Sophisticate’s Blog:             DIY Summer Beauty

Summer is officially in full swing with warm weather, short shorts and lots of swimming! But, all that summer fun brings a beating to your luxurious locks and flawless face. Luckily, Josie Feria, Director of Spa Operations at Lapis Spa at the Fontainebleau, in Miami Beach, FL, will whip your hair and skin back in shape with these spa-inspired DIY tricks…

Screen shot 2013-07-31 at 4.02.56 PM DIY Treatment For A Touchable Face

1. Prepare a pot of boiling water with several bags of chamomile tea; allow tea to steep and release benefits into water.

2. Place face over steaming pot and cover head with towel to trap steam. You are stimulating the benefits of a steam room.

3. Remove face from steam and place cucumbers or icy, damp chamomile tea bags on eyes to reduce puffiness.

4. Dab off excess moisture and apply scrub cream to face in gentle circular and upward motions to face, neck and chest. Place emphasis on chin, jaw and neck to help lift any ingrown facial hairs.

5. Rinse thoroughly with a warm, moist washcloth and apply witch hazel or rose or lavender water using a spray bottle or a cotton pad.

6. Apply moisture lotion or cream in upward, relaxing massage strokes, placing slight pressure on temples and under forehead bridge line to release tension.

Instant result: clean, shiny skin with improved texture and appearance!

Screen shot 2013-07-31 at 4.03.10 PMDIY Treatment For Healthy Hair

1. Mix lemon juice and warm green tea; apply mixture to scalp with brush or applicator as you separate hair; pour remaining amount through hair.

2. Allow mixture to remain on scalp for a few minutes—the tea and lemon work as an astringent to cleanse scalp and hair follicles.

3. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and apply a combination of plain yogurt and avocado—mix 2 parts fresh avocado and 2 parts yogurt. Massage into the hair in circular motions to relax the scalp and stimulate hair growth.

4. Gently massage temples and base of scalp line. Place plastic shower cap over avocado/yogurt mix on hair and wrap in warm towel for 10 minutes or until towel cools off. Rinse thoroughly.

Instant result: hair that’s softer and shinier, with improved circulation to scalp (an aide to healthy hair growth!).

Screen shot 2013-07-30 at 11.51.56 AM

Whether actress Ashley Benson is starring as Queen Bee Hanna Marin on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars or sizzling on the big screen in Spring Breakers, she’s always turning heads with her tress talent. Ready to steal her style? We’ll give you a sneak peak into all of Ashley’s hair and beauty secrets right here, but be sure to pick up a copy of the latest issue of SHG for all the can’t-miss details.

“I feel more myself when I’m a brunette, to be honest,” Ashley shares. “I love dark hair, dark clothing.”
“When I’m in a rush or on the go, I wear my hair wavy,” reveals Ashley. “First, I work dry shampoo through my hair to get some volume going on, then, using a texture balm, I start to work it through my strands. Lastly, flipping my hair upside-down, I start to crunch my hair with my fingers. I also use a little spray gel so the waves stick—plus, it makes my hair look sleek!”
“A good eyeliner is key,” the star spills. “Nars Eyeliner Stylo is one of my favorites to use.”

Ken Paves
In Your Teens and 20s…
“If there’s ever a time to be adventurous with your hair, it’s when you’re in your [teens and] twenties. While I don’t necessarily like to follow trends, I give [you] a free pass to be ‘trendy’ and experiment with different looks.”

Ken Paves
In Your 30s…
“You know more now than you did when you were younger, and you are getting a better handle on things. I like to think you’re becoming more polished—and your hair should reflect that.”

Ken Paves
In Your 40s…
“I find that many women in their forties resort to getting a haircut like their mothers have. That’s not a bad thing, but you don’t have to get your mom’s haircut now, if ever. Today’s forty is not yesterday’s forty.”

Ken Paves
In Your 50s, 60s, +
“I think it’s particularly important at this time in your life for you to be the one who reminds the world (and yourself) that you’ve still got it!”

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Color Cues

Screen shot 2013-07-18 at 9.54.37 AMFrom Cameron Diaz’s platinum-blonde strands to Jennifer Lopez’s caramel-hued highlights, there are so many gorgeous hair colors to choose from—and now’s the perfect time to give your mane a chic makeover! But, before you take the plunge, there are some dirty deets you’ll need to know. Here, stylist to the stars Danny Jelaca shares his tips on how to avoid common color mistakes…

Don’t go from too light to too dark without filling in the hair pigment first. Filler is used to replace previously lifted hair pigment and allows hair to match your desired color. Then, Danny tells us to “always use semi- or demi- permanent hair color when going dark.” Demi-permanent hair color is ammonia and peroxide-free, unlike permanent color. This means that it will cover the lighter hair completely, but it will only last 4-6 weeks until you need a touch-up.

CameronDiazParamountPicturesFifty Shades of Grey? Avoid using a darker shade than your natural color to cover up grey hairs. Danny advises going a few shades lighter than your natural color to hide those bad boys.

Don’t over-process the color. This means you don’t want to overlap one color onto another. “Hair that has permanent color is sensitized, and overlapping ammonia and peroxide is what causes damage,” Danny tells us. So once you chose a color, stick with it for a few months. Celebs like Lindsey Lohan who change from brunette to blonde to red inflict a lot of damage on their strands that will take years to mend. Danny suggests switching up highlights and lowlights to change the look without touching the all-over color.

Chlorine can make strands seem lighter, but it is actually drying them out. When you’ve been swimming in a pool, you need to rinse your hair immediately.

When blow-drying, rough-dry your hair three quarters of the way before you start styling. You want a little bit of tenacity to the hair before round-brushing.

Sophisticate’s Blog:             D.I.Y. For Dazzling

IS097-004Exposing your locks to the sizzling summer sun can result in serious strand damage, but you don’t need to break the bank to get your tresses back on track. Give your locks some T.L.C. with these 10 simple (and totally free!), D.I.Y. tips from mane maven Mario Russo, owner and lead stylist of Salon Mario Russo in Boston.

1

Take a dryer sheet (unscented!) and lightly rub on head to calm frizz. If you prefer, rub the dryer sheet on a brush first and then use the brush on your hair. Either will help to tame flyaways!

2

Another way to tame frizz and flyaways is to run your hands through your hair after you moisturize your body. The leftover moisturizer on your hands will be just enough to tame flyaways without making your coif greasy!

3

If you’re out of dryer sheets or prefer to keep it simple – spraying your favorite hairspray on a brush and then combing it through hair will also make strands stay in place without being stiff.

4

Feeling build up on your locks? A great at-home clarifying treatment is apple cider vinegar. Take 1 tablespoon and mix with water in a spray bottle. Apply to hair after shampooing and leave on for 5 minutes before rinsing it out.

5

Apply your styling products to damp hair 10 minutes BEFORE blow-drying. This will allow enough time for the product to absorb into your locks and do the work it’s supposed to do!

6

If you have an itchy or dry scalp, Vitamin E can help to ease the irritation. Using a tiny bit of oil from a capsule and applying it on the affected area, will relieve dryness and redness.

7

Need a quick shine fix? Before you step out of the shower, rinse your hair with ice-cold water. This cold water seals the cuticle and will make your hair instantly shinier! Perfect for a night out or special occasion where you want shiny locks.

8

Don’t towel dry! Many women put their damp hair in a towel as they get ready, but the friction from the towel can be a huge frizz creator. Instead, let your hair air dry for best non-frizz results.

9

Never leave the house with wet hair! You won’t necessarily catch a cold, but you could cause hair breakage from the chilly temps and wind.

10

Opt for a silk pillowcase to protect hair as you silk. Cotton pillowcases cause more friction equaling frizz and ridges/indents on hair. A silk pillowcase lets hair glide across it and will help prevent hair snagging and frizz.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Color Envy

The Jenner sisters recently upgraded their haircolor—and their new hues are nothing short of fabulous! Kylie opted for a dramatic, deep brunette while Kendall went for a subtle balayage highlight enhancement of her natural, medium-brown hue. If you’re dying to get revamp your tresses and become a total brunette babe, keep reading! Joico Celebrity Stylist George Papanikolas reveals his color strategies and secrets for Kendall and Kylie’s stunning strands…

Unknown

Kylie
The color request: black hair. But, George didn’t want to go there!  “Black color tends to look too dull and inky,” he explains. “Plus I know how young girls are—they change their haircolor all the time. So I decided to make life easy for myself when she comes back.”

Kylie’s fierce color formula: Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome Demi-Permanent Color ¾ N4 + ¼ N1 + Activator. He applied the formula to Kylie’s Level 5 hair, roots to ends and processed for 20 minutes. “This dark brown formula looks black,” he explains. “But, it’s still shiny and reflective.”

Unknown-1Kendall
The color request: a subtle upgrade of her natural Level 5.5 medium brown, virgin color.

Kendall’s fierce color formula: He created balayage highlights with Joico K-PAK VeroLight Lightener + 40-volume developer. He applied the highlight formula in a v-shape—finer at the roots and midlengths and heavier at the ends–and lifted the color to golden blonde. “It’s best not to lift brunette hair super light,” he explains. Then he glossed all strands roots to ends for five minutes at the bowl with Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome Demi-Permanent Color ½ A7 + ½ A9 + Activator to neutralize any warmth.
