Cherri Bomb

The girls of Cherri Bomb put the “rock” in rocker chic with their debut album, This Is The End of Control, out now.

Cherri Bomb members (left to right) Julia Pierce, Miranda Miller, Rena Lovelis and Nia Lovelis are accomplished musicians and songwriters, collaborating with their producers in the studio. Next up for the band? A performance at Warped Tour this summer! Here, Sophisticate’s reveals the group’s beauty secrets…

JULIA PIERCE
Plays/Sings:
Lead guitar and vocals.
Mane Moves:
“I have blue extensions—I get blonde 18-inch extensions and dye them blue, then I have my stylist put them in for me all over,” she says. “I dye them different colors of blue—usually an aqua and a darker blue, like the colors of the ocean.”
Makeup Musts: “I use jet-black liner on my top lid and wing it out. And then I do a black smokey eye and sometimes I mix dark blue in there too.”
Must-have Product: “Dry shampoo because I love my hair when it’s smooth and soft and smelling good. When I’m on tour and I don’t have time to wash my hair, I put dry shampoo on it and it saves the day.”

NIA LOVELIS
Plays/Sings:
Drums and vocals.
Mane Moves: “My red hair expresses everything I’m about. Red means so much—it’s anger, passion, love, everything. It’s like all of my emotions in one.”
Makeup Musts: “When I do my makeup, I like to add stripes—in some of the shows you might see that I’ve got two black stripes under my eye. It’s subtle and it just makes my makeup kind of different.”
Fierce Fashion: “I like a lot of striped stuff and I love little fascinators.”

MIRANDA MILLER
Plays/Sings:
Rhythm guitar, keyboards and vocals.
Mane Moves: “My hair really fits my personality because I have blonde on top—a light angelic color—and black underneath.”
Makeup Musts: “If I’m going for a natural or a smokey eye I’ll use my Urban Decay Naked Palette.”
Fierce Fashion: “My fashion style is a mix between Gwen Stefani, Lara Croft and Shirley Manson.”

RENA LOVELIS
Plays/Sings:
Bass, vocals.
Mane Moves: “I have dreadlocked extensions that go down to my upper thigh—I actually want them even longer!” she says. “My mom used to have purple dreadlocks, so she suggested I try them out, so I went to our hairstylist, Lynn Hyndman, and told her to put every color she had in my hair. It came out really well.”

Makeup Musts: “For the eyes I’ll do a purple and black smokey eye. I use mostly M.A.C. products. I also recently go this eyeshadow called Cherry Bomb from Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics.”

Must-Have Product: “A mini straightener for my bangs, which I carry everywhere on tour for when I need it.”

Avoid applying too much hair wax or pomade by lightly smoothing it over the top layer of your hair, then working it through the rest of your strands.

Spice Girls!!!!

Melanie Brown (Scary), Victoria Beckham (Posh), Emma Bunton (Baby), Geri Halliwell (Ginger) and Melanie Chisholm (Sporty) reunited in London today as the Spice Girls! The flirty fivesome were promoting the musical “Viva Forever,” which is based on the Spice Girls’ popular songs. The show opens in December in London, and is being produced by the same folks who brought us “Mama Mia.”

The girls are looking great, right? Maybe one of them will pop in for a special performance… Fingers crossed!

Before using your flat iron, curler or hot rollers, make sure you hair is completely dry. Wet hair is more fragile and vulnerable to damage.

If you have naturally curly or wavy hair, apply a hair oil to dry strands to smooth down the cuticle and aid in the prevention of split ends.

If you want a change (but nothing too drastic), ask your stylist to snip in a few layers. They’ll give your mane extra bounce and may even create a few more styling options.

Keep your ponytail flyaway free by continually using a bristle brush all around the head to keep the hair in a uniform direction. Secure with a rubber band, and if needed, mist with hairspray.

Blot damp hair gently—never rub it back and forth with a towel because it roughs up the hair cuticle and causes frizz.

It’s All About The Hair

Naturally, of course! The new Disney/Pixar movie Brave hits theaters this weekend and it looks like it’s going to be another good one. Our main heroine is Merida (voiced by actress Kelly Mcdonald), who has a fantastic head of hair with a huge mane of red curls. Merida gets into all sorts of trouble and she’s quite the boisterous character, so her tresses had to match—and they had to move.

Enter the magic of CG, and the talented folks who work there. “Merida’s hair is made up of 1,500 individually sculpted curves, distinct points in a three-dimensional space, that are programmed to bounce and interact in relation to one another via a new software system,” Pixar simulation supervisor Claudia Chung explained to the Wall Street Journal. “Another software program was created to make the hair react more realistically to the character’s movements and surroundings.”

We can’t wait to see it larger than life on the big screen!

Do You Want Bangs?

One of the easiest ways to change up your mane style without changing it too much? Bangs! Think Jessica Biel and Taylor Swift, who left the length everywhere but in front and created a whole new style vibe. Of course, figuring out the fringe that’s right for you can sometimes be tricky. Enter master hairstylist Gocha Hawkins, owner of Gocha Salon in Atlanta, GA, who offers this advice on finding the best bang for your buck…and your face!

Round
“Sideswept bangs are the perfect style for a strong, round shape. Keep the bang longer and layered so the appearance is soft, counteracting the wider area of the face. The always trendy blunt bang is also a great look for a woman with a round face; they should have a curved shape, and be thick and impactful.”

Square
“What looks best on square faces is a longer, thicker bang that grazes the eye. The bang should be shortest in the middle and longest on the sides, fading into the face framing strands of your hair. The last thing you want is for your bangs to take away from your eyes or overwhelm your delicate features.”

Heart
“For ladies with heart shaped faces, I recommend the sideswept bang. It is unlike the round face style in that it should be shorter and draw attention to the eye. Try layered, short sideswept bangs; the shorter section shouldn’t go lower than the arch of your eyebrow, and the longest portion should be at the side of the face, at the outer corner of your eye.”

Oval
“With oval-shaped faces, it all depends on the hair’s texture. If hair is thicker, a fringe look that grazes the eyebrows is best. However, if your hair is thinner, you can easily alter the style to face framing bangs that are long enough to be brushed to the side.”

Divide your hair into sections before blow-drying for a professional-looking finish. Use clips to section off hair to dry hair in a neat, controlled manner.

Maksim!

DANCING WITH THE STARS’
MAKSIM CHMERKOVSKIY SWINGS INTO CHICAGO

In celebration of this past Father’s Day weekend, the Timex Intelligent Quartz Collection hosted a vintage Pop-Up Barbershop, where men treated themselves to fresh summer looks and browsed the latest Timex Intelligent Quartz watches. Shoppers, and Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide’s Editor-in-Chief Bonnie L. Krueger, had the opportunity to meet Dancing With The Stars’ superstar dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who stopped by to look for the perfect timepiece for his own father.

The highly-successful, packed event, held at Chicago’s The Shops at North Bridge, by Nordstrom, drew capacity crowds to check out not only the Ukrainian-born dancer, but the sleekly designed Timex Intelligent Quartz Collection on everyman’s wish list.

In the old-school barbershop setting Maks answered some of our more probing questions…

Why Timex for your dad Maks?
“My dad’s insane about punctuality—he should have been a general of the army. It’s all about being on time…you live by it, every single minute of the day. Timex Intelligent Quartz Collection is the perfect gift for my dad.”

You’re so perfectly groomed…is it part of what you must do for Dancing With The Stars?
Job requirement you know (laughs). Besides, I always say a true man is someone you know with dirt under the nails and are unshaven. That’s the way it used to be. Now there is a different genre. You have to be well groomed. It’s a sign of success and presence.”

How much of your look is yours? Or do the producers of DWTS dictate your look?
“No…it’s all mine. I don’t follow the trends. I like what I like. I don’t think I set the trends, although with now the 14th season of Dancing with The Stars and the popularity of the show—I guess we kind of have become trendsetters.”

Right you are Maks! For more of our interview with this more-handsome-in-person star, you’ll have to check out our big anniversary issue, coming soon!

Keep your haircolor fresh longer by rinsing with lukewarm or cooler water because the hotter the water is, the quicker the color loss.

Super Sexy

Supermodel Erin Heatherton looked smashing and sexy on the red carpet at the CFDA awards. How did she get that way? With help from Celebrity Makeup Artist Quinn Murphy and Hair Stylist Brent Lawler. Here are their steps for achieving Erin’s look…

HAIR
Erin’s tresses were given lift and body with Victoria’s Secret So Sexy Style Body & Hold Volumizing Mousse, then tresses were blow-dried upside down. Ends were curled with a 1″ curling iron. A bit more crown height was achieved by backcombing at the roots. Locks were then gathered at the crown and secured into a ponytail at ear level with an elastic hair tie; the elastic was covered with a small piece of hair wrapped around the base and secured with a hair pin. For extra fullness, the base of the ponytail was backcombed and misted with So Sexy Style Hold & Finish Hairspray.

MAKEUP
Erin’s bronzed bombshell look was achieved with VS PRO Radiant FX Face Illuminator, applied everywhere the sun naturally hits—forehead, tops of cheekbones, bridge of nose and tip of chin—followed with a bronzing powder under cheekbones and tip of the chin, and a dusting of blush. A dark chocolate eyeliner defined the upper and lower lashlines, and a chestnut shimmery eyeshadow was blended along the lid before a dose of black mascara. A swipe of VS Makeup Lip Gloss in Intimate finished the sexy look.

Your turn!

Avoid leaving dents in your hair while flat-ironing by moving down each hair section in smooth passes. Starting and stopping can create unsightly bends.

Pretty Little Singer

If you’re a fan of Pretty Little Liars, you’ll be excited to know that one of your favorite girls is hitting the recording studio. And if you haven’t caught PLL fever? You’ll still want to check out Lucy Hale’s upcoming CD!

Lucy actually competed in the American Juniors competition (a spin-off from American Idol) when she was 13. Now 22, she just signed a deal with Hollywood Records (that’s Selena Gomez’s and Grace Potter’s label). The petite brunette shares that she’s excited to “show a whole different side of myself, which is a huge passion for music.”

Lucy on the little screen and on our iPods? Love it!

Flat-iron small sections of hair rather than large chunks. That way, heat is distributed evenly and results are smoother.

The Blonde Budget

If you’re thinking “summer blonde,” but you’re not sure how it will work into your budget, Bruno Etur, master colorist at Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon in Los Angeles has a bit of advice for achieving the golden hue that will be best for your wallet…

SPLURGE
Think: Cameron Diaz
Perfectly blonde, subtly highlighted, with little to no root visibility. The initial “going blonde” process involves changing your overall base color and following with highlights on top. Maintaining this soft and sophisticated look will require a monthly trip to the hair salon for touch-ups.

STEAL
Think: Gisele Bundchen
Effortlessly beachy, with highlights that work with your natural hair hue. To achieve the look, sweeping, soft highlights are painted on to the hair in a process called balayage. Upholding the sun-kissed color requires a visit to your colorist every three months.

Pick the look that’s right for you and head to your colorist. And, hey, let us know—do blondes really have more fun? 😉

Be gentle! Fine hair is easily knotted and requires regular conditioning to avoid breakage during detangling.

Embrace your hair’s natural shine by doing a weekly deep conditioning treatment—when hair is healthy, it’s also shiny.

Always warm up hair waxes and pomades in your hands first—it makes them easier to apply throughout your mane.

Where’s your nozzle and diffuser? A nozzle directs air-flow to give you a better blow-dry while a diffuser allows you to dry curly or wavy hair without causing frizz.

Make sure you’re using the right brush for your style. Large, round brushes straighten long, coarse or curly hair; a medium-sized brush adds body and smoothness to medium-to-long hair; and a small brush gives short hair a volume boost.
