Sophisticate’s Blog:         Classic Kate

UnknownThis voluminous, retro updo Kate Beckinsale wore at the Qingdao Oriential Movie Metropolis Launch Ceremony screams stylista! From its hair-raising height to its fierce, face-framing strands, we’re in love with this glam ‘do—and we can’t stop staring! Luckily, hairstylist Sascha Breuer is giving us all the mane details in just four easy steps! Are you ready to rock this look?
  1. Start by smoothing the hair with a straightener and a drop of Wella Professionals Oil Reflections to add shine and smooth the hair out even more.
  2. Continue by taking one-inch sections of hair from around the crown, backcombing each section at a time from the mid lengths of your hair down to Unknown-1your roots, then spray each section lightly with hairspray, for flexible hold.
  3. Next, lightly smooth the backcombed sections and fold them over a pinned hair cushion in the center of the head. Secure the ends of bobby pins.
  4. Add a black headband or embellished necklace to finish off the retro look.

Sophisticate’s Blog:             The High-Performance Ponytail

UntitledThere’s nothing classier than an ultra-sleek style, so when we saw the gorgeous high performance ponytails at the Osklen Spring/Summer 2014 New York Fashion Week Show, we knew we had to get the all the details! Aveda Global Creative Director Antoinete Beenders gives us the lowdown on this luxurious look…

THE INSPIRATION:

“When a gemstone is in the light, only one side of it shines at a time. We recreated that by making just one side of the hair super shiny,” said Beenders. “The collection also features a lot of v-shapes in the necklines, which we recreated in the shape of the hair in the back. It’s a very luxurious collection, so we wanted the hair to be luxurious as well.”

According to Metsavaht, the Osklen aesthetic “represents the lifestyle of modern men and women in a world where the urban and the naturalistic, the global and the local, the organic and the technological co-exist.” This season, Metsavaht utilized ecological silk, crafted through use of cocoons discarded by the industrial process and environmentally safe vegetable dyes.

HOW TO RECREATE:

Untitled1

Step 1: Prep hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother and blow dry straight with a round brush.

Step 2: Flat iron hair in sections, beginning at the back of the head and moving forward. Spray a light coat of hairspray to each section before ironing to ensure a sleek, totally straight finish.

Untitled2

Step 3: Part hair across the crown of the head, creating two sections. Gather the bottom section into a ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with elastic.

Step 4: Part the top section of hair on the right side of the head at a slight diagonal, creating two sections of hair.

Untitled3

Step 5: Separate a small section of hair from the back of the right section with a fine tooth comb. Saturate each section with firm hold hairspray and comb back toward the nape of the neck, tight to the head. Layer each section over the previous to create a sleek, smooth side.

Step 6: Gather this section at the nape and cross over the top of the ponytail and clip.

Step 7: Repeat the process on the left section, but coat each section of hair with light hold hairspray for a softer, contrasting texture.

Untitled4

Step 8: Gather the left section and cross over the ponytail. Release the right side, wrap ends under the ponytail and tie into a knot. Secure with hair pins. Use a flat iron to flatten any loose ends and create a sleek, cohesive ponytail.

Step 9:
Using a color brush, paint the right side of the hair with a generous layer of texturizing gel to create a liquid effect.

Sophisticate’s Blog:             The Fringe Report

Screen shot 2013-09-23 at 3.56.44 PMHaving beautiful bangs is a trend that never fades away. From Hayden Panettiere to Zooey Deschanel, the fringe movement continues to stay relevant on the celebrity scene. When it comes to bangs, there are a ton of style options, but which option is right for you? Mario Russo, owner and lead stylist of Salon Mario Russo in Boston, shares his go-to guide on how to choose the perfect fringe for your face and hair type.

The Blunt Bang

Posh yet oh-so-bold, the blunt bang is one that makes a statement.
Face Type:
For someone with an oval or square face, blunt bangs can be very flattering. To make the style less severe, angle off the sides of the bangs to be a bit longer than the rest of the fringe. This will help to better incorporate your bang into your hairstyle.
Hair Cut/Hair Type:
If done correctly, blunt bangs can compliment both long and short haircuts. Typically, blunt bangs work best on women with thicker hair, so that there is enough hair to work with to really define and shape the bang.
Ask Your Stylist For:
Heavy fringe that dusts just below the eyebrows.

The Side Swept Bang

Versatile and unassuming, the side swept bang compliments many different face and hair types.
Face Type:
A round face can benefit from a side swept bang because it creates a flattering, angular look that will help to make your face appear longer.
Hair Cut/Hair Type:
Whether you have thin or thick hair, side swept bangs can easily be styled and blow-dried off to the side of the face. Make sure your bang is cut thick, so that it doesn’t appear too soft or too wispy, which for a round face, can be unflattering. Side swept bangs work well with both long and short haircuts, especially cuts with layers and angles that provide the hair with more shape and definition.
Ask Your Stylist For:
Soft, feathered bangs that sweep your cheekbone. Ask for a side part verses a center part to create more definition.

The Wispy Bang

Playful and youthful, wispy bangs can be a great choice for someone who doesn’t want to commit to a full bang.
Face Type:
Heart-shaped faces can benefit from wispy fringe because of the way the hair is layered and feathered. This texture softens the shape of the face and wispy bangs are easy to style in mulitple ways – off to the side, towards the face or back.
Hair Cut/Hair Type:
Thinner hair is ideal for light, wispy bangs because it can easily be cut and shaped to compliment the rest of your hairstyle. A mid-length cut with layers and angles is my favorite style to compliment a wispy bang. The combination of the light bang with a layered cut makes for great movement in the hair.
Ask Your Stylist For:
A soft bang that can easily be styled off to the side or pinned back. Incorporating an angular shape to the bang will make it most flattering when worn to the side. The shortest part of the bang should hit around your eyebrow, while the longest should hit around your ear.

LAUREN CONRAD

“Like everyone else I know, I basically taught myself how to do makeup—and created a lot of cringe-worthy photo moments in the process. You’re bound to make a lot of mistakes, but that’s an important part of the learning curve.”

“If I can only put one thing on, it’s mascara. I wear Maybelline New York Full N’ Soft mascara.”

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Runway Hair

What’s better than gorgeous hair? Gorgeous hair with fierce fashion of course and that’s exactly what the Rachel Zoe Spring/Summer 2014 Collection delivered at New York Fashion Week. Here, mane master and Moroccanoil Artistic Director Antonio Corral Calero, dishes on how he created these fabulous, runway-ready styles…

Screen shot 2013-09-18 at 1.42.59 PM

The Inspiration:
For Spring/Summer 2014, Rachel Zoe takes the modern jetset girl on a safari; a traveling muse wearing her femininity with effortless confidence. This collection offers a new take on exotic glamour, incorporating ethereal elements, polished silhouettes, innovative materials, and blending of the classic with the contemporary.

The Hair Look:
For The Rachel Zoe Collection for Spring/Summer 2014, runway stylist Antonio Corral Calero, Moroccanoil Artistic Director, created soft textured, ethereal hair looks that were inspired by windswept safari days and subtle tribal details.

Corral Calero created a deconstructed modern take on the braid, with a contrasting and overlapping tangled textural effect that looked as if hair was styled on-the-go and blown free, loose and waved by the elements. The look was achieved by taking random parts of pre-textured strands, crisscrossing them (like macramé) and tucking them into the back and inside of a low braid.

Screen shot 2013-09-18 at 1.43.21 PM

The Creation:
√ “I started with a foundation of Moroccanoil Treatment on dry hair to condition, strengthen and smooth, then sprayed root boost at the roots starting at the nape, and working up). Also, applying Moroccanoil Treatment on dry hair gave me more traction and grip for the other products that followed.”

Screen shot 2013-09-18 at 1.43.34 PM√ “Molding cream was next. Warming a bit between my fingers, I worked it in from roots to ends. This was a key product for the look, giving it the right semi-matte texture with enough shine. It was important for the hair to look healthy, not too dry.”

“I then blow dried the hair from underneath and lifted hair at the roots using my fingers, letting it dance and tangle under the air flow. It was important not to pull or try to control the hair.”

“When almost dry, and with model’s head bent over, I finger-massaged the hair at the root and lifted it again to intensify the tangled texture.”

√ “I then sectioned the hair from ear to ear and pinned it up while I created a braid with remaining strands at the nape of the neck.”

Screen shot 2013-09-18 at 1.43.49 PM “I released the top hair and then tucked different parts of the various strands into the braid like macramé and blended them in waves, creating a loose, inverse-pyramid shape that was wider on top.”

“Then I softly rotated my palm over the hair to make it lie naturally–creating more flyaways at the top.”

“To add a tribal vibe, I made several little braids placed randomly at the sides.”

“Finally, I took little baby hairs around the hairline and pulled them out – so they would also move as models walked the runway.”

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Carrie!

carrie underwood by randee st. nicholas courtesy PRMusic’s award-winning Carrie Underwood is no stranger to the spotlight. This Oklahoma-native’s gorgeous beauty moves and powerhouse vocals are enough to make heads turn, but it’s her warm, “All-American Girl” personality hat makes Carrie a true beauty—inside and out. CARRIE’S LUXURIOUS LOCKS
♦ “We country folk, we like our big hair. I’m not sure of my reasoning, but that’s the No .1 thing I do, when someone fixes my hair, I put my fingers in it and make it look bigger.”
“Dry shampoo is my quick fix for hiding roots when you don’t have time to get highlights touched up.”

CASUAL CHIC
“I live in sweatpants because I feel like I have to dress up so much. But my hair and makeup are always done because I don’t want to walk by a mirror and think, ‘Oh man, I didn’t even try today.’ People are always looking a bit more closely at me, so want them to think I was in my sweatpants, but still looked cute.”

butter LONDON + Nicole Miller 1

New York Fashion Week may be wrapped up, but that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped obsessing over all of the fierce hair, beauty and style choices. We’re loving these “glitterfall” ombre nails created by butter LONDON’s Global Colour Ambassador, Katie Jane Hughes for the Nicole Miller fashion show. Read on to find out just how she created these standout digits…

Designer: NICOLE MILLER

Lead Manicurist: Katie Jane Hughes, butter LONDON Global Colour Ambassador

The Scoop: The collection was inspired by the opulence, glamour and beauty of Versailles – the gardens, mirrors, mazes and chandeliers.

The Look: Katie first applied a layer butter LONDON’s new Nail Lacquer in The 444. To create a cascading effect she used butter LONDON Nail Lacquer in The Black Knight and applied upward from the tip of the nail. She lightly dabbed the nail lacquer where the two shades met to blend the look. Finally, she reapplied The Black Knight to finish the ombre effect.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         HAIRSTAR!

Screen shot 2013-09-10 at 9.23.03 AMInspiring, creative and passionate are just a few of the words used to describe Sam Villa. Over the past 30 years, the man who grew up in his father’s barbershop and graduated from Ponce Beauty School in San Mateo, CA, has seen his star rise to levels he probably never would have imagined. Here, the international hair superstar gives us a look inside his beautiful world…

Screen shot 2013-09-10 at 9.22.10 AMWhat was your aha moment, when you decided you wanted to be in beauty?
My father took me to see Vidal Sassoon, Christopher Brooker and Roger Thompson in 1976, to see my very first hair show in San Francisco. That was when I decided to become a teacher. Sassoon revolutionized the industry with a pair of scissors and demonstrated courage, disciple and inspiration in everything he did.

Where do you see hair trends going for 2014?
You’re going to see hair a little bit more polished, a little bit more done and not so undone. If you see it undone, it’s going to have a sense of quality to it so it’s not so much just getting out of bed and little it happen. You’ll see a natural movement…a hippie couture.

Screen shot 2013-09-10 at 9.24.07 AMWho are the celebrities you feel influence style today?
Taylor Swift. I love Taylor Swift because she’s always doing something different with her hair, whether it’s up, waved or a fringe. Jennifer Lopez is always great—the glamourous one.

What should every woman know before she goes into her salon?
Communication builds wealth. It’s our professional responsibility to tell women what they should be using. If they are using the wrong product, something like color could fade quickly. I always tell a client if they are looking for a hairdresser, if they see a cut, go up to the person and ask, “Where did you get your hair done, who did it?”

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Trend Report From New York Fashion Week: Aveda

portrait picGet ready for trendy tresses, gorgeous makeup looks because it’s officially New York Fashion Week! Aveda Global Styling Director Allen Ruiz created what he referred to as “urban street style colliding with shiny, modern elegance” for the Ann Yee Spring/Summer 2014 presentation, and we’re bringing you the inside scoop on this runway-ready style…

Yee was inspired “by the history of urban Detroit, Michigan – USA, its current crumbling economic state, combined with an appreciation for the survivalist spirit of the city as it moves towards a transformation. The collection entitled – Resurgence – revels in the structured, metallic elements of the auto industry and the draped, angular silhouettes of the city’s weathered buildings against the skyline.”

GET THE LOOK:

Screen shot 2013-09-09 at 9.38.41 AM

Step 1: Mist dry hair with Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep™ and blow dry straight with a round brush. This will add the texture and grip needed to create this look.

Step 2: Separate out three sections of hair (left, middle, right) and prep the two side sections with styling foam to ensure a clean look that adds shine without build up or weight.

Step 3: Carefully begin to gather hair from the temple and form a tight, delicate braid down to the nape of the neck. Secure with a clear hair tie.

Step 4: Repeat on the other side and tie both sections together at the nape of the neck.

Step 5: Gather the top half of the middle section of hair and begin roll and pin into a structured twist that kisses the braid just behind the ear.

Step 6: Flat iron the remainder of hair to fall over the shoulders and clear hair tie. Use a firm hold hair spray to smooth hair into place for a firm, long lasting hold.

Step 7: Finish the look with a fine mist of shine spray to eliminate flyaways.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Jennifer Aniston

Screen shot 2013-09-05 at 10.26.02 AM

Not only did Jennifer Aniston fall in love with Living Proof’s haircare line, she became its co-owner/spokesperson! Of course, the star is still in full swing with her acting gigs and even though we never miss a change to see Jen’s gorgeous hair on the big screen, it’s nice to get a person look at those famous tresses, straight from the star herself…

Jen’s Style Tips
“I’ll wash my hair, then I put in a styling cream, and then I’ll usually dry it for a while [with a blow-dryer], then I sort of shape it around my face, because I have all these nasty cowlicks. I always go into the crown and give that a little bit of a boost, and then with my hands, I’ll take pieces of it and different brushes and twist it or curl it or do different thins. Every day it’s a different thing.”

Jen’s Tress Envy
“I’ve been that person who brought in a picture to a salon. Mine was Valerie Bertinelli from One Day At A Time. She had that full Farrah Fawcett hair. I didn’t come out with that. Not even close. Gisele Bundchen has beautiful hair…and everything else. I love Kate Moss’s hair. It’s that rolled-out-of-bed look. Somehow she can wear a couture dress and just have that look. I’ve tried to do that, but it doesn’t work. We all want somebody else’s hair.”

Jen’s Advice To You
“Learn how to blow-dry so you don’t rip hair. People are really sloppy with how they start to blow-dry. They don’t section it, and it just breaks. It’s taken me years to learn. I use three different brushes: a big round brush, a medium round brush and a Mason Pearson.”

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Fabulous Fall Hair

With cooling temperatures and leaves beginning to change color, it’s apparent the fall is right around the corner. You might be swapping bikinis for scarves, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your fun-loving, summer strands! Whether you prefer windswept texture or a smooth silhouette, celebrity hairstylist Marc Mena will help transition your tresses with styles that will make this your sexiest season yet!

Screen shot 2013-09-04 at 9.15.11 AMCome Undone
Bring the beach back to your hair by sporting the boho look this season of perfectly imperfect waves. “The key to this look is to not focus on achieving flawless waves. The messier, the better,” says Mena. Start with a smoothing balm while hair is wet to prime, protect and create manageable strands. To achieve the messy look, use a texture styling spray on damp hair, spraying 4-6 inches away, concentrating the mist at the scalp for more volume. With added dimension and thickness, this bed head style is the ultimate no-fuss ‘do.

As temperatures cool down, we may be more reluctant to put our hair up. Mena suggests turning to a low ponytail for a versatile, sophisticated style that allows for a lot of room to play. Start by distributing a style defining cream from root to tip while hair is still wet to make styling a cinch. Part your hair down the middle or to the side, securing hair at the nape of the neck. After clasping with a tie, spritz with hairspray to ensure hair stays in place without restricting the strands.

“One of the boldest looks of the season features a slicked back style, exuding a chic, ultramodern feel,” says Mena. To start, comb smoothing oil through strands immediately after cleansing. Blow-dry as usual with the nozzle facing downward to prevent frizz and ensure smooth hair. Use styling gel to provide lift and volume at the crown, while leaving a “wet” finish.

MAKING UP
“I love putting on makeup and trying different look, but there are days when it’s nice to go natural,” shares Selena about her makeup moves.

RED CARPET COIFS
The star loves to try a variety of styles on the red carpet. How does Selena keep her look gorgeous all night long? “I love Ted Gibson’s hairspray as a go-to. It’s really tiny and fits in my purse. I carry that and a comb so I can tease my hair a little in the restroom wherever I’m at.”
