SOPHISTICATE’S BLOG: Feed Your Face–Chocolate!

BE0208

Every now and then your skin needs a bit of TLC. People often turn to pricey face masks, yet neglect the fresh ingredients in their own home. The creator of Elizabeth’s Secret Beauty Bar is revealing how to get toned and hydrated skin with her signature chocolate mask. Yes, you read right! Chocolate is filled with antioxidants, which combat free radicals that lead to cell aging. Here’s the recipe, try it for yourself!
Ingredients

– 2 tablespoons of organic raw cocoa powder

– 2/3 cup of water

– 2 tablespoons of organic honey

– 5 drops of coconut oil

Directions
1. Add coconut oil to a bowl with honey and microwave for about 5-6 seconds.
2. Mix in the cocoa powder and water with the other ingredients and stir until the mixture becomes creamy.
3. Apply to your skin using a facial brush and leave it on until it hardens.
4. Remove the mask with a cool wash cloth in an upward motion.

This mask also works on your hands and feet, so go crazy indulging in chocolate—for skincare, of course!

Alternative Hair Show 2014

ROYAL ALBERT HALL — This past autumn the global event of the year, the Alternative Hair Show, continued its legacy by presenting an outstanding evening of inspirational creativity and fundraising in support of Fighting Leukemia. Spectacular presentations by 19 individual international hairdressing teams helped to raise over 181,000 pounds for the Alternative Hair Charitable Foundation. This brings the total raised to over 9 million pounds! Bringing to life the awesome outcome of the Fighting Leukemia cause were special guests Francesca Waite and her four-year-old son, Blue Tobin (now a leukemia survivor), who enjoyed the organization’s annual excursion to Disneyland Paris! Can you hear us cheering here at Sophisticate’s? Take a look at the evening right here…

Battle of the Strands 2014

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — The extreme hair, makeup and wardrobe competition appropriately dubbed the Battle of the Strands was one of the most over-the-top showdowns among some of the biggest names in the salon industry. The spectacular display of creative genius in hair, makeup, nails and wardrobe culminated this past autumn with a phenomenal display of beauty concepts as shown right here. Called the “Project Runway” of the beauty industry, the battles on stage featured different styling challenges. GKHair was an exclusive sponsor of the competition and the brand featured Dry Shampoo–a styling favorite at the event. Wow!!!!

SOPHISTICATE’S BLOG: BUN FUN!

FB1

Summer is here and Pravana and Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide are showing you how to achieve another hot look for the season — a low bun with a fishtail accent. Here’s the step-by-step…

FB2

FB31. Mist clean, damp hair with Nevo Invisible Control to add structure, build memory and protect against thermal styling in preparation for heated tools.
2. Blow-dry the hair starting from the nape and working up, smoothing and creating fullness and shape with a medium round brush.

FB43. As you dry, clip each section into a barrel curl. While you work on blow-drying the rest of the hair, the barrel curls will cool and set into shape. The Nevo Invisible Control previously applied to the hair will help the hair retain the memory of the set, creating gorgeous curls.
4. Continue working up the hair in this fashion, round brushing and fastening hair into horizontal barrel curls.

FB55. Release the set and brush through carefully. Determine a side or natural parting.  Section out the fringe and gather a horizontal section of hair below the parting.
6. Divide the section into two pieces.

FB67. Begin your fishtail braid by pulling a ½” piece from the outside of the right section and cross it over into the left section. Repeat with a ½” piece from the left section, crossing it over to the right. Repeat this process through to the ends of the hair.
8. Sprinkle Nevo Lived-In on hair lightly and blend it into the root with fingers. This will add texture and work as a primer on the hair prior to styling.

FB79. Now that the fishtail is complete, begin back-combing horizontal sections in the fringe and working back across the top of the head, into the crown for volume throughout the rest of the hair.
10. Pull the back-combed sections back and twist the sides into the nape, pulling all of the hair back into a ponytail, leaving the fishtail out.  Secure the hair using an elastic band and two bobby pins.  Secure one pin vertically into the top base of the pony.  Wrap the elastic band around the ponytail until tight.  Secure the remaining bobby by crossing it through the first.

FB811. Pull the ponytail through a hair donut, setting the donut firmly against the base of the pony.
12. Secure the donut into place with a hair pin.

FB913. Separate the ponytail into smaller sections, and lightly back comb those sections using a teasing brush.
14. Wrap the sections around the donut, while lightly smoothing them. Secure bun into place with bobby pins beneath the base of the donut.

FB1015. Pull the fishtail braid back and wrap around the bun, securing into place; spraying and finishing the look.

SOPHISTICATE’S BLOG: 10 TIPS FOR A (safe!) PRO MANICURE

NailSalon_zpsc2302b4e

Manicures, pedicures and artistic nail treatments are super popular, and if you’re ready to join in on the fun with a pro nail treatment, you’ll need to know a few things.  Robert Urfer, founder of Lucas-Cide Salon and Spa Disinfectant, has compiled 10 tips to ensure that you not only get gorgeous tips, you won’t encounter anything yucky while you’re getting them at the nail salon… Safety first!

1. Arrive early.
This allows you to take a few moments to glance around the salon to ensure the overall condition is neat and tidy.

2. Look for the license.
Be sure the salon is fully licensed to conduct business.

3. Check out their sterilization methods.
Make sure the salon is disinfecting their tools between customers.

4. Scan the pedicure area.
The nail technicians should be cleaning and disinfecting each chair and water basin after each use.

5. Make sure they’re washing their hands.
Just as the tools should be disinfected, so should the nail technicians’ hands.

6. Review your nail pro’s station before she starts.
Make sure the nail artist thoroughly cleans the station before starting your treatment.

7. Opt out of cuticle cutting.
While cuticle cutting may seem like the norm, it can allow bacteria to enter your body and cause infections.

8. Ask for your own tools.
If you’re a regular, the salon may store tools specifically used only on you.

9. Try a med spa.
Overseen by a physician, these spas are thoroughly cleaned and sterilized.

10. Report concerns.
Contact your State Board of Cosmetology to report any issues you think need to be fixed.

That’s what I wanted to achieve with these haircolors!” The professional haircolor formulas were created with Vero K-Pak Color Intensity by Joico. THE FACE OF EVIL

MTE5NTU2MzIxMjk5NzYwNjUx-1[2]

th

We can hardly wait until Maleficent opens at our local theaters here in Chicago! But being fans of Angelina Jolie and the Disney villain, we had to find more about how the star was going to pull off the role, since the original film was animated. And did we get the full beauty scoop!

Special effects makeup artist Arien Tuiten worked with Jolie’s personal makeup artist Toni G to get the look down. The actress was in full makeup for 70 days, often for 16 hours at a time. Toni G used Kiehl’s Blue Astringent to prep her face before applying the prosthetics.

“We tried many, many lipsticks,” Toni G said…but finally settled on MAC’s Pro Longwear Lipglass in Anthurium, which is now part of MAC’s Maleficent Collection. The eye makeup was an inspiration from a labradorite stone…which also inspired the color of her creeped-out contacts. Maleficent’s nails are long and sinister. Jolie suggested painting the underside of her nails (tops were bone) a Louboutin kind of red.

Now we’re really psyched!

REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE

MEN_Matthew_Morris_Image_1

Matthew Morris of  Matthew Morris Salon and Skin Care in Denver, Colorado, has been announced as a Finalist for Men’s Hairstylist of the Year at the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) 2014’s North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA). We love this high-crown volume look that reminds us of actor James Dean. Retro never looked so good! Rolled up t-shirt sleeves anyone?

SOPHISTICATE’S BLOG: Rumer Has It…

Screen shot 2014-05-16 at 5.28.37 PM

Rumer Willis always keeps us guessing with her coif switch-ups and her new pink-orange hue definitely made us do a double take! It’s not only totally stunning, it’s perfect for summer, too! Here, Danny Moon—Pravana Guest Artist and Celebrity Colorist at the Andy Lecompte Salon—shares how to recreate this fierce mane shade and how to keep the color fresh…

COLOR CUES:

  • Celeb colorist Danny Moon used Pravana Vivids Orange as the base of Rumer’s color and Pravana Vivids Magenta through the ends to create her gorgeous ombre orange-pink shade.
MANE MAINTENANCE:
  • To keep color like Rumer’s looking healthy, apply Nevo Hydra Pearls after coloring to lock in moisture and repair strands.
  • At home, wash with Pravana ChromaSilk Vivids Shampoo and Conditioner and apply a deep conditioning treatment a few times a week to keep strands from getting dry and frizzy. The look requires frequent touch-ups, so it’s all about hair health and maintenance!

“Color choice is not about trends—it’s about finding the right tone at the right time and wearing it right now,” says celebrity colorist Danny Moon. “The color combination of Pravana Vivids Magenta and Vivids Orange creates a perfect creamy sherbet [hue], that’s an ideal combination of both pastel and bright for this transitional season. Summer is about glow, and a sherbet [shade] complements Rumer’s skin tone.”

Straight & Sleek

SS1

Pravana and Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide are showing you how to achieve an always hot look — a straight, sleek and sassy style. Here’s the step-by-step…

SS2

SS31. On damp hair, apply NEVO Full Volume focusing at the root and working through the lengths of the hair. The Cottonseed Protein in NEVO Full Volume weightlessly creates shape and airy movement, perfect for any down style. Apply NEVO Hydra Pearls through the mid-length and ends.

SS4

SS64. Melt NEVO Lived-In Powder Potion in hands and smooth any flyaways left for glass-like hair.

ECO COUTURE: Where Hair Fashion Meets Sustainability

IMG_7234-Edit

NEUMA Beauty’s Eco Couture Collection embodies the idea that style meets sustainability; compromising either is not an option. Inspired by distinct voices making a collective difference, Eco Couture bonds individualistic hair trends with a green lifestyle for edgy meets eco-chic styling.

Bold and fearless texture combine with subtle undercuts and soft disconnection making the collection fashionable, yet achievable. Serving as the foundation of the Signature Looks is the partless hair trend, an easy to maintain and classic look that embraces your natural texture.

“We were inspired by English fashion designer Katharine Hammnet, who uses her designs to save the planet and speak out against dangerous pesticides, killing of whales, and the spread of HIV,” says Chad Law, Education Director at NEUMA. “Eco Couture looks at spreading the NEUMA message of eco-beauty with a purpose in a bigger, bolder-than-ever way.”
