We love this look by Bree Harbour at Caramel—A Michael Levin Salon. Beautifully rich red hues start at bit deeper at crown. Off-center part and slight tease at top make this style one that is perfect for anytime, anyplace.

If you have limited time, choose a wet/dry flat iron, which allows you to straighten hair while it’s damp. This way, you save some time by not having to blow-dry first.

BACKSTREET BOYS & SOPHISTICATE’S HAIRSTYLE GUIDE

backstreet boys

The Backstreet Boys were in town this past weekend for the annual America’s Beauty Show (the amazing trade show that spotlights all that is beauty)! The BSB are investors in the Chicago-based mascara company that brought them to town to help launch Lash Now lash-extensions (under the Nicole Milan brand).  How did the relationship come about? Co-founder of Lash Now, David Strauss, and his business partner Eric Glasson sent samples of the mascara to the band. The Boys shared the product with their wives and they loved it. The rest? Beauty history!

Shown in this image with a few of the BSB are (left to right) Sophisticate’s Assistant Editors Cicely Haire and Ashley White, Editor-in-Chief Bonnie L. Krueger and Assistant Editor Leslie Bryan. Hard work 🙂

If your natural color is blonde, go for lowlights that are one or two levels darker than your natural color to bring out dimension and increase shininess.

Parlux Fragrances LLC - Paris Hilton Limited Anniversary Edition

Can you believe Paris Hilton has been making fragrances for 10 years? To celebrate, the star has released Paris Hilton Limited Anniversary Edition for Women, a special fragrance that embodies Paris’s original essence with an intensified, more concentrated version of her signature scent, Paris Hilton for Women, which continues to be a favorite and best-seller around the world.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate 10 years,” Paris says. “I keep getting requests all over the world for more fragrances and so I’m happy to keep creating them. Paris Hilton for Women was an obvious choice for the Limited Anniversary Edition as it was my first fragrance when I was 23 and will always be very special to me.”

When getting ready to make a haircolor switch, start with a strand test. Color just one strand of hair—in an inconspicuous place—to help determine if you like the new color.

The Power Of Hair

L'Oreal Paris Karlie KlossToday marks the launch of the new L’Oreal Paris Advanced Haircare #POWERON campaign. “#POWERON revolves around the profound insight that when a woman experiences her most beautiful hair, she can harness a very special kind of power that’s truly extraordinary,” says L’Oreal Paris Senior Vice President of Marketing, Malena Higuera.

To kick-off the campaign, L’Oreal Paris spokesmodels and celebrity brand hair experts will take to social media to share their own powerful hair moments. All women can take part in the conversation by uploading photos, quotes or images to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and if you tag @LOrealParisUSA, #POWERON and #POWERONCONTEST, you will be entered to win a trip to New York City to spend “Power Time” with Karlie Kloss.

“There’s no doubt that my hair plays a specific role in my life, and I feel an unrivalled type of inner confidence when I’m having great hair day” says Karlie. “I’m proud to partner with L’Oreal Paris Advanced Haircare on the #POWERON campaign, as we encourage women everywhere to share what that distinct feeling of having ‘powered on’ hair feels like to them–and in turn, inspire one another.”

If you roll pieces of hair in opposite directions, alternating the way you roll it, it gives the hair loose curls, which will bounce off each other.

Hair Employed

Kim Kardashian may look fierce with her new platinum tresses, but all that blonde on top of naturally raven-hued hair does require upkeep. As the star posted to her Instagram account, “Being blonde is a full time job!”

Mousses, styling lotions and pomades are all good products for short hair. If you’re looking for volume, use a little bit of sculpture lotion at the crown for lift.

The Soft Bob

Francois Fortin, Education Director, at New York City’s Salon Ziba has teamed with colorist Colin Christopher to create a fresh, updated take on the iconic bob, dubbing it The Soft Bob. It’s a modern, breezy look for Spring and Summer. The details…

soft bob 2 soft bob 3THE CUT
“As clients come in for shorter summer looks, variations of the bob rule,” explains Fortin. “Now, though, the style is influenced by the airiness of lobs and texturized elements of tousled looks. For fine-haired clients especially, this remains the most flattering, freshest and most wearable look–and the easiest to style and grow out over time.”

An accomplished master of European cutting techniques and subtle, sexy styles, French-born Fortin created the hybrid Soft-Bob to combine the linear impact of a graphic bob, loosened with subtle layers and softened ends. “It looks and feels as breezy and light as summer itself,” says Fortin. “It combines styling versatility, texture, volume, and sensual movement.”

soft bob 5 soft bob 4THE COLOR
“Natural-looking, buttery pastel blondes are especially right this summer,” shares Christopher. “I created the Ray of Sun Balayage technique to accent a wide range of bobs and lobs, inspired by the soft textural accents that Francois cut into the Soft Bob. This  technique makes the color look even richer and more luminous, especially in the summer sun.”

To create Ray of Sun Balayage, he takes large, triangular sections of hair, then paints highlights of corresponding lightener on each one. He uses a signature paintbrush from his local hardware store, which allows him to penetrate color more deeply on the surface of each panel, for a soft, diffuse result. The shimmering look is designed to blend more naturally as it grows out, takes less time to do than traditional full-balayage techniques and can be quickly created–even during your lunch break!

To battle dry, brittle ends, have a stylist snip off about an inch of the hair’s length before adding a few additional layers throughout for definition.

THE POLISHED BRAID COMEBACK!

polished braid 1

polished braid 2Think about at this past season’s red carpet and you may remember one thing—the braided look was making a comeback. Some styles had a bit of a braid while others were full out fresh. The art of weaving as showcased in this look is demonstrated by the French masters at Jean Louis David. If you’re looking to make a hair-fashion statement this season and rock your own red carpet; find a braiding pro in your area and go for it–because basic never turned heads!

French Twist Ponytail

french twist ponytail 1

Ponytails are cute–but sometimes we need a little extra oomph. Enter the French Twist Ponytail, created by Orlando Pita, Hairstylist for TRESemmé, for the Hervé Léger runway show. “We wanted there to be a toughness to the hair but in a way that still felt quite natural and easy for a girl to wear away from the runway. We’ve played with a simple update on the classic low pony that leaves her with a sexy twist down to the nape of her neck. This is the look for when you need your exit from the party to make a bold statement!” says Pita. Here are the styling steps…
Herve Leger By Max Azria - Runway - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2015

  • Step 1: Work TRESemmé Runway Collection Get Sleek Blow Dry Balm from root to tip and dry hair straight with a soft bristle brush.
  • Step 2: Apply TRESemmé Extra Firm Control Gel from the roots to mid lengths and using a comb, create a deep side part to the crown of your head and then a straight part down the back of the hair.
  • Step 3: Starting an inch away from the hairline, comb one side of the hair back and then fold into a French twist down the back of the head and secure with bobby pins underneath. Repeat on the second side.
  • Step 4: Use hair pins to join both French twists together down the back on your head.
  • Step 5: Pull the lengths of your hair back into a low pony and finish the look with a firm-hold hairspray. Tame flyaways with a spritz of hairspray on a natural bristle toothbrush.
