Sophisticate’s Blog:         Wondrous Waves

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - ArrivalsIf there’s one thing we can guarantee, it’s that soft waves will leave you looking glam and gorgeous! Take a page from actress Rose Byrne and give your short strands an upgrade by adding in captivating curls. Inspired by an image of Bianca Jagger from the late ‘70s, John Frieda International Creative Consultant Harry Josh gave the Bridesmaids star a modern version of the wild waves. Ready to recreate these beautiful, bouncy ringlets? We have all the info you need!

Step 1 – Prep
Josh started by applying Frizz-Ease Hair Serum Original Formula to Rose’s wet hair. “Rose’s recent transformation from brunette to blonde was a drastic change for the hair, which can often cause more frizz and overall unruliness, so it was crucial that we start with this serum for better manageability,” said Josh. Next, in order to add texture to prep the hair for the waves, Josh applied styling mousse throughout in order to create the texture needed for the waves, and blow-dried tresses using the wider nozzle to help build volume.

Step 2 – Style
Josh wrapped Rose’s locks in Velcro rollers and allowed hair to set for 30 minutes. Then, using a curling iron with a 3/4-inch barrel, the mane maven wrapped 1/4-inch sections of hair around the iron horizontally, and in the same direction, and pinned each curl with a duckbill clip to set.

Step 3 – Perfect
To finish, Josh let the waves down and flipped them over to mist firm hold hairspray in order to ensure the style looked perfect all night long.

To get that wind-blown effect, separate strands with your fingers after curling.

Sophisticate’s Blog:             Ana Ortiz

Devious Maids star Ana Ortiz takes old Hollywood glam to new heights with her gorgeous, curled tresses and glowing skin. Sophisticate’s had to find out how to recreate this flawless hair and beauty look, so we went straight to duo behind Ana’s knockout, red carpet style: makeup artist Shiyena and hairstylist Pamela Neal.

1. I dampened and re-dryed the hair as it had been flat ironed previously and flat ironed hair is notoriously hard to curl.
2. I then took small square sections starting at the front hairline, spraying each with White Sands Liquid Texture Firm Hold Thermal Styling Spray and wrapping them around a 1 inch iron, pulling out the iron and pinning the rolled up section securely before moving on to the next section. I wrapped them all in the same direction.
3. The next row of curls I wrapped in the opposite direction, repeating the spraying and pinning on each section. The next row I curled back in the same direction as the first row.
4. Once the whole head was completed in this manner, I took out all the pins and brushed the hair through, coaxing the hair into waves with my fingers. She then ran out of time and I had to let her go so just sprayed it with Davines No. 7 Firm Hairspray!

Prepping the face:
1. I saturated some cotton with the Fleur Blanc toner and gently buffed it in all over her face and neck.
2. I applied serum next and let that dry completely.
3. Then, I spread a thin layer of the Day Cream Creme de Jour all over her face.
4. While that’s absorbing into her skin, I move on to her eyes.

1. I like to always start with the eyes first so I can clean it up easier if they are any eyeshadow fall outs.
2. I gently patted on the Lingerie Pour Les Yeux in Medium on her eyelids to prime the eyes for eyeshadow application.
3. I first dusted the lightest color Linen from the Palette Play in Copper all over her eyelids up to her brow bone.
4. Next, I applied the the color Gilt on her eyelids up to the creases of her eye.
5. I then brushed the darker bronze color Suede on the outer corner of her eyes to achieve the Smokey effect pulling the shadow out to create a more almond/cat eye look.
6. On the top lash line, before I lined it with eyeliner, I lined it with Indigo from the same eyeshadow quad at the lash line and winged it up and darkened the outer corner of her eyes.
7. I then gently lined the top lash line to darken it with Le Joli Crayon in Charbon and used the other end of the liner to blend the line out.
8. I also lined her bottom lash line with Le Joli Crayon in Aubergine and blended it out as well.
9. With the angle brush, I went over and smudged the dark bronze color, Suede, on top of the Aubergine eyeliner (bottom) along with the Charbon eyeliner (top) to soften the lines.
10. I lined the waterline with Le Joli Crayon in Charbon to finish up the smokey eye.
11. I finished the eyes with Eiffel Power Mascara—lots and lots of coats! This mascara doesn’t clump at all so it’s easy to build it up without it looking messy.

1. I cleaned up any eyeshadow fallouts, if there were any at this point.
2. I mixed and applied the Love Me Deux Moisture Tint in Paris and Provence all over her face and down her neck to give it a seamless effect.
3. I then used concealer to spot conceal any blemishes and to highlight under her eyes, bridge of nose and forehead.
4. I lightly filed in her brows with Arch de Triumph in Warm and Dark Brown. She has gorgeous thick brows so not much was needed here.
5. I glided the Vu-On Rouge Color Accent in Bouquet Rose on the apples of her cheeks and blended it up and out toward her temples with my fingers, primarily concentrating on the apples of her cheeks and making sure the color is not blended too much.
6. I then brushed on Belle Poudre in Golden Medium with the Kabuki brush all over her face for the nice HD finish.
7. To finish the look, I used Beaute en Bronze Bronzer Duo in Monaco. I popped cheeks with the pink blush for a hint of shimmer and dusted the face with bronzer.
8. I like to apply the bronzer where the sun would normally hit the face—the forehead, cheek bones, tip of the nose and on the chest.

1. I lined her lips with the Drawmatic Lip Liner in Naked and filled it in with the liner itself.
2. I then layered the Lip Lustre Lipgloss in Demure on top of the liner so her lips look scrumptious.

I sprayed and massaged in Amour D’Ore Body Spray to glisten her arms for that sun kissed glow

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Sophisticate’s On The Scene

DSC02585Wherever there’s beauty, Sophisticate’s is there! Dozens of people—salon owners, stylists, friends, family and local business owners—attended the Chicago launch of Theorie, a line of hair care tools designed for salon professionals, and Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide was on the scene, getting all the details on the fast-growing tool brand.

Theorie’s Carrie Robinson (left) and Salon 1800 owner Helene March.

The launch was held at Salon 1800, an upscale, modern salon located in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. The sleek space was filled with attendees excited to learn more about the product line’s tools and participate in product demonstrations.

Theorie launched in February, selling only to the trade through distribution channels. The brand then made an appearance at 2013 Cosmoprof, which was held in Las Vegas, NV, in July. “We hit the ground running. They were literally in line waiting for us at that show,” says Carrie Robinson, Vice President of Sales for Theorie. “It’s been insane.”

On display at the launch were Theorie’s SAGA Touch flat irons, 4 in One Digital Curling System and SAGA 3100 Hair Dryer, all of which feature smart, innovative designs and incorporate breakthrough technology.

DSC02583“We brainstorm. We’re a small company, so we really pay attention,” says Robinson. “We asked a lot of smart questions from a lot of smart stylists like ‘What’s the first thing that goes on your iron?’ [They responded] ‘When you set it down when it’s hot, it melts the cord.’ So what did we do? Heat-resistant textile cords that are 11 feet vs. nine, so they’re crafty for moving around the chair.”

Robinson says they also wanted to incorporate fashion into the tools’ designs. “We wanted to be the Tom Ford of tools in our industry,” she says of the sleek designs and packaging. “Beauty meets fashion…it’s all about those two coming together.”

Theorie, which is based in Fort Lauderdale, FL, is growing rapidly. If you’re interested in finding out more details about the pro tools, check out online. “We’re having fun. We’re on a great ride,” says Robinson. “It’s been a whirlwind.”

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Winterize Your Hair

iStock_000022986547XSmallIt’s that time of the year! Cool weather is upon us, so it’s time to break out the Uggs and start reevaluating our hair care routine. This winter, say goodbye to dry, lifeless strands with these five easy tips that will leave you with a well-moisturized mane. Mario Russo, owner and lead stylist of Salon Mario Russo, gives the scoop on how to get strands that will stay sexy all season long

D82S_largeBrush Your Hair — Only When It’s Dry
Brushing hair while it’s dry has amazing benefits!

  • Using your favorite brush, ideally one with natural or boar bristles, brush hair from scalp to ends.
  • Brushing hair disperses the oils from your scalp onto the rest of your hair and adds moisture to areas of your hair that tend to be dry during the winter.
  • Brush your hair daily, if not twice a day (morning and night) for best results.

Use a Silk Pillowcase & Add a Humidifier
The term “beauty sleep” is no joke! Switching your pillowcases from cotton to silk can be an easy way to protect and perfect your hair during the winter. Additionally, putting a humidifier in your bedroom will bring moisture back in the air and help your locks.

  • The friction from a cotton pillowcase can add extra frizz and snagging to your hair, whereas, your hair will slide across a silk pillowcase as you sleep and cause less rubbing and friction.
  • Silk pillowcases will also cause less ridges in your hair, which is ideal for someone who showers the night before and doesn’t style their hair in the morning.

Don’t Go Outside with Wet Hair — Always Wear a Hat
Taking this step will help combat frizz and dryness.

  • When you have wet hair, the change from a warm temperature to a cold temperature can cause hair icicles which leads to breakage and split ends.
  • The cold, dry temperatures against wet hair can also add unwanted frizz, especially to the hair that’s closest to your scalp.
  • Always wear a hat or head scarf outside — preferably one with silk lining to avoid undesirable friction/frizz. Hats will also lock in moisture in your locks.

71T41DRED_largeSay “Goodbye” to Towel-Drying — Wrap Damp Hair with a T-Shirt
The thick, ridged cotton of a towel will only add extra frizz and friction to your already dry winter locks. Instead, find an old t-shirt and put it to use!

  • Put the t-shirt on and then pull it over your head, wrapping it like a turban & knotting it around wet locks. Let the smooth cotton of your t-shirt sop up extra water before you blow-dry.
  • Gently unwrap the t-shirt when you’re ready to blow-dry and using only the palms of your hands, apply a smoothing cream to damp locks. Using your fingers is often too aggressive on temperamental dry hair, whereas, the palms of your hand are smooth and will glide across your locks as you apply the product.

Change Your Shampoo & Boost Your Conditioner with Olive Oil
When the temperatures are at their coldest, your hair needs a change in products. Switch out your summer shampoo and conditioner and incorporate one that advertises itself as “hydrating”.

  • Using your new shampoo, cut down on the amount of times per week that you lather up. Every third day is ideal if you can stretch your style that long.
  • Incorporate a leave-in conditioner into your routine and if you can splurge, go to the salon 1 to 2 times a month for a professional deep conditioning treatment.
  • For an at-home boost, add a tablespoon of olive oil or avocado to your conditioner. This will help to seal in moisture and add shine.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Chin-Length Chic!

US-ENTERTAINMENT-EMMY AWARDS-ARRIVALSEveryone knows the bob is timeless, and this chin-length snip worn by Claire Danes at the 65th Annual Emmy Awards shows just how stunning this style can be. As you’re gearing up for glam holiday parties, take a page from Claire’s book and go with a coif that’s captivating and classic. To help you recreate this head-turning ‘do, we’ve enlisted the help of celebrity hairstylist Peter Butler, the visionary behind the actress’s red carpet style…

Step 1 – Prep
Peter applied a few pumps of the Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Formula Hair Serum through Claire’s wet hair and then added styling mousse before blow-drying to give the hair more texture for better workability and hold.

Step 2 – Style
Next, Peter gave Claire a low side part and used a large-barreled curling iron to curlFE_100PercentShine_Clip
eland star’s hair inward, which Peter noted also helped to smooth out her hair’s texture. Peter then created two small pin curls at the nape of Claire’s neck and combed the top of her hair down and under, pinning as needed into the base.

Step 3 – Perfect
Peter finished off the look by tucking the hair on the left side of Claire’s head behind her ear and spritzing a firm hold hairsprayfor hold. To ensure that Claire’s bob glistened under all the lights on the red carpet,Peter also applied a sheer coat of John Frieda Frizz-Ease 100% Shine.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Waves For Days

Brooke Burke always looks stunning but we can’t stop staring at the head-turning, tousled updo she wore to the 2013 Emmy Awards. If you’re dying to recreate this luxe style, you’ve come to the right place! Here, celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Hanousek gives us the play-by-play on how he created Brooke’s red carpet tresses…

BrookeBurke-Emmys1_zpsec8e859aTo create volume and body and hold I applied mousse to towel dried hair.  I used my fingers to create a side part and scrunched waves into the hair. I blow dried the hair with medium heat using a diffuser touching the hair as little as possible while drying so that the waves stay silky and soft.

Using a 1” curling iron I refined the curls on the surface and around the face. To maintain a natural texture I curled each piece of hair in the direction it had dried. Next, I applied a dime size amount of Wen Pomegranate Finishing Treatment Crème throughout the hair to give definition and separation to the curls.

Afterwards, I loosely gathered the hair into a ponytail just above the shoulders twisting the pony up. I pinned the pony band at the nape with bobbie pins and created an anchor for my twisted bun. Then I wrapped up the remaining ends and secured with more pins tucking one side loosely behind the ear. My tip is to always check in the mirror so everything is balanced. To complete the look, pin up any stray curls that seem out of place but don’t over think it. To ensure the hair stays in place for the long night ahead, I finished everything off with mega hold hairspray.

I love doing my own hair so much that I even styled it for my album cover shoot! We wanted to go fun and fresh so I took advantage of my natural waves. My waves are not the type that tame themselves, so I used quite a bit of product to make them “look” effortless. After a wash, I towel dried my hair while using the towel to start the scrunch process from the sides and underneath. I applied a generous amount of Thermafuse Redefiner Curl/Wave Enhancer with my hands while using the scrunch up motion with my claws all over my head (you can also use your favorite mousse or foam). Then, after letting it air-dry for 10-15 minutes, I start the blow-dryer. If your hair is longer, I recommend using the diffuser attachment that comes with most dryers these days. For short hair, just use those hands. While holding up the scrunch full of hair, aim the blow-dryer at the bunch of hair but keep the handle moving so you don’t fry your hair. Flip your head over and continue the process on all sections until hair is 95% dry. Then take a comb and tease at the crown and underneath to give it extra volume. Spritz Aussie Scrunch Spray all over and give it a good final hand scrunch all over. I usually use a flat iron to smooth out my bangs just a bit to soften the look. Add a matte wax to the ends to ease the frizz (I use GHD Sculpting Wax). Then you are playful and sexy and ready for your new adventure.
