape was trimmed a little shorter, but crown layers were left longer on the sides to allow for style versatility. This look involves a side part and feathered layers.

    Curls & Waves

    blonde twirls

A smooth crown gives way to buttery blonde swirls in this gorgeous mane silhouette. Sections of hair are wrapped vertically around the outside of a large-barrel curling iron, then released and allowed to cool. To keep the curl in tact, ringlets are finger-combed through with a touch of styling pomade on fingertips and fluffed for perfection.

Hair by Hairbenders Design Team/Hairbenders Intl., Chattanooga, TN.

    curl rebellion

A riot of curves explodes and twists from every inch of the head, creating a glorious profile of excitement. Natural curls can lead the way, but curling-iron versions can also stand up to the style test. Just keep everything tousled and mist with flexible-hold hairspray to keep curls in motion all day long.

    Hair by Cebado, Barcelona, Spain.

    spiral elegance

There’s something to be said about the definition and long-lasting hold of a hot-roller spiral curl… Individual ringlets are created by wrapping lengths around hot rollers of varying sizes, allowing the rollers to cool completely before removing. A touch of pomade slicked over each spiral tames any awkward flyaways and completely defines each and every spiral curl.

    celebrity style

    Katharine McPhee

Though we originally admired Katharine McPhee mostly on the radio after her turn on American Idol, these days we’re spying on her acting chops and style profile on the television show Scorpion.

Proving you don’t need a ton of curvature to rock a wavy look, Katharine opts for a subtle beachy wave that starts at chin level with only a gentle twist or two before the ends. A quick flip with the flat iron does the job!

    Photo: courtesy CBS.

    Great Bangs

    lash kissing

Bangs so beautifully cut they blend right in, but somehow still stand out as a statement beauty detail. Very long layers kiss the lashes and even head beyond a bit to form a very full fringe. Blow-dry with a round brush, then get ready to peek mysteriously from behind your tress curtain.

Hair by Hairbenders Intl., Chattanooga, TN.

    straight across

Maybe your mom was on to something when she cut those straight-across bangs in the kitchen when you were ten. The trick to making them work for today’s modern cuts is to keep them long, brushing across the eyebrows, and to make sure there’s a tiny bit of notching going on–so the line isn’t completely straight. Style by brushing bangs down and fingering through while blow-drying.

Hair by Hairbenders Intl., Chattanooga, TN.

    on the side

A super-short nape combines with long crown layers for a totally cute pixie with edge. Further advancing the style’s cool vibe is an elongated bang that sweeps low over the eye on one side. A bit of styling gel helps keep the look spikey, while a mist of hairspray will help hold those bangs precisely in place.

Hair by Douglas Carroll Salon, Raleigh, NC.

    celebrity style

    Lisa Rinna

Days Of Our Lives alum Lisa Rinna is famous for her short cut, which we regularly get to see on Real Housewives.

Short and sassy hair pairs beautifully with layered bangs with a hint of an angled side part. A round brush and blow-dry infuses hair with volume, and positions bangs just so. Hint: Brush bangs both to the right and the left while blow-drying for a fuller finish.

    waves for days

So many beachy waves, it’s like the ocean is just a minute away… Texture is scrunched into long layers while blow-drying, after being prepped and set with a beach-inspired styling spritz. If natural waves aren’t formed enough for your liking, a few turns with a larger curling iron can help take you beachside.

    volume up and down

When you have length to work with, you don’t have to choose where to put the volume–you can infuse both the crown and the lengths with extra oomph. A hot-roller set sinks curls deep into the silhouette, which are then brushed through for a soft silhouette.

    smooth moves

Sleek and glossy brunette lengths are twirled with a large curling iron to create jumbo curves that fall past the shoulders. It’s a sultry silhouette that can’t be ignored.

    celebrity style

    Ariana Grande

Singer Ariana Grande keeps us dancing on or toes, and we loved her turn in television’s Scream Queens.

If anyone has a signature look, it’s Ariana, who is rarely seen without her high-placed ponytail and smooth lengths that go on and one. Can’t wait until your own hair grows out to serious lengths? Try adding in a few clip-in extensions for instant satisfaction.
