162189967_EM_-006_324FE3F171294D0534F7FB139FCDD133We love a good manicure, and love it even more when it’s unique and beautiful all at once.

162189967_EM_-014_51F040A417CF56E7774C6EECA4129A5CFor the Michael van der Ham Autumn/Winter 2013 runway show, Lead CND Education Ambassador Amanda Fontanarrosa created a distressed manicure resembling tortured, tarnished metal on a sleek chisel-edge almond shape.

“For one of the nail designs, we used CND color in Fedora adorned with a gold and copper leaf pattern,” said Fontanarrosa. “The second look incorporated CND in Midnight Swim and Cityscape with silver leaf patches. Both designs were modern and youthful.”

Give your Natural texture a try! Blow-drying every day can start to deplete your hair’s natural moisture.

Sophisticate’s Blog:           Red-Carpet Hair

One of our favorite parts of watching The Academy Awards is the red carpet—the beautiful dresses, the sparkling jewels, the HAIR! We’ve got the backstage scoop on three hot looks from the evening…

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

ADELE

Styled for the red carpet by hairstylist Michael Ashton using John Frieda

STEP BY STEP
1. Towel-dry wet hair to remove excess moisture applying John Frieda Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blow-Out Spray on mid-lengths and ends.
2. Flip hair over and using a blow-dryer, blast hot air down the hair shaft for instant lift at the roots and thickness through the rest of the hair.
3. When hair is about 80% dry, flip your back over and smooth large sections with a medium round brush.
4. Section the hair into quarters. On one quarter, apply a medium-large curling iron tto achieve a contemporary and feminine texture. Next, set in hot rollers. Once cool, carefully brush through hair with a natural bristle brush.
5. Continue for the remaining three sections, ensuring that as you have finished curling each section you pin it in a barrel curl using a sectioning clip while it cools and sets.
6. After 5-10 minutes, remove the sectioning clips and gently tousle hair. Pull half of the hair back and tease at the crown, securing pieces together in the back of the head. Leave down two small sections of hair to frame the face. Mist John Frieda Luxurious Volume All-Day Hold Hairspray for a long-lasting finish.

CHARLIZE THERON

Styled for the red carpet by hairstylist Enzo Angileri using Wella Professionals

1. After washing and conditioning hair, apply Wella Professionals Natural Volume Styling Mousse to wet hair and direct to shape the silhouette.
2. Blow-dry hair with a diffuser until it’s 100% dry and in place.
3. Rake hair down with a brush following the part and shape of the head, leaving volume at the crown.
4. Use Wella Professionals Shape Shift Molding Gum to mold the hair and create a texturized look and feel.
5. Finish with a light mist of Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight Shine Spray to give hair luminosity.

Screen Shot 2013-02-24 at 10.07.12 PM

ISLA FISHER

Styled for the red carpet by hairstylist Marcus Francis using Wella Professionals

STEP BY STEP
1. To wet hair, apply Wella Professional Flowing Form Smoothing Balm section by section and blow-dry with a medium size round brush.
2. Create your part for the section you’re pulling back by starting at the arch of each eyebrow, and continue back to the crown. Flat-iron each section from roots to ends.
3. Secure the section pulled back by using a bobby pin on each side at the crown. Slide the pin underneath the top layer of the hair to anchor without slipping.
4. Use a quarter size amount of Wella Professionals Mirror Polish Shine Serum and take through with your fingers to seal the ends and add shine.
5. For added hold, spray Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray at the front and at the section pulled back.

Sophisticate’s Blog:               5 Fab Reasons To Go Short

If you’ve been thinking of changing up your mane look, consider a short snip. Not sure? Here are 5 fabulous reasons why an abbreviated cut might just be your next awesome mane look…

at the 'Oz THe Great and Powerful!' World Premiere

1. Michelle Williams

There’s something about Michelle with her trademark pixie cut that we—and everyone else!—just loves. The star plays with the overall silhouette, proving short can be as versatile as long.

at the 2013 People's Choice Awards Arrivals, Nokia Theater, Los Angeles, CA 01-09-13

2. Julianne  Hough

The dancer turned actress used to have flowing locks on Dancing With The Stars, but has been trying out shorter cuts lately, like this one as seen in Safe Haven. Think short can mean full volume? Hah!

arrives at the Palm Springs International FIlm Festival 2011 Awards Gala

3. Carey Mulligan

Carey can almost be called the poster girl for cute short cuts, as its one of the star’s favorite looks. We’re loving her cute little back flip and baby bangs, which show one way you can dress up a shorter look.

Jenna Elfman/ImageCollect

4. Jenna Elfman

From her days as Dharma on Dharma & Greg, we’ve been big admirers of Jenna’s shorter cuts. Working a short bob, the star shows off how cute a chin-grazing snip can look with a bit of texture.

arrives at the 15th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards

5. Anne Hathaway

Even though her pixie snip was done as part of a movie role (she actually shaved her head while filming Les Miserable!), Anne proves that a short cut can look feminine and edgy, all at the same time.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Idol Color

image003

If you’re watching American Idol, you’ve no doubt admired contestant Haley Johnsen’s cool mane hue. The bold shade was created by Celebrity Hair Stylist & Makeup Artist M’chel Bauxal-Gleason, who used Pravana Vivid (a pro color line).

“The ombre effect I was able to achieve on Haley’s hair was created using Vivids. First I bleached out with 40 volume the red pigment she already had. I then used the balayage technique to paint on the color freehand, using a very small applicator brush; I went from darkest to lightest—violet, wild orchid, magenta and pink. I created an outstanding hair color presentation with a funky effect that I am proud of, and Haley was beyond thrilled.”

Fashion an easy updo by starting with a ponytail first, then twirl it into a bun or pull it in a French twist—a ponytail is a strong base for any updo because elastics can hold better than clips and pins.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Upsweeps At Fashion Week

Screen shot 2013-02-19 at 9.49.17 AM

Bond. James Bond. No, no, no—Bond, as in the Bond collection from LaQuan Smith at New York’s Fashion Week! The super-hot designer has clothed fashion-forward stars like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys and Rihanna, so his Bond collection was highly anticipated.

Screen shot 2013-02-19 at 9.48.57 AMAnd, of course, you can’t have a haute fashion show without haute hair. Smith wanted a look reminiscent of Robin Given’s character in the movie Boomerang, and lead stylist Keith Neal, along with T. Cooper of Metro Look, obliged, working on behalf of Andis to create the futuristic hairstyles.

To create the “victory roll” for all of the models, Cooper first smoothed hair with the Andis Curved Edge Titanium Flat Iron and created bend and texture with Andis Titanium Curling Irons.

Screen shot 2013-02-19 at 9.49.07 AM

Sectioning out the top, the hair on the sides and nape were smoothed and pulled back in a ponytail. The ponytail ends were twisted up to the top of the head, rolled, pinned and sprayed.

To ensure a uniform look, some extensions were curled and added to the victory roll for fullness and volume.

“The Andis Titanium tools heated fast and worked great on all the hair,” says Cooper. “The different heat settings worked perfectly for the multi ethnicities of all the models.”

You can see the photos from the calendar pictured here!

Each calendar month features a different character and a handy hair tip to keep you looking glam all year round.

The calendar is being sold in salon to raise money for the local animal charity, The Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home. To see where their generous donations are going, members of the Hair by JFK team spent the day volunteering at The EDCH.

Screen shot 2013-02-13 at 9.53.10 AMIt’s not only beautiful clothes that come from the designer runway shows at Fashion Week, it’s gorgeous hair, too! Super stylist Christopher Dove created lovely looks for the Peter Som show, and we’ve got all the details right here!

The Collection:  Peter Som Fall 2013 is all about the crazy-quilt eclectic mash-up of early eighties NYC downtowners photographed by Amy Arbus, mixed with the romance of Paris. The beauty inspiration is very strong, yet minimal. The woman who embodies this spirit and wears these clothes makes a sophisticated, bold statement and pays attention to the image she portrays.

Screen shot 2013-02-13 at 9.54.01 AMThe Look: For Peter Som’s Fall 2013 collection, Wella Professionals lead stylist and owner of The Doves salon, Christopher Dove, collaborated with Peter Som to create a hair look that was in balance with the collection featuring high necklines, volume, and structure. The finished hair look was simple and sleek, creating a smaller head shape to complement the silhouette of the clothing.

“For Peter Som’s Fall ’13 collection, I was inspired by Wella’s Screen shot 2013-02-13 at 9.53.46 AMEchotrend, which is all about the introverted, emotional beauty,” shares Dove. “I felt  the hair look should not distract from the beautiful and intricate detail of the clothing. It needed to be simple, sleek, and elegant because that’s the kind of woman who will wear this clothing, but also able to make a bold statement with minimalistic hair and make-up.”

Screen shot 2013-02-13 at 9.52.24 AMGet the Look:

1. Apply Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier to towel dried hair, which primes hair for a smooth finish.

2. Blow-dry hair straight until completely dry to create a healthy canvas for styling.

3. Separate hair in a straight line part either in the center

or a deep side part depending on the direction of natural hair growth.

4. Section hair in the back by pulling the back half of the hair into a tight low ponytail at the nape of the neck.

5. Apply a working hairspray like Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to the surface and use a finishing brush to smooth the surface of hair so there are no bumps.

Screen shot 2013-02-13 at 9.52.40 AM6. Twist the ponytail around like a rope and then around the base to create a knotted bun that’s secured into place with hairpins.

7. The two pieces in the front of the head and each side needs to be twisted in the direction toward the head and then wrapped around the bun before securing in place, making sure to hide the pin keeping the two pieces in place.

8. To keep the hair really slick and free of flyaways and frizz, rub a small amount of Wella Professionals Sculpt Force Flubber Gel in fingertips and then apply to the surface, smoothing down the hair near the part and face framing pieces.

9. For a high-gloss finish, spray about 3-5 pumps of Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight Shine Spray all around the hair.
