If your haircolor is growing out at the roots, stagger your part on the diagonal. It will scatter the color and distract the eye from seeing a regrowth line.

Round faces are youthful so create a streamlined look for added sophistication. Using a flat iron to straighten wide, thick sections will tame frizz and smooth hair without making it too flat.

Sophisticate’s Blog:                 Throwback Thursday:     Sarah Lancaster

Screen shot 2013-06-27 at 8.39.33 AM

Long gone are the days of Saved by the Bell: The New Class and long gone are the days of Sarah Lancaster’s golden locks! SHG shot Sarah back in 1995 (that’s her above, with co-star Natalia Cigliuti), and even though her hair has changed (drastically!) she’s still as gorgeous as ever. Her now chestnut-hued long-layered locks frame her face for a stunning silhouette.

Screen shot 2013-06-27 at 8.39.22 AM

So what has Sarah been up to since her days as Rachel Meyers in SBTB? She’s had recurring roles as Madison Kellner on The WB’s Everwood, as Marjorie in ABC’s What About Brian and most recently, as Ellie Bartowski in NBC’s Chuck.

This brunette beauty’s claim to fame may have started on TV, but she’s now taking over the big screen. She’s been cast to star alongside Robert Downey Jr. in Warner Bros.’ new flick The Judge, a film that centers on a high-powered attorney who returns to his hometown for his mother’s funeral only to discover that his father (who’s the town’s judge) is suspected of her murder. Can you say d-r-a-m-a? Even though the flick (also starring Leighton Meester and Dax Shepard) won’t be released until next year, we’re already excited! Are you?

Prep your glam style at home by applying volumizing spray to damp locks and blow-drying, section by section, with a medium round brush.

Sophisticate’s Blog:           Old-Hollywood Glamour

Screen shot 2013-06-26 at 9.23.54 AM

Miss Wyoming USA 2013, Courtney Gifford, shows off the perfect way to wear finger waves in a modern glamour moment.

There is no
denying that
hairstyles in the
1920s were super chic,
especially after
seeing how
fabulous Carey
Mulligan looked
as Daisy in The
Great Gatsby
. (Yes, we admit that we were
totally jealous
of her stunning,
old-school style!)
Are you ready to get your Hollywood-
glam look on with classic finger waves?
Celeb hair guru
Giannandera
tells us how…

1. Begin by applying a volumizing balm (try ECRU New York Marine Thickening Balm) throughout wet hair to create overall volume. Create a deep side part and blow-dry the hair on the side with the part backward and the other side forward toward the face.

2. Once hair is dry, divide it into small sections and use a small curling iron to create waves. Spray each section with a styling spray to set the waves.

3. After the head is completely waved, brush the hair downward multiple times to bring together the waved sections. Smooth a texturizing balm (try Ecru Silk Texturizing Balm) throughout hair to create shine and definition.

4. Lastly, brush hair once more and shape into finger waves with hands. Set the waves with long clips for 15 minutes. Finish the style by removing the clips and setting in place with a sunlight finishing spray.

A great cut is something that suits you hair type, personality and lifestyle, and it should be easy to maintain.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Blonde Ambition

Screen shot 2013-06-25 at 9.08.42 AMDo blondes really have more fun? Summer is the perfect time to find out! When it comes to honey-hued locks, age is limitless! You’re never too young or too old to be a golden glamour girl. Celebrity hair stylist Nelson Chan gives the lowdown on this season’s chicest color.

“This summer, I prefer golden medium blonde, and warmer tones, which are great for helping women look younger because they make complexions look alive and youthful,” says celebrity stylist Nelson Chan, founder of Nelson j Salon in Beverly Hills, which recently launched a new Color Touch Up Bar for retouching roots in 15 minutes. “I suggest going for a blonde shade with warm, golden undertones like Naomi Watts,” says Chan. “Or else using Ombre to achieve a more natural look.”

Ash blondes look amazing on women in their twenties, but the hue should be avoided for blonde bombshells over forty. “The problem is ash color has cool undertones, which can look almost gray, and very unappealing when you’re already old enough to have gray hair,” Chan advises.

For actress Heather Graham’s recent promotion of Hangover Part III, Chan gave her hair a light sandy golden blonde color with soft Ombre, baby blonde highlights. “I wanted to give her a sexy, beachy look, as if she had spent some nice hours in the sun and achieved her highlights naturally. While Ombre continues to reign supreme this year, it is a much less dramatic look than last year. It’s best to keep hair light on the ends but avoid going too dark at the roots.”

Love accessories? Avoid breakage by using cloth-covered elastic bands without the metal casing. Be kind to your hair and it will look fabulous, even in a simple ponytail.

Sophisticate’s Blog:           Are You Better Off Red?

Screen shot 2013-06-24 at 8.31.37 AM

Who wouldn’t want to be a ravishing red head? Celebs like Emma Stone, Christina Hendrix, Isla Fisher and Florence Welch have shown us that this haute hair color is ultra chic! And what’s even better? There are endless shades to choose from. Want to be a crimson cutie, a radiant ruby or a strawberry-blonde beauty? We thought so! Here are the red rules from the haircolor experts at Matrix…

1. Skin in the game. If you love to set up your friends, you know better than to introduce your hemp-wearing, hippie cousin to your fashionista best friend. When it comes to red haircolor, the right match starts with your skin. If you’re a fair, peach-skinned beauty with light eyes, choose a strawberry blonde or light copper color. If you’re fair with cool undertones, go for a medium auburn. Olive and dark complexions can rock cool reds like burgundy and violet-based reds. Not sure if your complexion is cool or warm? The answer could be in your jewelry box. If you gravitate toward gold, you’re probably warm; if you love silver, you’re on the cool side.

2. Highs and lows. Look closely at a real redhead and you’ll see lots of different shades —copper, gold, auburn. To avoid fake-looking red color, your stylist will combine several shades—perhaps a darker auburn at the roots, gradually lightening to a twinkly copper on the ends with some golden highlights thrown in here and there—just like a natural redhead!

3. Glaze over. Reds rock when they’re vibrant and intense. When they’re faded and flat… not so much. An ammonia-free formula like Matrix ColorInsider keeps reds shimmering in high definition, without damaging or drying out your hair. Plan to visit your stylist regularly for refreshing red glazing treatments to keep your new red hue at its optimum intensity!

Give your mane a little boost with voluminous curls. The trick is to let the spirals cool completely before you brush through them so they don’t lose shape.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Pretty In Punk

It’s time to embrace the fact that punk is in! Celebrities like Miley Cyrus and P!nk have been rocking the look, and they’ve never looked better! Hollywood’s hottest celebrities even got on board with the trend for the 2013 Met Gala back in May, and the result was nothing short of amazing. So, are you ready to get on board with this rock star-chic look? With the help of Matrix, we’ll tell you how!

Screen shot 2013-06-21 at 8.48.22 AMRock the ‘hawk.  Mohawks, Slant Hawks, Bi-Hawks, Mini Mos—all of these Punk styles have one thing in common—tightly cropped or shaved sides with a magnificent vertical crest. To get a celeb-inspired look, slick your hair into a bun on the top of her head, run a medium-sized braid along the back, extending it down the center from the base of the bun to the nape. The result: a crisp, embellished, Mohawk-style silhouette!
Tip:  For Punk-worthy firm hold and shine, try Matrix Biolage Sculpting Jelly.

Screen shot 2013-06-21 at 8.47.55 AMDisplay Your True ColorsThe modern interpretation of Punk hair color is a little more subtle—a few peek-a-boo slices of turquoise or mint, perhaps, or even golden highlights tracing the curves of your chocolate brown layers.
Tip: If you’re prone to frequently changing up your “true colors,” ask your stylist about new, ammonia-free Matrix ColorInsider.

Screen shot 2013-06-21 at 8.47.00 AM

Embrace the Uneven.  Hardcore Punks embraced the half-and-half—shaving or dying one entire side of their heads.  For an asymmetrical style, gather your hair tightly into two looped ponytails in the back and allow a large, fringe section to sweep over to one side (just enough to graze the eye).
Tip:  Icy blonde hair color projects edgy flair. New Total Results Blonde Care coddles platinum locks weightlessly, leaving them soft and brilliant.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Gatsby Glamour

With Daisy and Jay reprising their classic love story in the latest film version of The Great Gatsby, flapper-era chic is all the rage. Want to add some Gatsby-style glamour to your style?  Here are some tips from Matrix…and all that jazz!

A Gatsby

Make Waves.  In the ‘20s, luscious finger waves owned the hair style spotlight. To create the modern version, start by misting dry strands with a heat protection formula like Matrix Biolage Thermal Active Setting Spray. Divide your hair into 1-inch horizontal sections and wind each section horizontally around a curling wand or closed iron. Clip each curl in place, let your hair cool, then unfurl the coils. Gently brush out the waves, backcomb with a medium-tooth comb to encourage party-all-night fullness and mist with Biolage Freeze Fix Hairspray.

B Gatsby

Curl Up.  Looking for a Daisy-licious long hairstyle? Try curling and then coiling your long locks.  Part your hair down the side, work in a few drops of Biolage Exquisite Oil Treatment to keep strands sleek, and form three “flapper curves,” starting from your hairline and working back. Gather the rest of your hair into a side pony, coil it into a tight bun, secure and spritz with Matrix Total Results Amplify Hairspray.

C Gatsby

Commit to the Cut.  Ready to go full-Gatsby? Ask your hair stylist to create a side-parted, jaw-length, blunt bob haircut with crisp edges. To style the look, apply Total Results Sleek Blow Down Leave-In Cream to damp hair and blow dry. Smooth strands with a flat iron for a head-hugging effect and pop on a glittery headband for true ‘20s authenticity.

Hair Tip of the Day – Jun 5

To maintain your mane the day after shampooing, sleep with your hair in a light, loose ponytail. Tackle any greasiness with a light sprinkle of dry shampoo.

Hair Tip of the Day – Jun 4

Need an extra boost? Blow-dry hair upside down for lots of body and volume!
