Sophisticate’s Blog:                 Hair You Should Wear

Unknown-1

The bubbly’s poured, lights are twinkling, and bling is in the air—and hair!—as the glam season arrives in full force. While those calendars start filling up with events, you can start thinking about how to get festive from head to toe. With the help of glam hair expert Katie Bilovol, TV fashion pro Sydne Summer, All My Children star Brooke Newton and Joico, looking fabulous for the holiday season has never been easier!

When happy hour is on the menu, learn the secret to a double-braid “headband” that turns your hair into its very own accessory.

Step-by-Step Style Guide:

Prep: Set hair with a one-inch curling wand, taking each section twisting hair forward and placing the curling wand behind the hair, wrap the opposite way of the twist. Once section has been curled, take the curl, wrap it and bring it close to the hair, setting it with a pin while the curl is still hot. Undo the pins once the hair has completely cooled down.

1.

Create a part on the heavy side that is just behind the ear. Separate the hair forward, clipping the hair away. Repeat the part on the opposite side. Make sure you have enough crown hair left in the back section for enough volume. Separate the back from the front in a low ponytail. Take the front part, splitting the section creating two halves with a comb. Repeat on the opposite side of the head.

Unknown2.

Separate the back from the front in a low ponytail. Take the front section, splitting the hair vertically creating two halves with a comb. Repeat on the opposite side of the head. If needed, clip the two halves away from each other.

3.

Rub a glossing polish through the fingers, using hands to comb product through the front sections. Start with one side of the front section vertically. With the section take a diagonal piece all the way by the ear and start French braiding across the head framing the face like a headband would. Make sure the braid is braided loosely for a soft appearance. Finish off the braid once you run out of hair on the sides. Fasten with a clear elastic band.

4.

Repeat the French braid starting at the base of the head on the opposite section of hair in the front. Start braiding in the opposite direction of the first braid, finishing off the braid once you run out of hair on the side.

Unknown-25.

Release the back section of the hair and tug the second braid (closer to the back) up to create a crown effect. Secure with criss-cross bobby pins. Repeat this step on the opposite braid. Tuck the braids behind the ear to hide the ends, fastening with bobby pins. Spray back section with a dry spray wax to give hair a little more separation.

6.

For more glamour, curl hair with a wand to add more curls. To finish the look, mist hair with Joico’s Power Spray Fast-Dry Finishing Spray for hold.

Fashion Styling Tips: To keep this edgy-yet-feminine style going from head-to-toe, rock some leather leggings, a cable-knit tank, and—the key to dressing up casual pants or jeans—a blinged-out sequin jacket that shines all night long. Accessorize with studded earrings, or dare to go bare, since the voluminous ‘do actually hides delicate jewelry, then layer on a statement necklace for instant glamour. Day or night, this look works!

Sophisticate’s Blog:                 MAKS IS BACK!

Screen shot 2013-11-26 at 9.50.08 AM
Former Dancing With the Stars pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy has been bringing his sexy, Ukrainian flavor back to primetime—and we’re loving it! The bad boy of ballroom was recently seen stealing the show in Jennifer Lopez’s amazing performance at the 2014 American Music Awards (did you see that lift!?) and as a guest judging on DWTS. Sophisticate’s got a chance to chat with the dance champion, and he gave us all the details on what he loves about women…

On lady locks:
“A woman should look the way she wants to look—the way she feels empowered. It doesn’t matter if her hair is long or short. If a woman likes herself and presents herself in that way, men will like her look, too. I don’t think anybody should look for someone’s approval because it defeats the whole purpose.”

On getting a little intimate…
“You meet someone and the next thing you know, you have a lot of intimacy and the nails come off, the hair extensions come off…so I don’t know if it’s natural hair or if it’s carefully crafted extensions. You just can’t tell!”

Curl from mid-shaft down for a more casual, yet chic, tousled style.

Sophisticate’s Blog:             Thursday Hair

This holiday season, flaunt an easy—yet elegant—coiffure that will have everyone wanting to know your style secrets! The braid-bun blend is a no-fuss ‘do that’s perfect for a daytime casual or nighttime glam look. Ready to learn how to create this must-have mane? Expert stylist Mario Russo of Salon Mario Russo in Boston gives us the low-down…

Unknown1

Begin by blow-drying wet hair to its smoothest state by utilizing a boar bristle brush. For added volume, use a thickening hairspray.

2

Part hair slightly off to the side and begin to French braid the hair starting from the temple of the side with less hair. Continue to braid hair all the way around your head until you reach the spot just beneath the ear on the other side. Once you have reached this point, tie the end of the braid with a clear elastic.

3

Take the side of the hair that has not yet been braided, and use a curling iron to curl the hair away from the face. Make sure to keep these curls loose so they look wavy, and beachy. For even more texture on this side, apply texturizing spray.

Unknown-14

Take a few random pieces from the curled side and form a loose twist over the ear. This is the ear that’s opposite the side of the head where you started your braid.

5

Begin to twist the curled side of your hair and the end of the braid around each other to form a very loose side bun. Secure with bobby pins.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Friday, Saturday, Sunday–You Look Fabulous!

Why rock the same look all weekend when you can be a diverse diva with three different styles! From Friday to Sunday, celebrity hairstylist and Theorie brand ambassador, Lee Rittiner, gives us tress tips on how to switch-up our mane styles with minimal effort. So gear up for a fun, stress-free weekend knowing that your hair will look fabulous!

2FRIDAY: Curled Hair
Give your hair some sexy spirals Friday morning and be sure to spritz with hairspray so they last throughout the day. Hair that’s already been set with a wand or curling iron is easy to transition, so for a nighttime style, pin back your bangs, wear a low ponytail or just finger-tousel and go!

It’s Friday–and we’re in love with Minka Kelly’s curls!

SATURDAY: Best of Bedhead
Is your hair still curled from last night…but no longer cute? Use a temperature controlled flat iron set to low-temp and gently iron out some of the waves, while leaving others. Then lightly brush through leaving a softer look. Use a little dry shampoo all over to give it a grungy 90s feel.

We’ve got Saturday Night Fever with Emma Roberts’ waves.

SUNDAY: Messy Up-Do
Gather your hair into a messy up-do, anything from a ponytail to a bun. Your hair will have great texture by now and will be easy to mold and hold with a few simple bobby pins.

It’s Sunday, Fun-Day with Kaley Cuoco’s fab up-do.

Sophisticate’s Blog:         Hungry For Braids!

Screen shot 2013-11-20 at 4.20.11 PM

Is it Friday yet? Because we really want it to be Friday…The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be in theaters and we’ll be in the front row, watching every move Peeta and Katniss make–and watching every amazing hair profile that flashes larger than life!

But since it’s not Friday yet, we’ll have to make do with pretending to be our own Katniss, complete with a competition-worthy braid. But wait! Do we know how to make a braid? Yes, we do! Because we’ve read the February issue of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide, where Xena Parsons of Xena’s Beauty Company in New York, NY, gives us step-by-step instructions for how to make the perfect plait. If you want to create your own fab braid, pick up a copy of the issue, and follow a few of Xena’s tips right here…

  • “If you just reverse the motion and instead of putting the hair over, you put it under, you get a fuller braid.”
  • “Put a little mousse or gel in the hair to give it some weight so the braid doesn’t slip out.”
  • “If your hair is fine you probably want to do a single braid. If the hair is thick, you can choose a style that has multiple braids.”
  • See you at the movies!

Sophisticate’s Blog:             Pro Advice For Backstage Styling

    Unknown

The Official CHI Backstage Styling Team came from all over the world for the Miss Universe 2013 Competition in Moscow, Russia, to create the styles seen on all 86 contestants, judges and on-air talent.  Some artists were on-site for over two weeks styling for the most beautiful girls in the world for photo shoots, events and competitions leading up to the big show. The backstage team started at 8 a.m. on show day, styling looks that needed to last from dress rehearsal throughout the night. Bruno Fernandes was one of the artists, and is offering up his best advice for hairstylists who are thinking of hitting a backstage of their own…

What are some main differences when backstage styling compared to in-salon styling?
“Your technique backstage is most important.  When you are backstage the final result isn’t the only thing that matters like in the salon.  When you are backstage, you are being watched to see how quickly you can style, how you create a buildable foundation that is flexible for multiple styles, how you work with others on the team and how you work with the contestants themselves.  Your performance is important to secure more backstage and editorial opportunities in the future.  You also must stay confident in yourself so the contestant you are styling has confidence in her hairstyle.”

How can you practice in your salon to become a better backstage stylist?
“Speed backstage is consequence of being able to multi-task in the salon.  If you work faster in the salon you spin more clients, more money and more happiness.  It is helpful to know how much time you have for each look, then divide your attention to ensure each service is provided with maximum efficiency.  When you are working on-set of a TV show, you know you have 90 seconds during a commercial spot to touch-up the hair of multiple on-air talent—so you divide your time and select your tools and product accordingly.  This is the same backstage, we have 90 seconds to touch up the top 5 contestants before they have to go back on stage, and sometimes you have more than one girl who is requesting you.  So if you are able to work with several clients at once, while giving each client the attention they deserve, then you are preparing yourself to be a backstage stylist.”

Do you have any backstage styling tips?
“My best tip would be to always have big clips and small clips.  It is the secret to all beautiful styling – when you have big sections and you put it in the clip to cool, it makes all the difference in the world.  When the hair is cooling it adapts to the shape and form it is in.  When we style these looks early in the morning, they need to last throughout the night so sometimes the girls are rehearsing with a full set of curls set in clips.”

“Don’t use much spray when setting the foundation because you need to leave the hair with options.  CHI Magnified Volume Finishing Spray adds volume, offers good fixation and flexibility to regenerate multiple styles.  Also, one part BioSilk Silk Therapy with 2 parts CHI Pliable Polish is the perfect concoction to tame flyaways while maintaining flexibility for restyling.”

“Know the products.  Normally in competitions backstage we are working with different textures of natural hair and different textures of extensions.  You need to understand how the products work or you won’t get good results.  When you take advanced education classes, you can ask how the product works on different textures that are popular in your area and also hear how it works on textures popular in other countries.  There is no room for mistakes backstage—you can’t accidently use the wrong product for a certain texture—you have to know how each product works on each texture of hair before you even get backstage.”

“Practice working with extensions before the show.  In my country extensions are very popular so I have a lot of experience.  You can’t imagine how many different hair types and textures extensions come in.  Typically extensions aren’t taken care of as well as one’s natural hair, so they can be very dry and damaged.  I have to use different tools and different products on extensions than on the girl’s natural hair.  I use a lot of Farouk Royal Treatment Pearl Complex on hair extensions for maximum hydration and shine.  This helps blend the textures of the extensions into the natural hair for a seamless look.”

Working with blow-dried hair, start by dividing mane into triangular sections around the head, with the point of each triangle originating at the crown; twist each triangle and clip. Working with one triangle at a time, release the hair and spray with CHI Infra Texture Dual Action Hairspray.

    Farouk
Working from front to back, curl and pin each section. Allow all curls to cool for five minutes before continuing.

    Farouk
Comb the loose section of hair at the nape over the top of the ponytail base for a final smooth surface; secure with bobby pins. Spray hair with CHI Helmet Head Hairspray for a long-lasting style.
