What Is Your Best Hair Color?

best haircolor

The experts at All-Nutrient, makers of Keratint and All-Nutrient Professional Cream Haircolor lines, are giving up their best advice for how you can pick your next new hair hue! (P.S. They’re the ones who created the gorgeous haircolor you see above…)

It all comes down to skin tone and eye color! Start with this basic rule: If your skin has a pink or blue-based undertones, stick with ash or cool shades; if your skin has a yellow undertones, stay with warm shades. Aren’t sure? Hold a shirt or scarf that is orange up to your face, then try a blue one. Also check out yellow or green if you think you have olive-toned skin. Which one clashes with your skin and which is closer to your natural skin tone?

Now, find your skin’s undertones below, then look for your eye color. You might find more hair color options than you every imagined!

If your underlying skin tone is close to neutral or creamy:

  • Dark eyes and creamy skin tones work best with dark-to=medium brunette or medium red. You can also cover gray with auburn shades that are medium to dark.
  • If your eyes are hazel, blue or green, anything from a light brunette to medium blonde will look good on you. You’ll also look great in auburn or strawberry blonde if your natural haircolor is on the light side. In fact, you can pull off almost any shade of red!
  • For blue or green eyes and naturally blonde hair, you can choose lighter-to-medium shades of blonde. If you really want platinum, be sure it won’t wash out very light skin tones too much. (A few lowlights or subtly darker roots help avoid this.)

If your underlying skin tone is warm or ruddy:

  • Dark brown, black or hazel eyes allow you to have black, medium brown or golden brown haircolor. Even wine or auburn will enrich your natural skin tones.
  • If your eyes are hazel, blue or green and your natural haircolor is light brown to medium blonde, you can add light or golden highlights, or choose medium brunettes that are on the warm side.
  • If your eyes are blue or green and your hair is naturally blonde, stay with golden blondes and very light brunette shades. Vivid red tones and warm reds will also work well for you, especially if your hair is naturally on the warm or golden side. Avoid pale, cool blondes.

If your underlying skin tone is olive:

  • For brown eyes, opt for dark brown or rich brunette shades. To cover gray, get a slightly lighter brunette and add highlights.
  • If your eye color is hazel, blue or green, try light-to-medium brunette or ask your colorist about a sandy shade for covering gray.
  • If your eye color is blue or green, chances are good your hair color is already light. If this is the case, you can try light brunette or even blonde, just as long as it’s not pure platinum or super-light. To cover gray, you can go lighter than natural, so gray hair looks like highlights, or you can deepen your gray and add highlights.

If your underlying skin tone is on the yellow side.

  • Dark or hazel eyes look great with shades from black to medium brown. Auburn, wine or aborigine also accentuate your natural coloring.
  • If your eyes are hazel, blue or green, light browns and medium blondes will also look good on you. Keep blondes on the ashy or sandy side; don’t ask for too much gold.
  • If your eyes are blue or green and your hair is naturally blonde, add neutral or sandy blonde shades, or opt for light brunettes without a lot of warmth. If your hair is naturally on the red or warm side, keep red shades subdued; don’t try anything too vibrant.

Naturally, there are always exceptions to rules, or exceptional women who simply want the stark contrast of pale, cool skin, blue eyes and black hair. And then, there are fashionistas, who make pastels, green, blue, fuchsia and pink part of their color play. But even if you’re one, sticking to the basic rules of warms and cools makes sense. When you add an opposite-skin-tone color to the mix, have pieces of it placed away from your face, not right next to it, and you can have a more contrasting color and look good, too.

All set? Now head to your salon and ask your color pro about All-Nutrient professional haircolor and get ready to make a splash with that new hair hue!

Camila Alves’ Wavy Hair Style

Kristin Heitkotter styled Camila Alves for the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards this past weekend. The star wore her hair down with one side pushed back behind her ear and a loose wave throughout. Here’s how Heitkotter achieved the look…

1.     Before blow-drying Camila’s hair, Heitkotter sprayed Keratherapy Leave-In Conditioner throughout. Since Camila has “very curly” hair and it tends to be difficult to blow-dry, this product made her hair smooth and shiny. The stylist then applied a smoothing cream and blow-dried the hair using a large 3″ round brush.

3.     After hair was completely dry, Heitkotter curled sections of Camila’s hair with a 1 ½” curling-iron, then pinned each section, allowing them to cool for 10 minutes. She then used one pump of Keratherapy Argan Oil to finger through Camila’s ends for shine. A mist of hairspray was applied to tuck one side behind Camila’s hair, and for hold throughout. “This hairspray had such a fantastic hold to it!” Heitkotter shares.

Claire Danes’ ’40s Hair Style

Celebrity hairstylist Peter Butler styled Homeland star Claire Danes for the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards this past weekend, opting for an elegant look with a nod to the 1940s. Here’s how Butler created Claire’s look:

1. Starting with her natural low side-part, Butler primed Claire’s damp hair using Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Boost & Lift Foaming Air Mousse, applying throughout the hair for lift and hold.

2. Using a round brush, he blow-dried the hair in 3-inch sections. For additional volume, he sprayed a bit of Vidal Sassoon ColorFinity Dry Shampoo at the roots and backcomb the hair.

3. Using a 3-inch barrel curling iron, he wrapped 3-inch sections of hair around the curling iron for a polished look. To create the soft finish, he combed through curls rights away.

4. For face-framing detail, Butler used a 1 ½ -inch curling iron to twirl small sections of the hair around the front away from the face.

5. Butler brushed through the curls to form a soft wave, using a Mason Pearson brush. He then ran a quick burst of air from a blow-dryer through the curls to further bend them into gentle curves. A light, flexible hairspray finished the look.

Reese’s Perfect Pony

reese low ponytail

Spotted! A new hair trend on the red carpet at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards this past weekend: the low ponytail. A few celebs were scene rocking this chic and easy style, including Reese Witherspoon. Here, celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel shares the step-by-step for how he created the glam low pony, and how you can, too…

    • Create a severe side part on towel-dried hair and and apply a frizz-fighter (Abergel used John Frieda Frizz Ease Beyond Smooth Frizz-Immunity Primer), followed by a volumizing mousse.
    • Blow-dry hair with a round brush, then use a 1 ¼” curling iron to curl hair into bouncy, soft curls.
    • With the help of John Frieda Frizz Ease Clearly Defined Holding Gel, pull hair back into a sleek, low side ponytail, securing with an elastic band. To hide the band, wrap a lock of hair from the ponytail around it and secure with a few hairpins.
    • To finish the look, use a paddle brush to smooth out the ponytail and spritz with flexible hold hairspray.

KIMBERLY IS MARRIED! A NEW POST FROM SOPHISTICATE’S STAR BEAUTY BLOGGER

kimberly is married

Coming soon in Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide, you can get the whole scoop on my New Year’s Eve Great Gatsby inspired wedding hair for my big day!

But first, let’s cover my Farrah Fawcett rehearsal dinner do! If you have been a bride, then you understand the chaos in the few days leading up to it all. I was my own wedding planner because, I’ll be honest, I like things the way I like things. Also, because I am just a creative person and what better way than your own wedding to really dive in and expand your mind!

kimberly is married 2I couldn’t have pulled off this look without my fave tool, my Andis flat iron! I was swamped with tying up all the loose ends and helping set up, so I didn’t have time to give my hair a good cleanse. Lucky for me, Klorane donated travel-size dry shampoos to put in all of the guest gift bags so I gave it a try. Wow!!! What a relief! The grease was gone and my hair was fuller than ever. I sprayed the mist on my roots and after a bit of teasing, I flipped my hair and spritzed for volume. I split my hair right down the middle with my comb and bumped up the crown of my head for drama. I took my Andis flat iron and flipped my ends up and away from my face. I popped on a fringe sequin blush short dress, some nude strappy heels, and a smokey eye with a pale lip and I was set.

My soon-to-be-hubby needed a quick freshen up after helping me slave away all day so he leaned on his Andis beard trimmer for that perfectly rugged Marlboro man edge. What a hunk. When we walked out to greet my loved ones to kick off our wedding weekend extravaganza, everyone was in awe of that ten minute mane I just polished up! Then the fun began! We danced all night and I definitely added a few hair flips in there because why the heck not!?! Thank you Klorane and Andis for helping me primp for my big weekend! What a blast!

Cool-Girl Hair

Emily Blunt, winner of the Critic’s Choice Award for Best Actress in an Action Film (“Edge of Tomorrow”), dazzled in gorgeous hair created by celebrity stylist Ashley Streicher for Rich Hair Care. “It’s sexy, ‘cool girl’ hair,” shares Streicher. “Tousled, textured, waved and volumized.”

Since Emily’s gown was on the formal side, “we wanted to ‘cool’ up the hair a bit and do a bronzed smokey eye and nude lip. Emily loved the idea,” explains Streicher. “Emily had just come home after getting fresh blonde balayaged highlights with Tracey Cunningham, arriving with wet, freshly washed hair.  It was actually great for the texture that I wanted to create for her.”

Here, Streicher shares the step-by-step…

  • I combed Rich Pure Luxury Argan Volumising Mousse through Emily’s wet hair from roots to ends, then blow-dried with a round brush for natural volume. Then I center-parted her hair and added volume at the crown.
  • Next, I took about 1 1/2 square inch sections (starting at the nape of the neck) and sprayed each with Rich Pure Luxury Sure Hold Hairspray before wrapping  around a 1 inch hot rod, leaving just the very ends out.
  • When releasing the hair from the barrel, I pulled it straight down to cool while slightly roughing it up with my fingers. I did this all the way up the head until the very top front, where I made an “S” wave with my flat iron.
  • I then warmed a small amount of Rich Pure Luxury Rejuvenating Argan Oil Elixir in my palms and pulled  it through all of the ends while shaking some of her wave out.  This separated the texture while keeping the ends healthy-looking and shiny.
  • I then gently back combed the crown and gave Emily a nice little head rub to create some texture and break up the curl.
  • To complete, I quickly ran a flat iron over random curls, to make it a little less perfect, while keeping the volume.

72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

Inspired by the Wild star’s glistening sequin dress, celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel gave Reese Witherspoon subtle, chic waves with a clean side part for the 72nd Annual Golden Globes. “Simplicity, modernity, and effortless texture were my key elements to creating this style,” said Adir. Here’s the step-by-step breakdown:

1. Create a severe side part on towel-dried hair, then spritz with John Frieda Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blow-Out Spray from roots to mid-shaft. Use John Frieda Root Booster Blow Dry Lotion on just the roots.

2. Rough-dry hair until nearly dry, bringing out the natural texture and increasing volume. Then, using a medium-sized boar bristle brush, blow-dry the top front section to create a beautiful sweep of hair.

3. After blow-drying the rest of hair smooth, use a 1 ¼” curling iron to wave hair from mid-shaft to ends, leaving the ends more undone.

4. To finish, pull hair over to one side and secure with a few bobby pins, making sure the opposite side of cascading hair is pulled tight. Mist with flexible hairspray for hold.
