sophisticates on the scene

Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide had the pleasure of attending George The Salon’s grand opening celebration last week. Owner George Gonzalez recently changed addresses, moving to swanky new digs in Chicago’s Gold Coast. The new salon space is gorgeous, with beautiful fixtures and wood and cement accents. A beautiful space to get beautiful!

A great trick for growing out your bangs is to braid them and position them on the side of the head with them directed across the forehead.

Mark Hill At Sophisticate’s!

So excited! Superstar stylist Mark Hill was in the Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide offices yesterday and we had a proper chat (he’s British!) about trends, hot hair and fabulous products. The Mark Hill product line is available in the United States at Walgreens and Ulta Beauty. Check out below for a message from Mark for you!

If your natural color is red, paint a few strands with a rich, reddish-brown lowlight to increase movement and the play between hues.

Texture Trends #HotHairstyles!

texture trends 1
Wella Professionals Global Creative Director Eugene Souleiman designed a wildly powerful tress silhouette with abundant texture for a recent runway show for desinger Esteban Cortazar. “Last season for this same show we braided the hair and when we took the braids out after the show, we liked the texture it created and wanted to bring that back this season,” shares Souleiman. “The soft organic textures and shapes were finished with a wet fringe; it’s as if the girl has just emerged from the humidity of the Amazon jungle and this contrast between wet and dry brings drama and modernity to the look.”texture trends 2

Get The Look:

1. Section the hair into three equal portions, ensuring that the hair is evenly distributed around the head.

2. Create three braids of equal thickness and weight and saturate with EIMI Dynamic Fix hairspray.

3. To quickly set the texture and create a defined shape to the curl, squash the braids between a flat iron.

4. texture trends 3Once dry and cooled, undo the braids and brush through with a bristle brush to create abundant volume. Spray with EIMI Dry Me to emphasize the texture.

5. Apply EIMI Shape Control mousse over the crown and work into hair so it looks “humid.” Rub the palm of your hand upwards against the grain of the hair to create a soft, broken texture.

6. To finish, create a unique shape to the front of each girl’s hair, using hair pins to secure areas and break up the fullness.

Help train those bangs by blow-drying with a round brush, moving them in the direction you want to go, and apply a touch of styling serum to keep them smooth.

dramatic undercut hairstyle

Scarlett Johansson, Rihanna, Tilda Swinton, Jada Pinkett Smith, Kelly Osbourne and Pink are some of the fierce women who have worn a shaved undercut with confidence, and attracted mainstream appeal.  Geneva Cowen, Artistic Director for Sam Villa, says. “In the past, feminine shapes have typically been rounder and men’s shapes leaner, but today we are applying both options to each gender. Shapes that can be styled ultra feminine or masculine, depending on mood.” So whatever cut look you desire, it’s about you!

Prep hair before coloring to be as healthy as possible—the more moisturized, the better it’s going to hold the color.

We’re so addicated to the fab ABC-TV show Revenge this season—can hardly wait until tonight to find out what happened after last week’s Victoria moment! Love actress Karine Varnasse’s short cut and what the #stylemasters on the show have done. Now for the popcorn!

Beauty Advice: April 26

Good hairspray is brushable. You want to hold the shape but still let the hair be flexible.

If your natural color is black, be bold and add a shot of deep cherry red or electric blue to a few strategically placed strands.

get in a routine

What’s your routine for beautiful hair? Talk to your stylist about the latest technology and the best products to keep your tresses looking fabulous. (Maybe at a #jcpsalon, where this gorgeous mane was created?)

Beauty Advice: April 24

Over-shampooing is a big problem. If your hair is dirty at the roots, coat the bottom half of hair with conditioner, then put shampoo just at the roots to clean your scalp.

katy perry goes hair prismatic

We love Katy Perry’s latest CoverGirl ad look—where her hair is dyed emerald green with matching eyeliner! The ad is for CG’s new Super Sizer Mascara, but superstar makeup artist Pat McGrath also used Intensify Me! eyeliner and CG shadow quads to create the look. Graphicly beautiful—this standout look is for those who want to create their own fireworks!

Beauty Advice: April 23

If you’re going from dark to light, put in a lot of highlights before going for a single process. With highlights, you can really get a good feel for it.

Wilde For Conscious Style

HM Conscious Exclusive 2

Have you seen Olivia Wilde in the new H&M Conscious Exclusive collection? With smooth locks in some outfits and loose, pretty waves in others (like the above), the actress is promoting the fashion collection, which uses fabrics such as hemp, organic linen, and organic leather for a more sustainable fashion future. “I love the Conscious Exclusive collection at H&M, both for the look, and also for its ethics. This is how all fashion should be: great style that’s naturally more sustainable,” says Olivia.

Getting a hair masque is a great route to take to help hair recover from over-processing and thermal tool damage.

Miranda’s Roots And Wings

FCA US LLC Ram Trucks Miranda LambertDid you catch the Ram commercial featuring Miranda Lambert during the Country Music Awards? Wondering more about it?

The Ram Truck brand campaign features Miranda Lambert and a custom “Roots and Wings” song she wrote exclusively for the campaign.

“I am very inspired by what the Ram brand stands for – being who you are, working hard, staying true to your roots,” Miranda said. “I wanted to write a song that would represent all of those things. ‘Roots and Wings’ is personal to me about where I come from and where I am going. The guys at Ram really made the lyrics come to life with the imagery and I hope it speaks to people the way it does to me.”

Miranda’s story is creatively told through live action video combined with illustrations, animation and vintage styling. Many of the landscapes are actual locations that are part of Lambert’s life and all of the featured still photos are her personal family photos.

And, of course, her hair looks great in the ads!

Hot rollers are your friend because they achieve things much faster than a curling iron—and they’re great for smoothing hair.

Hairstyling At Tonight’s Country Music Awards!

hairstyling at tonights

We can hardly wait for tonight’s 50th Academy of Country Music Awards celebration—country music’s party of the year. Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan will be the co-hosts at show broadcast live from Arlington, Texas at 8 pm-11:30 pm (EST) on CBS! One of our favorites, Kelly Clarkson (shown here), will be just one of the many guest presenters. Oh yeah!

Beauty Advice: April 19

Help red hair hues last longer by washing with tepid water, or as cool as you can stand it, to keep the color from fading.

mom star exclusive

Looks like our June issue, on newsstands now, is selling fast—yeah! One fab article is our #hairstyle change-up with top-rate telvision show Mom’s star Sadie Calvano. Here she is getting a few ideas from our magazine…but to see the finish you need to pick us up (what teases)!  Of course we have much, much more—but we like surprises.

Beauty Advice: April 18

If your natural color is brunette, add a few face-framing, coppery highlights to mimic the natural brightness in children’s hair. Ask your stylist to use pigment rather than bleach.

americana ponytail 1

americana ponytail 2We LOVE this Americana pony—a study in easy elegance. You can recreate the runway-worthy look with these pro tips from L’Oréal Paris Celebrity Hairstylist Mara Roszak:

1. Create loose curls with a wide-barreled iron.
2. Backcomb hair and spray with a touch of boosting hair spray
3. Secure strands into a ponytail just below the crown.
4. Separate a one-inch section of hair and wrap it around the hair tie, securing with a bobby pin.

Beauty Advice: April 17

While drying hair with a diffuser, dry sections one at a time by gently scrunching curls to control curls and keep them from straightening.

Acid Mermaid

Jamie Benny of Rush Hair provides an ethereal and delicate edge to this punk influenced look. Vibrant haircolor gives the hairstyle, from his New collection, the emotion and mood. Photography by Jemima Marriot.

Beauty Advice: April 16

Stuck in a hair rut? To keep things current and fresh, make a small shift each time you see your stylist. For example, add a few extra layers, a cheekbone-grazing fringe or a subtle asymmetric design.

really red makeover 1

really red makeover 2How does an educator inspire students to participate in class and stay interested in the technique at hand?  They get them involved the outcome so they have a vested interest in the content. That’s exactly the method Lori Panarello, owner of I.d salon (New York), used at BSG Baltimore Fashion Focus.

“Our model had a beautiful square face shape and green eyes, and I knew a round haircut shape and a bold killer red would look amazing on her. I then let the audience decide whether or not to leave the longer soft pieces. I think they chose well!” said Panarello.

The color used with Goldwell Topchic; the cut had longer pieces that were created with a razor to add movement and texture to the cut.

Beauty Advice: April 15

To keep hair healthy and styled, it should be trimmed at least every four to six weeks. This is especially crucial when wearing fringe, layers or a combination of the two.

Pro Do It Yourself Wool Dreadlocks!

Wool Dreadlocks 1

Yes, you read that right! Dreadlocks are slightly rebellious and youthful, but tough to maintain. Geneva Cowen, Artistic Director for Sam Villa, has an alternative way to create dreads with wool, making them less of a commitment and easier to maintain.

“I’ve been obsessed with fiber for the past year, and when working with different kinds of wool I realized how beautiful it looks when incorporated into human hair.  The dreads shown here were created with wool batts produced on a drum carder. When the fiber comes off the drum, it creates a blanket or fabric esthetic which is traditionally used for spinning yarn.  I’ve found many on Etsy by searching ‘art batts’ or ‘wool batts.’ You can also look for local fiber retailers that are open to custom batts to create your own color patterns….local weavers and spinners are also a great resource,” says Cowen.

Utilizing fiber batts for dreads allows for a quick process. Peel the fiber lengthwise for the desired length.  Roll the fiber between hands to create a dread-like rope and then the pieces can be pinned into any shape to create texture and dimension.

“I’ve actually used wool dreadlocks to jump start dreads for guests who are committed to the journey.”

Pro Advice!
Wool Dreadlock Intergraded Into Natural Hair-Step by Step
>>Take a 1/4″ to 1/2″ inch section.
>>Apply Redken powder grip 03 at the base of the section, back comb and twist the section for the first two rotations.
>>Take a section of the wool and begin backcombing and twisting the section. Roll the sections between your palms as you go down the length to compress the fibers.
>>Apply Redken powder grip 03 continually until the end of the dreadlock.

Keep in mind that wool repels all liquid products and shrinks with heat (think of a wool sweater in the dryer). If you are only interested in wearing them temporarily, they will shrink with the first shower and be extremely difficult to remove. Wool dreadlocks can also be manipulated and affected by heat and reacts in similar ways like human hair, so it can be curled and molded, too.

“Get some wool and starting playing with it, the possibilities are endless!” adds Cowen.

A blow-dryer with a cold-shot button can help you cool your hair down right away. The cool-down process is what smoothes, polishes and really finishes your look.
