Sophisticate’s Blog:             Naya On The Scene

2013 Teen Choice AwardsGlee star Naya Rivera wowed the crowd with her sexy, leather getup and gorgeous, lengthy locks at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards. Inspired by Naya’s sexy leather Alice + Olivia ensemble, celebrity hairstylist Clyde Haygood gave the young starlet glossy, glamorous loose waves using products from John Frieda Hair Care. Want to steal her stunning style? We have all the details right here, so keep reading!

Step 1 – Prep

  • Clyde applied Frizz-Ease Hair Serum Original Formula to Naya’s wet hair before blow-drying. “We wanted sleek, defined waves. We knew this serum would help give us the sleek, controlled style we were aiming to achieve and keep her hair frizz-free all night long.”

Step 2 – Style

  • Next, Clyde used a curling iron with a 1 and 1/?2 inch barrel. After wrapping each section around the iron, he pinned each curl with a duckbill clip and sprayed Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray to set.

 Step 3 – Perfect

  • Once the curls cooled, Clyde carefully brushed hair out and spritzed Frizz-Ease 100% Shine throughout for definition and added shine. “To replicate the look and feel of the leather outfit, we saturated Naya’s hair with as much of the shine spray as possible for that silky and smooth finish.”

But…that’s not all! Before sharing the results of her big chop on Twitter, Shailene opened up about her lengthy mane on her Tumblr page. “For the past five years I’ve been on an I-want-to-grow-my-hair-as-long-as-possible kick… About half way through my hair-growing escapade, I began to deeply look at WHY I was so keen
BR1sEh3CEAENPUFon creating flowing locks down my spine,” she wrote. “I finally came to the conclusion that hair, for me, was a symbol of strength… For the longest time, I was committed to never chopping it off. Cut to: now. On Saturday, it will be the shortest it’s ever been. And I feel so relieved, so ready, so dedicated.”

We think Shailene looks fabulous with a short snip and we’re so glad she gave her gorgeous strands to a good cause!

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Hairdressers Give Back!

The University of Georgia’s Chi Phi Fraternity (Eta Chapter) was looking for a way to give back to their community and honor the successful completion of their new fraternity house. The 120 brothers wanted to host an event that would put them “a cut above” so they initiated the “Chi Phi Cut-A-Thon,” an inaugural charity even to benefit the Athens Chapter of the American Red Cross (with emphasis on assisting the victims of Hurricane Sandy).

UGA senior, Jesse Codner, the chapter’s secretary and one of the event’s organizers, is the son of celebrity hairstylist Candy Shaw Codner, owner of Atlanta’s Jamison Shaw Hairdressers. “I come from a 50 year lineage of hairdressers and as a group [of] hairdressers, [we] just love giving back,” says Candy. “Our goal was to rely on the skilled hands and talent of hairdressers to reach out through this event and touch the lives of those affected by disaster.”

To host the event, the Chi Phi’s transformed their new dining room into Athens’ “toniest” temporary hair salon, complete with styling stations and a “bobbing for apples” dunk tank to wet the men’s hair in preparation for the cuts. Luckily for the women, the stylists used spray bottles! Sixteen stylists from Atlanta’s Jamison Shaw Hairdressers volunteered their time and traveled to Athens to help make the event possible.

With the involvement of the college’s entire Greek system and the local population, in the span of just three hours the “Chi Phi Salon” performed over 85 haircuts (50 men and 35 women) raising more than $5,000 between the proceeds of the event, raffle ticket sales and alumni and parent contributions. The chapter raised enough money to fully restore the homes of 12 families who experienced the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.

To honor the chapter’s charitable work, the “Chi Phi Cut-A-Thon” received two prestigious awards. The event placed third in the first-annual Wella “Supports Your Cause” Charity Challenge and first place in the 2013 UGA Red Cross “Heroes Challenge.” As third prize winners in the Wella “Supports Your Cause” Charity Challenge, Wella generously donated an additional $1,000 to the Athens Red Cross, raising the total amount raised to more than $6,000.

Even if you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve still heard of the name Kardashian. And while Kris Jenner no longer bears the last name, the mom-ager turned talk show host has made a household name of her own. As if her mega-successful reality show wasn’t enough, the family matriarch is now taking over daytime TV with her talk show KrisSophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide sat down with Hollywood’s hottest mom to get all the deets on her new show and beauty musts and we’re giving you a glimpse right here! For the full (and super fabulous!) interview, pick up a copy of Sophisticate’s October issue—on newsstands now!

Tell us about your famous cut!
“I’ve had short hair for the longest time. I have my hairdresser Alex Roldan and my hairdresser Bernard Ichkanian, who have been doing my hair lately, to thank. Alex cut my hair back in the ‘80s and it was so much fun to do a really short look. I’ve never gone back to long hair, but I think short hair is so versatile—you can get so many great looks. I can have a different hairstyle everyday: I can slick it back, I can brush it forward, I can be edgy and I can be conservative. It’s the best of both worlds.”

What’s your favorite hair length?
“It depends on my mood. Sometimes it’s super short and then sometimes it’s a little bit longer. Right now I’m growing it longer. It’s always going to be short, it’s just different versions of short.”

Have you always been a brunette?
“I was born with jet-black hair and I’ve had the same color my entire life. I’d love to go blonde one day—just for a day. I think I would get a wig.”

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Backstage Pass With       Sarah Hyland

sarah hyland calgonModern Family actress Sarah Hyland takes us away as the face of Heart Calgon, a new collection of four sassy, yet sweet fragrances: Hot Date, Fresh Start, Sweet Crush and Rock Steady. Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide couldn’t help but notice how fabulous her lengthy, chestnut-hued locks looked for the campaign, so we reached out to the star’s mane guru, Glenn Nutley, for the 4-1-1!

“My inspiration for Hot Date was Victoria’s Secret hair with a very full tousled look. I sectioned the hair into a center part and used Sarah Potempa The Beachwaver Rotating Curling Iron to create he waves, always going away from the face.”

“After creating the waves, I brushed out Sarah’s hair and finished with Oribe Superfine Strong Hairspray. Clients always comment on how good it smells, and it’s crushable and buildable.”

“Rock Steady was a lot of fun! First, I pulled Sarah’s hair into a high ponytail, then braided and wrapped it around itself to create a textured topknot. Next, I placed a custom clip-in piece in the front of her hair. Prior to styling, I died the roots of the piece a little darker to match Sarah’s root color.”

“After clipping in the piece to the front of Sarah’s hair, I cut the hair into bangs to create a false fringe. The look was completed with a misting or Oribe Superfine Strong Hairspray.”

Sophisticate’s Blog:                 On The Red Carpet               With Amanda

Screen shot 2013-08-14 at 4.00.59 PMActress Amanda Seyfriend is naturally stunning, but when she gets glam for the red carpet, she’s a total knockout! For the Lovelace Los Angeles premiere, the star, who is a Global Spokesperson for  Clé de Peau Beauté, opted for a sexy smokey eye and a gorgeous, glossed lip to accent her flawless face.

Celebrity makeup artist Georgie Eisdell played up the smokey eye effect by blending and layering lots of shadow and liner (the pro used Clé de Peau Beauté Intensifying Cream Eyeliner in 103, Eye Color Quad in 205 and The Mascara in black), while keeping her skin fresh and clean (using Silky Cream Foundation SPF 23 in I10 and Refining Pressed Powder) and her lips natural looking (with Extra Rich Lipstick in 107).

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Mistresses’ Yunjin Kim

Screen shot 2013-08-13 at 12.59.22 PMActress Yunjin Kim is proving that lightening can strike twice! The South Korean-born beauty was already part of the mega-successful TV show Lost, and now she has found herself on yet another ABC must-see show:
Mistresses. Something tells us it has everything to do with that majestic mane!
Sophisticate’s talked with the natural beauty to get the deets on her tress affair…

How do you like to wear your hair?
My favorite way is straight down. I let my hair dry out naturally and just leave it straight. If I want my hair to be extra straight and silky, I will run the flat iron through it in small pieces and use a little bit of CHI silk infusion.

What do you use to give your hair a little texture?
I use Bed Head Foxy Curls Mousse and curl my hair. It gives it the perfect beach curly look!

A good day for your hair is…
Leaving it alone. When I’m working, [my hair] is getting constant heat or I’m putting products in my hair. On my day off, I like to put a leave-in conditioner in for 30 minutes to keep my hair looking healthy. My favorite conditioner is the Alterna Caviar Hair Masque.

How long do you like to wear your hair?
I prefer my hair short. For a long time, it was long because of Lost. When I do photo shoots, I like to wear a wig or hair piece to get a completely different look!
