“It means a lot to our students and instructors to be able to contribute our beauty skills to such an important cause,” saysLina Alvarado, Director of Education at Tricoci University of Beauty Culture. “These men, women and children are so inspiring and we’re honored to be able to pamper them to mark Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day!”

For women with a square face shape, any cut that softens your angular jaw and forehead is great. Try face-framing layers and highly texturized styles.

High On Christina

high on christina

Christina Aguilera wore a glamorous, sleek high-crown ponytail for the The Voice finale last week–a perfect look for the warm summer days coming up. Giannandrea, International Creative Director for Macadamia Professional, created the star’s high pony. “This look is all about modern sleekness, shine and an edgy effect, while also being playful and strong.” The mane pro tells us how to recreate the look on our own…

1. Start with wet hair and apply a blow-dry lotion (Christina’s hair was treated to Macadamia Professional Blow Dry Lotion) throughout the whole length to smooth and protect hair from the heat.

2. Blow-dry large sections very straight with a large round brush.

3. Brush all the hair upward to the top center of the crown. All the sides and back of the hair must be directed very tightly to the top center, and the front should be slightly softer and not as tight as the rest.

4. Pull hair into a ponytail and secure with a strong hair elastic.

5. Take a small section from the back bottom of the ponytail and mist hairspray (Macadamia Professional Flex Hold Shaping Hairspray was used for Christina) on the section to help the hair stay in place while wrapping around the base of the ponytail to cover the elastic band. Use straight pins all around while wrapping and smoothing it in place.

6. Lightly spray the top of the head with hairspray and gently run hands over the hair to smooth flyaways. Brush the ponytail and use spray to achieve the ultimate finish and shine for a glamourous look.

If you have really thick hair, figuring out what products work best and how much to use is key to effortless styling. Experiment!

Kelsea Ballerini

kelsea 1

Singer/songwriter Kelsea Ballerini is taking Nashville by storm. Hot off the heels of her self-titled EP, the charming Tennessee native just released her debut album last week, titled The First Time. We caught up with the “Love Me Like You Mean It” songstress to talk about her music, mane, makeup and more! See what the captivating country star has to say right here… Read the rest of this entry »

Avoid breakage by using cloth-covered elastic bands. Be kind to your hair and it will look fabulous, even in a simple ponytail.

We Remember And Honor

Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide honors all the veterans on today’s Memorial Day.

Above: The National World War II Memorial honors all 16 million people who served as part of the American armed forces, including the more than 400,000 who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

For a two-second style redo, try changing up where you part your hair. It will give you an instantly different look!

Sporting Great Hairstyles

Love this hairstyle by Paul Gehring of Barcelona—an edgey blonde shoulder-length vibe that has been roughed up a bit with finger combing. Totally awesome!

Beauty Advice: May 24

Wait 48 hours after coloring hair to shampoo it. Every time you wet hair you open the cuticle, so give hair time to properly absorb the color.

At the salon, your hair is rinsed multiple times after shampooing and conditioning. Do the same at home to avoid product build-up and dull hair.

Forget The Frizz

forget the frizz

Curls on the frizz? Your hair could be dehydrated, the biggest culprit when it comes to frizz. We can’t say it enough—hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. If you don’t, your parched, dry hair will grab moisture from the air around it, and that’s how you get frizz. Invest in a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, or a cleansing conditioner (tons of great products are available at jcp salons!), and take care of those beautiful, natural curls. #jcpsalon

Those with a heart/diamond face shape should draw attention to eyes and cheekbones with brow-grazing fringe or sideswept bangs.

So Blue

American Ballet Theatre's 75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee Spring Gala

Do we spy a trend happening in makeup? Coco Rocha stepped out this week with blue mascara that complemented her bright outfit.”I love to make a statement with my makeup and often try to give a bold twist on a classic look,” shares Coco. “The blue mascara  gave my whole look a contemporary feel, while still echoing back to that classic red carpet glamour every woman wants on a big night out.” And the mascara? Jay Manuel Beauty’s The Everything Mascara in Royale.

For natural-looking curls, alternate directions you are wrapping hair around a curling wand. The opposite-oriented spirals will bounce off each other.

#GrannyHair

Is going gray for you? The trend is way hot right now, according to CosmeticsDesign USA, and has been boosted by celebs going gray by choice. (For hashtag lovers, it’s all about #grannyhair.) #grannyhair is even boosting the #haircolor sales market! Would you go gray? Hmmmm.

Beauty Advice: May 20

Flat-iron small sections of hair rather than large chunks. That way, heat is distributed evenly and results are smoother.

Look Like JLo

look like jlo

Okay. We can’t all look exactly like Jennifer Lopez, but we can share in a bit of her fashion vibe. The star posted this hot shot on her Instagram account, promoting her line of clothing at Kohl’s. “Behind the scenes from my spring/summer Kohl’s collection. Hot new pieces available now.”

As for that hair, we’re bookmarking this one. Love the color, the waves. Everything.

Beauty Advice: May 19

If you wear a ponytail every day, be sure the hair is not pulled back too tight. Too much tension, too often, can lead to breakage.

BRIGHTLY BRILLIANT HAIRCOLOR!

We love this look so much—only wish we could pull off as well as this model! Stevie English, Hair Expo 2015 Colour Technician of the Year Finalist, did the beautiful hue. Hairstyling was designed by Missy Veyret, Hair Expo 2015 New Creative Force Finalist. The Sydney, Australia, stars of Stevie English Hair bring a fresh look for the season that is runway perfect! Photography by Ben Cook and makeup by Tahlia Plucke.  Don’t you just love?

Beauty Advice: May 18

If you have an oval/long face, chic bobs and long beachy waves are most flattering. Avoid short layers, which could make your face appear longer.

BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS!

CHRISSY TEIGEN

We can hardly wait to see all the beautiful hairstyles on this evening’s Billboard Music Awards (ABC)! We’re sure of one thing–co-host Chrissy Teigen (shown here) will not disappoint in the hair/fashion department. The music?  Guaranteed to be a pretty amazing night!

Don’t pluck out your gray hair! Doing so can damage the hair root, causing infection or leaving a scar.

A typical tip for a stylist is anywhere from 12 to 20 percent. For shampoo techs the range is anywhere from $2 to $5.

RaeLynn Goes Marilyn

raelynn goes marilyn

Country singer RaeLynn released a brand-new music video this week for the song “For A Boy.” You may remember the singer’s previous video, “God Made Girls,” a song that scored RaeLynn the highest charting debut single by a solo female artist in 2014.

“I am so excited about the ‘For A Boy’ music video!” shares RaeLynn. “My vision was a throwback to the Marilyn Monroe look with a modern feel.” We’re loving the singer’s retro-styled locks in Marilyn platinum!

If you want to see RaeLynn in person, she’ll be heading out on Rascal Flatts’ Riot tour this summer, and will also be performing as part of the Pepsi MidAmerica Women of Country campaign. This fall, she’ll be joining fellow Texan Miranda Lambert on the Roadside Bars and Pink Guitars tour.

Always warm up hair waxes and pomades in your hands first—it makes them easier to apply throughout your mane.
