Sophisticate’s Blog:                 Step-by-Step Glamour

Get ready for your closeup with a chic updo that’s perfect any special occasion! Are you ready to be the belle of the ball? Gkhair International Creative Director, Misha Belfer, gives Sophisticate’s all the styling details on how to recreate this gorgeous, old Hollywood glamour-inspired style…

1

Step One:
What’s great about this look is that it does not require any preparation and can be done on straight or curled hair!

2

Step Two:
Create an offset, Mohawlk-inspired section (staying above the occipital bone).

3

Step Three:
Secure the section (section one) with a hair band. Offset to one side, create a sleek, smooth surface using Gkhair Strong Hold Hairspray.

4

Step Four:
Section off and secure 1/4 of the ponytail, then backcomb tresses to create volume and texture in the rest of the ponytail.

5

Step Five:
Release the secure section and create a smooth surface on top of the textured part of the ponytail.

6

Step Six:
Flip all of the hair in the ponytail forward and secure with a hair band that’s folded in half and secured on either side with bobby pins.

7

Step Seven:
Flip section one tresses back in their original position and secure and tuck the ends using hair pins while forming the shape.

8

Step Eight:
Using the Gkhair 4 in 1 Curling Iron, curl hair in the bang area (section two) in small sections—all in the same direction.

9

Step Nine:
Comb to your artistic desire, retaining the gorgeous finger waves.

For brightly colored strands or pastel tips, use soft chalk pastels from an art store. Twist each strand as you apply the chalk.

THE FAUX BOB

Celebrity Hairstylist Frank Barbosa, who has worked on movies with stars like Anne Hathaway, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Garner, and Sarah Jessica Parker, shares his tips for creating the latest hair trend, tucking to get a faux bob.

To achieve, hair must have some length (at least hitting your shoulders). To begin, have your part, texture choice or fringe already in place. Use a great working hair spray like IT&LY Pure Definition. For straight hair; opt for a paddle brush to mold a smoother, sleeker tuck. For waves, use your fingers to arrange curls in place so you don’t disturb the texture. Loosely gather the bottom portion of your hair and tuck under into a roll; secure with bobby pins.

Once tucked, work the style with your fingers to fan out the sides. Apply a headband or for added volume and tendrils, use the tail end of your comb to lift or pull out shorter pieces.

We’re loving Kate Beckinsale’s version…

Only blow-dry small sections of your hair at one time. Blow-drying hair sections more than one inch thick doesn’t allow heat to pass through.

We’ve got your behind-the-scenes look right here…

RRR1Simply Divine

“This was my favorite look! I love it because I would love to be able to style my own hair like that every single night when I go out,” Cheryl says about this sassy silhouette. To get the look, George added extensions for fullness and created softer curls, which he then teased for a rocker-girl look.

Going Natural

Cheryl showed off her natural beauty with this subtle, chic coif. “I love [the softer style] because it’s rare that I don’t get to wear a lot of makeup, especially on Dancing With The Stars where I’m always wearing makeup and my hair is fully done,” says the dance pro. “It’s nice to have a natural look…and you get to see my freckles!”

BIG BEAUTY WEEKEND!

benson_color2
Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide will be working hard, at America’s Beauty Show,   this weekend and covering all that is hair! America’s Beauty Show has been held in Chicago for 90 years and is one of the oldest of it’s kind in our industry.  The well-attended extravaganza  is owned and produced by salon professionals and the members of Cosmetologists Chicago. We will be showcasing imagery from in and around the show in the upcoming week online and in a fabulous feature in an upcoming issue….your red-carpet pass! The amazing MATRIX Artistic Director,  Chrystofer Benson,  designed the beautiful look shown here that was showcased at last year’s show…can hardly wait to see what’s new!

Know your hair type: Hair is fine if a single strand is hard to see. Your mane is thick if it feels coarser.

Sophisticate’s Blog:                 Divergent Kate

UnknownCelebrity hairstylist Renato Campora gave Kate Winslet sexy yet sophisticated waves for the Los Angeles premiere of Divergent. Inspired by her bright poppy dress, Campora gave Winslet beachy waves that were fun yet still glamourous enough for the red carpet.

Here is his step-by-step breakdown:

  • To begin styling, Campora applied a volumizing mousse to clean, wet hair.
  • Next, he applied  John Frieda Luxurious Volume Root Booster Blow Dry Lotion, concentrating on the roots to ensure volume, and blew out her hair.
  • When Winslet’s hair was completely dry, Renato used a 1.5 inch curling iron to create voluminous waves that had a beachy, yet defined style.
  • After letting her waves cool, he finished the look with John Frieda Luxurious Volume All Day Hold Hairspray to ensure her gorgeous waves maintained volume.

MAKEOVER TIME!

We had to share this fun video from haircolor fabulista Brig Osten at p!ayhairlounge in sunny Simi Valley, California. Olivia was tired of her lavender mane and wanted to go red like the music group’s Paramore Hayley Williams. Allison Clevenger performed the fiery makeover magic (cut and color!). The cut? Inspired by 2014’s most in-demand look at salons everywhere…you guessed it, Jennifer Lawrence!

KIMBERLY CALDWELL: ACCESSORIZE!

photo1[2]

Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide’s Star Beauty Blogger Kimberly Caldwell has a new blog! Check it out here…

Soooo, what to do when you are having a bad hair day or when you just don’t have to time to wash, blow, and style your locks? Cover it up!

We have so many options these days and a messy bun is “in,” but that gets so old. From beanies to fedoras and headbands, your picks are limitless. Make people think you are making a fashion statement, not hiding your messy mane by rocking it with confidence. One of my fave go-to toppers is my knit mustard colored beanie I found at the L.A. flea market.  It adds a pop of color to my ensemble of the day and it’s easy to throw on and run out the door.

photo2[2]

I am always on the run and I love a good accessory, so I am teaming up with my friends at Head N’ Home hats to launch my own handmade leather hair accessory line just for us!  I sport their exclusive leather hats all the time to jazz up my outfit. The great thing about topping off your look with a hat is there is minimal time dedicated to your exposed hair. Tie up the back in a low bun or pony and blow dry/flat-iron your bang and add a little wax for texture. If you are one of the lucky ones who don’t need hair on your face, then slick it all back in a bun and just let an inch or two of your root pop out the front so you don’t look bald. Sometimes I even wear an elastic headband underneath to keep my hair in place.

With my new hair accessory line, Stage Presents, you can either rock my versatile headbands over your bangs or with all of your hair back in a pony. We are putting the last touches on my black-on-black studded headband (it’s thick enough to mask your defiant do) and my stained-glass leather knot reversible headband that I am so proud of (I love the idea of a two-in-one purchase! Double duty!). We are in the final stages of perfecting these unique leather designs and making sure  anyone and everyone can rock these accessories comfortably and confidently.

Here’s some pics of me strutting my stuff with the best bad-hair-day trick in the book….I mean, in the magazine. Pick up the latest issue of Sophisticates Hairstyle Guide on stands now to read my column, “Hairdo’s and Don’ts”, plus follow me on Instagram and Twitter @_kimcaldwell to catch up with me and my latest bob. Until next time, head up ladies!

Try not to wash your hair everyday. Doing so can strip your hair of its natural oils, which are needed for healthy, shiny hair.

GENERATION NXT!

Generation NXT Charity Benefit
Last month, John Paul Mitchell Systems supported the Generation NXT fundraising event, DREAM: One Night/One Mission/One Mission in NYC. Generation NXT, a non-profit organization comprised of young humanitarians in NYC, selects a new charity to support each year through their philanhtropic social events; this year’s benefactor, Dream Foundation, is the first and largest national wish-granting organization for adults and families battling life-threatening illnesses. Guest of honor, Kim Kardashian, was in attendance with sisters Kourtney and Khloe to bring more awareness to the cause. The event raised a total of $80,000! Doing good in the name of beauty!!! Props to JPMS…
