Sophisticate’s Blog:                 Oscar-Winning Hair

The Oscars are just days away and we can’t wait to be wowed by our favorite A-list stars! From Jennifer Lawrence’s and Amy Adams’ larger-than-life hair in American Hustle to The Wolf of Wall Street’s stunning Margot Robbie, the red carpet is sure to be filled with fashionable ladies and fabulous hairstyles! Here, Pravana hair pro Jamie Muniz shares some tips on how to recreate some of the fiercest manes in this year’s Oscar nominated movies…

Jennifer Lawrence: American Hustle
image002[2][1]Jennifer Lawrence looks stunning and sophisticated in this loose, ’70s style. To recreate, apply volumizing mousse to damp strands. With a large 1 and 1/?2 inch barrel iron, curl the top of the hair horizontal and back, pulling the fringe section down to curl up and back. This gives the hair added volume in front. Set with a very fine and even mist of hairspray. Brush out the set and smooth hair with a natural, soft bristle brush. Separate out the fringe and secure remaining hair loosely in a ponytail—a few inches away from the scalp. Holding a strand of hair from the center of the ponytail, push the elastic band towards the scalp, creating volume around pulled sides and back. Secure the elastic tightly. Separate the ponytail and fold hair loosely around the elastic base, wrapping longer ends and securing with a bobby pin. For the remaining fringe, lightly back-comb while holding the hair down in front of you. While holding the ends, roll back and fasten, separating the front and securing with a bobby pin. Finish with a spritz of shaping hairspray.

Amy Adams: American Hustle
image001[7]Amy Adams is a bombshell in this voluminous, classic roller set. The star’s big screen look begins with volumizing mousse and a light spray of NEVO’s Invisible Control for heat-protection, hold, and fullness. Next, blow-dry with a large round brush. Using a set of medium hot rollers, set the hair in a horizontal pattern on top and throughout the back of the head, and set the sides of the hair in a slightly diagonal pattern. Allow to cool completely. Take the rollers out and spray lightly. Brush through the set and reform the ends of the curled strands with your hands lightly coated with drops shine serum.

Margot Robbie: The Wolf of Wall Street
image003[4]Newcomer Margot Robbie is definitely one to watch! The show-stopper is super sultry and rocks the vixen blonde look effortlessly! To recreate her movie style, work a light spritz of Invisible Control onto dry hair for heat protection and light hold. Then apply shine serum through the mid-shaft and ends of the hair. Using a 1 and 1/?2 inch barrel iron, take vertical sections and holding the iron low, wrap the hair around the iron away from the face. Allow curls to cool, then shake out the set by taking fingertips and massaging the scalp from the temples up. This allows the partings and the curl nearest the base to loosen. Comb through curls lightly with fingertips and finish with a light hairspray.

Erin Andrews joins “Dancing with the Stars” as host alongside Emmy-Award Winner Tom Bergeron for its 18th season premiering Monday, March 17. No stranger to the ballroom, Andrews competed on the 10th season of “Dancing with the Stars” making it all the way to the finals. Known for being a pioneer in sports broadcasting, Andrews’s skills from the field are sure to be an asset in hosting a spirited dance competition. We loved Erin’s style change-ups when she performed and can hardly wait to see her new hair moves this season! And the beat goes on…. Photo by Craig Sjodin/ABC.

A new season of prime-time soap, Dallas, has started and we’re ready to see our favorite sexy cowboys back on television. Among the cast of leading ladies is beautiful brunette Jordana Brewster who plays Elena Ramos. Jordana keeps her mane looking lustrous with the help of fabulous oil products. Says the star, “I’m a fan of this hair stuff called Macadamia Natural Oil. It’s kind of amazing and so yummy. I straighten my hair a lot, so anything to protect it is good. Overstyling is the worst thing for hair. I only wash mine every couple of days. It’s better for it and I get the texture I like.” Now bring on some Texas heat!

Sebastian Professional lead stylist Anthony Cole brought 1960s glam to the runway Saturday, February 8, at Christian Siriano’s Fall 2014 show. Siriano’s Fall 2014 collection is inspired by late Swedish fashion model Lisa Fonssagrives whom the designer sees as the muse of Parisian beauty and glamour. The collection is “lady-like yet cool,” paying homage to the ‘60s, yet maintaining a modern twist. This sophisticated ‘60s-inspired chignon was in harmony with the vision behind the collection. On Her Star-Crossed Silhouette…

Minimalism and restraint? Forget about it! This year, it’s all about the bold, the grand and the extravagant, declare Joico International Creative Directors Damien Carney and Sue Pemberton. The Joico 2014 Trend Release (one of the images shown here) is aptly named In-Excess—hearalding the return to edgy glamour, sex appeal and extreme ‘anything goes’ luxury! “The goal wasn’t to create a retrospective of past trends, but instead be inspired by the more-is-better attitude of the time,” says Carney. The artistic visual shown here certainly reflects the delightfully unexpected spirit that showcases this season’s creative interpretations. Beautiful!

Sophisticate’s Blog:                 Getting The Perfect Haircolor

Walnut Ombre

All colors are not created equal! You might be envisioning a fab mane shade in your head but let’s face it—your stylist can’t read your mind. So how can you get the exact hair hue you want and leave the salon happy? Sophisticate’s sat down with color expert and Matrix Artistic Director Nick Stenson for our March/April 2014 issue to find out. Here’s a glimpse at what he said…

I know exactly what color I want my hair to be. What should I tell my colorist?

“Stylists are visual learners, so a photo is always a bonus! Do a little research. If you can show your stylist not just a photo of a celebrity, but a photo from a color company’s collection, he/she will have a clearer idea of what you’re trying to accomplish. Paging through Sophisticate‘s or doing a quick Google search is likely to turn up something you can easily print and bring with you.”

For even more tips from color pro Nick Stenson on how to get the mane shade you’re dreaming about, pick up a copy of SHG‘s March/April issue—the one with Kristen Bell on the cover! P.S. You’ll also see more gorgeous shades from Matrix, like the Walnut Ombre look above!

Taylor Swift
This past week in London, Taylor Swift hosted a “haircut party” gathering friends backstage to watch as she cut her hair into a new shoulder-length bob. Chicago-based, George the salon, is already seeing the Swift effect, receiving calls from women asking if the salon can host a haircut party for them. “Sometimes big changes are difficult for us and the support of your friends and family makes it easier to go through a drastic cut,” says George Gonzalez owner of George the salon. “Especially if you are nervous about a big length change, a haircut party is a great way to transition into your new style and have fun while doing it.”

Tips for Hosting a Haircut Party

  1. Give back: Connect your haircut party with a local charity and donate your hair.
  2. Location, location location: Create a night out at the salon or ask your stylist if they travel off site for special occasions.
  3. The more friends the better: Their support can be that extra push you need to go through with a big hair change.
  4. Snap it: Share photos of your favorite cuts for feedback and style suggestions as you gear up for the chop.
  5. Have fun with it: Bring some bubbly or wine to the salon for a new take on girl’s night.

Super model Christie Brinkley made news recently with an amazingly beautiful cover of a national magazine showcasing her at age 60—looking fit and gorgeous. “When I started modeling I had a full face. Some friends used to call me fat face,” Brinkley recently said. “Now it has its advantages as I grow old.” Well judging from the photos in our current issue on newsstands now, featuring her new collection of camera-ready hairpieces that she inspired for Hair2Wear, we know this dynamic woman will be around for years to come.
