Lightening your hair color or adding a few sun-kissed streaks pushes the hair shaft open, increasing overall thickness. Even just a few highlights can give hair an added boost!

Short on time? Skip blow-drying by setting your hair in Velcro rollers, then allowing your strands to air-dry. Presto—bouncy, free-flowing curls!

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Pretty Little Ravenswood

Ravenswood-532x354We’re having a good day. Not only has ABC Family given hit show Pretty Little Liars a fifth season, they’ve announced a spin-off, titled Ravenswood. The official description:

“Ravenswood will center on a town, not far from Rosewood, PA (the home base of Pretty Little Liars), which has suffered under a deadly curse for generations. Five strangers suddenly find themselves connected by this fatal curse and need to dig into the town’s mysterious and terrible history before it’s too late for each of them.”

Judging by the current ladies of Pretty Little Liars:

Don’t straighten your coils every day—embrace them! Over-heat-styling your strands will cause damage over time, leaving them duller and dryer.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Pretty Pony

Ponytails are always a favorite way to wear our hair, so when we see a particularly cute version, we just have to share…

This pony was created by Global Creative Director for Wella Professionals, Eugene Souleiman, along with his talented team, for the Ports 1961 AW’13 runway show. “I wanted to create something very considered but effortless and elegant,” shared the hairdresser.

The finished hair look was the sum of two parts, with a low side parting swept across the forehead to give a puritanical feeling to the look, yet at the back of the head was a flash of elegance in the form of a mini reverse French pleat. “This is more hair design than hair styling,” added Souleiman.

image009Here’s the step-by-step…

1. Spray hair with a smoothing balm and blow-dry with a flat brush, keeping the hair flat and smooth.

2. Make a low side parting and sweep the hair across the forehead and over the ear; secure half the hair in a low pony tail at the nape of the neck, using a covered elastic to secure. Use a soft bristle brush and Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray as you style to keep the hair smooth.

image0013. For the other half of the hair, gently back comb at the roots in the direction of the pony tail, then smooth over with the soft brush towards the ponytail, spraying and brushing as you go.

4. Take the remaining hair and fold into a reverse French pleat, rolling down towards the ponytail, securing the bottom of the pleat into the ponytail and securing with a covered elastic.

5. Spray the hair with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing spray to keep the style in place. Secure the pleat with hair pins if needed.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Spring Forward!

Rear view of woman with wet hair

What’s hot in hair trends for spring and summer? The the expert style team at Chicago’s Maxine Salon weigh in…

Cliff Freeman, Stylist:

  • This upcoming season is all about glamorous styles being translated into everyday looks. Volume is key and hair is cleaner, sleeker and more polished. 60’s and 70’s are coming back this spring & summer – think Brigitte Bardot and the beehive.  Long hair is going up, with buns, twists and braids being staples all season long. If hair does stay down, volumized, polished blowouts will ensure your hair is ahead of the style curve.
  • Androgynous look for women, with short, textured cuts creating a structured look for women.  A short, straight cut is another way to achieve this season’s clean, glamorous look.

Rex Jimieson, Colorist:

  • As haircuts are going towards stronger silhouettes, with big shapes and volume, the perfect match for this shape-centric look is natural elements in color, especially golds, coppers, and rose golds.  Iridescent sheens, as opposed to bold colors create a softer, natural look to make the glamorous styles of spring and summer more everyday-friendly.
  • Balayage, the art of hair painting, will take over the season, providing a softer, gradient look for color; steering away from the recent new explosion of the bold ombre color technique.

Leslie Shores, Colorist:

  • Another key to staying ahead this season is creative placement with natural color.  For example, adding balayage color to deep parts, creating more dimension in a natural way.

And For The Guys… Aaron David, Stylist:

  • Old-school vintage looks are the new big thing this season. Men are wearing their hair combed with deep side parts, very clean cut and tapered, while being disconnected and perfectly coiffed.
  • Another way for men to keep the hair off their face this season is to sport longer, shaggier locks on the sides and top, with hair pushed back off the face.  Overall, neatly combed and out of the eyes is big this spring and summer.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Molly’s Beauty Secrets

Screen shot 2013-03-07 at 9.51.43 AMMolly Sims knows flaunting dewy, luminescent skin is a must, and the actress/model and new face of Pond’s is here to share her get-radiant secrets with Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide—and you!

* “I start the day off with a green juice to kick start my morning. It keeps me energized and does wonders for my complexion.”

* “Early morning exercise puts color on my cheeks and improves my whole body circulation.  A great workout also helps to enhance my skin color and complexion.”

* “For great circulation and even tone skin, I recommend exfoliating your face, body and even your lips.  It can leave you looking good and feeling radiant in no time.”

* “Taming stress is important to help you look your best.  I use regular breathing exercises to help keep me calm and centered.”

* “Every woman can look luminous inside and out – but great lighting can help, too.  One trick I’ve learned before snapping a photo is to step away from overhead lights to avoid shadows on the face.”

An extra bonus for your beauty bag? Pond’s Luminous Line, which includes a Wet Cleansing Towelette, moisturizer and collection of cleansers. “Every day is a photo opportunity so I always want my skin to look its best,” Sims reveals. “I love the new [luminous-enhancing products]—they make my skin look bright and beautiful so I am always camera-ready.”

Get a rocker-chic bob by keeping hair perfectly straight with a blow dryer and flat iron. Then, add a little shine to the bangs to keep the look from getting too severe.

Turn up the heat! Many volume-enhancing products are heat activated, so air-drying will not make the most of their lifting effect! Instead, let aim warm air at your roots, activating the stylers and giving your snip the oomph you want!

Amp up your go-to bobby pins by spritzing them with dry shampoo—the spray’s powdery texture gives the pin extra grip, which keeps it from sliding out!

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Beauty Lounging

Let’s peek in on the celebrities at the 2013 Film Independent Spirit Awards, where GKhair created a lounge backstage for stars to check out their products and try them out…

qStars were treated to GKhair’s Dry Shampoo, Light Hold Hair Spray, Shaping Wax, Serum and Mini-Tamer Iron.

Nine-year-old Beasts of the Southern Wild actress Quvenzhané Wallis immediately spotted her pick: the mini flat iron, telling her mother, “Mama, I need this,” quickly placing the tool in her famous (and cute!) puppy purse.

Use a diffuser to blow-dry your curly strands until they’re mostly dry, but not all the way — it’s good to let a few curls dry on their own for a more natural texture.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Runway Hair: Cool Fluidity

Screen shot 2013-03-06 at 9.00.31 AMThe hair look at the Vanessa Bruno AW 13 show in Paris was a lesson in controlled casualness. “I wanted to create a hair look that had the cleanness of minimalism yet gives the feeling of looseness and sensuality,” describes hairstylist Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director, Care & Styling, Wella Professionals. “This is the first time I have worked for Vanessa Bruno and when we met to discuss the look we had great synergy and both wanted the same thing, something cool and uncontrived but with subtle touches of detail.”

Screen shot 2013-03-06 at 9.00.58 AMHowever, creating a hairstyle that looks this laid back and cool, takes a surprising amount of work. “It’s all about the ‘prep.’ You need to get the basics right; you need to start with hair that’s freshly washed and in great condition. Then you need a good blow dry. I used Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier on wet hair before blow drying, it acts as a primer and helps to give a natural satin finish to the hair.”

Get the Look:
1. Start with clean freshly washed and conditioned hair, using Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner, to ensure hair is in perfect condition.
Screen shot 2013-03-06 at 8.59.44 AM2. Apply Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier Hair Primer to wet hair and blow dry with a round brush keeping the hair flat to the head
3. Create a center parting and using a fine tooth comb, comb the hair through to create a smooth finish and position behind the ear.
Screen shot 2013-03-06 at 8.59.26 AM

4. Release a small piece of hair on both sides of the front of the head so they fall in front of the ears.
5. Spray Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray on the end lengths of the hair from the ear bone downwards, then gently twist the long hair and apply heat from a blow dryer with a diffuser – this will allow the hair to ‘set’ and provide a raw contrasting texture to the hair.
6. If time allows, clip the twist in place loosely for a little more texture, and release when ready.

It’s Wear-A-Ballerina-Bun-To-Work Day! (Not really, but we’re always big fans of this style!) Sweep hair high onto head, comb back so the hair is sleek and tidy. Wrap the lengths in a tight bun and fix with pins and hairspray.

Hair Tip of the Day – Mar 5

Mar 5

Forget towel-drying. It only roughs up the texture of your hair and causes frizz. Instead, blot with a microfiber towel and then wrap it around your head to soak up excess moisture.
