The Heat Is On: Makeup For Summer

The weather is heating up, which means it’s time to switch up your makeup. Lori Lieb, Creative Director of Bodyography, has the following tips and tricks for putting forward your freshest face—like 2 Broke Girls‘ Kat Dennings and Beth Behr!

§ Make sure your skin is thoroughly moisturized before applying foundation or powder; this will ensure your makeup will glide onto the skin smoothly and not adhere to any dry patches.

§ Primer is an important step if you plan on keeping a full face of makeup fresh all day. Primer will create a barrier between your skincare and makeup, making sure the two keep working well all day long. Primers also control oil and shine, and give your skin an airbrushed look.

§ Waterproof products will help ensure your eye makeup stays put all day. Try using waterproof mascara and eyeliner for a smudge-free look that lasts.

§ Setting spray is a secret weapon for fresh-looking makeup. Spray it on before and after makeup application, and throughout the day for a pick-me-up.

§ Use a finely milled translucent setting powder to absorb excess oil during the day, but only reapply once or twice to avoid makeup caking and build-up. Stipple the powder down the t-zone for a natural and thin layer of product.

§ Invest in an eye primer if you plan on wearing eyeshadow; this will stop the shadow from creasing and will keep your eye-look on point all day.

§ To keep a bold lip from fading, layer your products. Start with a lip liner all over the lip, followed by your desired shade of lipstick. Apply two layers of the lipstick, blot, then apply one more layer for all-day color.

Color-treated hair requires lots of moisture. Try deep-conditioning tresses every two weeks.

What The Heck Is Co-Washing?

what the heck is cowashing

Co-washing, cleansing conditioner, no-poo—no matter how you say it, the idea is basically the same: giving up the shampoo and washing your hair with a special conditioner instead. Matrix Celebrity Stylist George Papanikolas explains how Matrix’s Biolage Cleansing Conditioner gently cleanses the hair while conditioning. “In the first five minutes, it conditions the hair. Then it morphs into a cleanser that lifts the dirt out.” Intrigued? Be sure to pick up the current issue of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide (on newsstands now with Kelly O. on the cover) to read the full interview with Papanikolas and get the whole 411 on the co-washing movement. It’s summer, and if you’ve grown too hot thinking about all that hair, maybe it’s time to consider a very cute short snip, like this one from jcp salon. A pixie cut is not only cool on the neck, it’s versatile, too—just like a chin-skimming bob. Your choice. Are you excited yet about spending time poolside with something short and sassy to show off? #jcpsalon

On Trend: The Wavy Bob

on trend the wavy bob

on trend the wavy bob 3Stylist Ashley O’Dell of Michael’s Salon & Spa in Centerville, OH, knows what’s on-trend, and knows how to create it. She made Jessica a summery, buttery blonde, then set out to create pretty swirls. O’Dell started by priming damp hair with a volumizing foam, then blow-dried locks. The style pro created waves by using a flat iron to make long, relaxed bends in the hair. She finished with a mist of Aquage Sea Salt Spray for texture, and added smooth detail with a polishing creme. Shine spray topped it all off. So pretty!

We’re turning the corner into summer, which means higher temperatures and more time outside. You could just pull your hair back like you always do, but why? Ponytails were all over the runway this spring and showed how to take this simple style up a notch. The twisted ponytail shown here is easy and transforms the everyday into something much more interesting. (You can thank jcp salon for the cool twist!) #jcpsalon

Short Hair Braid–Starring Jaime Pressly

short hair braid starring jaime pressly

Even short hairistas can get in on the braid trend. Hairstylist Jonathan Hanousek created a stunning look for Jaime Pressly, who has shaved sides and a longer crown length. According to Hanousek, “For Jaime’s look we wanted something glamourous but with a twist. She loves her hair sleek but I wanted to see some texture, so I created her braided hawk.” Here’s how he did it…

Step 1: First I blow-dried the crown with a vent brush, directing the hair up and towards the top of the head. I used a small round brush to refine the front hairline.

Step 2: I worked a small amount of CHI Deep Brilliance Glisten in the palms of my hands and worked it through the hair to smooth and add shine.

Step 3: To create her braided hawk, I French-braided the crown with medium tension, secured the braid with a clear band, tucked the tail under and secured with bobby pins. I used hairpins to tighten the braid and help everything to lay flat to the head. I then gently pulled out the front hairline to add height and create texture. Using a tail comb and hair spray I smoothed any flyaways on the braid.

Step 4:  To control the short sides, I used a few shots of spray wax and smoothed with my fingers. I finished the look with BioSilk Silk Therapy Finishing Spray Firm Hold.

For Your Viewing (And Styling) Pleasure…

for your viewing and styling

A suit may make the man, but unkempt or greasy hair can take away that mojo fast. With Fathers’ Day around the corner, maybe Dad could use an update to his styling routine. A fresh cut (and a free beard trim at #jcpsalon!) and a few styling products can keep him at the top of his game.

CMT Red-Carpet Cutie!

cmt red carpet cutie

We loved Nashville star Aubrey Peeples’ look on the red carpet last night at the CMT awards. Not only was her cape dress totally jealous-worthy, but her melted sombre shade is one to take to the salon. Her darker base hue slowly transforms into brighter ends with tons of layers and volume. Love, love, love, love, love.
