SPREAD THE BLUR!

spread the blur

Everyone wants to look and feel their best during the holiday season, radiant hair included. Unfortunately, with our social calendars filled to the brim from Thanksgiving into the New Year, it can be challenging to find the time to care for and maintain your haircolor. To help guide your haircare regimen this season, Redken Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham says to show, don’t tell!

“If you plan to try out a new look for the holidays, whether bold or subtle, bringing photographs and examples of haircolor you love will help you and your colorist explore your color options and ensure that you both mean the same thing when you say “honey blonde” or “scarlet red.” One technique I’ve been using a lot recently is a Metallic Blur haircolor – a combination of luxe bronze and gold tones that are softened together using Redken’s new Blur Technique. The end result is a natural shimmering finish that is perfect for those holiday pictures and parties!” We love!

BEAUTIFUL BRIDAL STYLE!

beautiful bridal

Tricoci University of Beauty Culture (TUBC) is honored to announce that two of its talented cosmetology students picked up awards at the 29th annual Illinois Association of Cosmetology Schools’ Student Contest (IASC), held on November 9th at Tinley Park Convention Center.

The following students represented TUBC with beautiful, creative work: Laura Saunders (TUBC’s Glendale Heights campus), Rebekah Hall and Kathryn (Kaedi) Leamon (both from TUBC’s Chicago NE campus). Kathryn was awarded first place and Laura won fifth place in the bridal category.

The bridal category asked student competitors to create a very elegant bridal look that reflected a fashionable ‘classic bridal wedding.’ Hair could be short or long, and styled as an updo or down. The degree of difficulty in achieving the final hairstyle and makeup was considered as part of the judging.

Jill Marcodes, Executive Director of Cosmetology at Tricoci University of Beauty Culture, says: “This competition is always important to our students–it’s a chance for cosmetology students across Illinois to gather and demonstrate their newly developed beauty skills. This year’s team had an awesome time and a special congratulations to the two award winners.”

HOT TOOLS, COLD WEATHER

hot tools

Evo’s International Creative Director, Lauren McCowan, offers advice and tips on how to manage and use hot tools during the upcoming winter months…

The most important thing when using hot tools on the hair is making sure you have a good base to start on. Using a good shampoo and conditioner to build moisture and strength in your hair is the most important step. You need to fill in the gaps in the hair’s health and then use your hot tools to seal that in. It will make your style last longer and give better shine and quality hair. Ritual Salvation Shampoo and Conditioner from Evo have a repair and hydration factor as well as a UV/UVB factor without being heavy or greasy.

→ Once the hair is prepped, a good leave-in conditioner will create an even porosity and also an extra layer of moisture to counteract against the heat. A heat protector is also a must—try Evo’s Icon Welder.

One of the major mistakes that women make when using hot tools is to spray the section with hairspray before putting a hot tool on it. Hairspray contains alcohol in its formulation and when you apply heat over a layer of hairspray it dries the hair out even more and can create static as well as causing curls to drop.

→ When the hair is dried out, it will attract what it needs on a base moisture level from the atmosphere around it—hence the reason hair that has had too much heat applied to it “drops out.” By building a good foundation with product and using your tools on moderate to medium temperature, you will essentially “seal” the moisture in the hair and your hair will look better and last longer.

Hollywood loaned out one of its hottest stylists last month, when Matrix Celebrity Stylist George Papanikolas took an evening off from coloring clients like Kim and Khloe Kardashian and Miranda Kerr and took the stage for an evening of haircolor education for over 300 hairstylists.

celebrity to reality 2In his class, called “Celebrity to Reality,” he prepared four stunning models, and demonstrated two of his most effective coloring techniques he uses with his celebrity clientele—the 2-Step Balayage and the Backcomb Balayage. For each demo, he worked with Matrix professional color. Matrix offers ColorInsider non-ammonia color, SoColor permanent color, Color Sync opaque demi-permanent color and Gloss Sync sheer demi-permanent gloss. Those are the four things every colorist needs,” explains Papanikolas. “You have to really look at the hair as you’re working, consider what you’re doing. We can’t ever forget that we’re artists!”

Cool-Girl Texture Knot

coolgirl1

Looking for the perfect “I barely tried but it looks perfect” hair style? This texture knot, created by Aveda Guest Artist Jon Reyman for designer Simon Miller’s runway show for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, may be the perfect find. “I created an easily achievable and interesting look with natural texture,” Reyman noted, adding that style is natural and wearable. He created the knot to appear tussled and messy, but still with a bit of architecture and design to appear as a cool girl style. Your turn!

How to Get the Look

coolgirl2Step 1: Apply a coin-sized amount of Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight and blow-dry.
coolgirl3

Step 2: Add a layer of Pure Abundance Style Prep and continue to blow-dry. This will give hair added texture.
coolgirl4

Step 3: After hair is dry, create soft movement by first applying Air Control Hair Spray and then using a flat iron to wave the hair.
coolgirl5

Step 4: Create a messy center part. Taking a right front section of hair, pull behind ear, but still keeping the section separated, from the back of the hair. Do the same with the left side front section.

Step 5: Pulling from the back of the hair, take a 1 to 2 inch section of hair, based off the thickness of hair. Braid this section about 2 inches long, and secure with an elastic band.

Step 6: Collect remaining hair and pull back, secure with elastic band below the hairline.

Step 7: Tie front section in a knot over the braid. Pin the knot secure then manipulate it to give a more natural look.

Step 8: Finish with Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil for a slight shine, and set with Air Control Hair Spray.
