Star Upsweep

Star Upsweep

Stylist Marissa Marino from Nine Zero One salon created a textured upsweep for Once Upon A Time star Jennifer Morrison. Simple, but elegant, and chock full of volume! Marino shares how you can achieve the same look at home…

  1. Starting with your natural texture, spray Unite Texturiza Spray throughout the hair, and back-comb the entire head to create volume and even more texture.
  2. Brush the sides back, leaving volume at the front bang section; loosely comb the front portion back.
  3. Loosely twist length upward, pinning in place; leave texture showing and allow ends of hair to spill out. .
  4. Place two black headbands around the middle of the crown, holding front section back and creating a unique shape.

All That Glitters…Is You!

fsfwny05.02com-nars-for-creatures-of-the-windKeep those pencils sharp and the sparkle going! The makeup look at the Creatures Of The Wind runway show was all about sharp lines contrasted with splashes of glitter. The look is very eclectic with a lot of layering, which plays off the layering in the collection,” shares Lead Makeup Artist Aaron de Mey for NARS Cosmetics. “It’s punk, tough looking. I love the richness of the gold against the toughness of the black. It’s an updated, modernized take on eyeliner.”

We think it’s the perfect, extreme cat eye for a splashy party. To get the look at home, try NARS Black Moon Eyeliner Pencil and Black Valley Eye Paint for the black “wings,” and Iskandar Eye Paint for the golden touch. Voila!

Making Up With Gwen

URBAN DECAY ANNOUNCES THE UD GWEN STEFANI COLLECTION

She’s on The Voice, on the stage and now she can be part of your makeup routine! Urban Decay has announced Gwen Stefani as their first-ever celebrity designer collaboration. The singer worked closely with the makeup company on every detail of the limited-edition collection, from the shades to the packaging.

“When Urban Decay came to me to collaborate, I immediately thought it was a perfect match. The way they’ve built their company is very similar to my aesthetic and approach. It’s all about creative self-expression, being strong and not being afraid to go outside of the box.” says Gwen.

“Everyone in my life knows I absolutely love makeup. From a very young age, it was an artistic passion of mine. I actually used to be a makeup artist. I love wearing makeup and having so many ways to express myself through it. It’s my war paint. To be able to do a collaboration with people who get that concept and who are just as passionate about it is a dream come true. We’ve made and created products that I actually wear every single day. It’s the real thing. I’m obsessed with everything we’ve done, and I can’t wait to share it.”

The UD | Gwen Stefani collection launches November 22.

Ashley’s Sleek & Sexy Waves

2015 iHeartRadio Music Festival

Style Link Smooth Setter 15-23-13Pretty Little Liars star Ashley Benson was all about sleek, sexy, shiny hair at the iHeart Radio Music Festival this past weekend, thanks to stylist Bridget Brager, who used Matrix Style Link products. “Ashley’s makeup team went rock-and-roll glam–her eyes were so fierce, I knew her hair had to be smooth and gorgeous,” shares Brager. Here’s how she did it…

1. “On Ashley’s damp hair, I used a dime-sized amount of Style Link Smooth Setter from mid-shaft to ends to ‘skinny’ the hair and enhance shine.

2. After blow-drying, I created a deep side part at a slight angle.

3. Working in large sections, I set Ashley’s hair using a ceramic flat iron. After each section was pressed, I clipped the hair in large rollers to cool.

4. After all the rolled hair was cooled, I removed the rollers and used a pea-sized amount of Style Link Smooth Setter (again!) and a pea-sized amount of the Style Link Gloss Booster, mixed them together and raked the product through Ashley’s hair from roots to ends.

5. To finish the look I used a flat boar bristle brush and Style Link Style Fixer Finishing Hairspray and brushed the hair smooth and into shape.”

Emma At The Emmys

emma at the emmys 1

emma at the emmys 2The Emmy Awards were last night, and Scream Queens star Emma Roberts was a presenter–but she presented more than just an award: she presented old Hollywood glam! Nikki Lee from Nine Zero One salon styled the star’s sultry side swept curls in a modern take on old Hollywood glamour. Lee shares her steps on how to get the look:

>>Apply a volumizing products to roots and mid-shaft, then blow-dry hair, using a 2″ round brush. Set hair with Unite 7 Seconds Glossing Dry Thermal Shine for added gleam and to protect against heat.

>>Working in 2″ sections, wrap hair around the outside of large curling iron, working in a downward direction. Pin each curl with a clip and mist with hairspray; allow hair to cool for about 15 minutes.

>>Once cooled, take the pins out and began brushing the curls out with a boar bristle brush, shaping into waves as you go. This is a key element to creating that old Hollywood wave!

>>Mist with hairspray to finish; Lee used Unite Session Max Hairspray.

Trending Hair Hue: Rose-Gold

trending hue rose-gold

Dascha Polanco (she plays Dayanara “Daya” Diaz on the hit Netflix show Orange Is The New Black) traded in her trademark tangerine for a new hue–hair hue, that is. The star showed off gorgeous peachy,  rose-gold strands at New York Fashion Week. Celebrity stylist Cynthia Alvarez of Cloutier Remix shares the inspiration… “We wanted to do something completely different from her previous hair  looks that was also on trend for Fashion Week. We decided bangs + bob + rose-gold were IT! All three of those are trending for fall, plus they are super complementary on Dascha.”

Alvarez used Pravana professional haircolor to achieve the cool color, starting with a ChromaSilk Express Tones in Copper for a slightly metallic finish. To get the gorgeous shade, Alvarez shares, “I must’ve spent an hour or so mixing different colors trying to find the perfect combo to give me the peachy rose-gold I wanted. I combined Pravana Vivids Pastels in Too Cute Coral with a touch of Vivids Silver and applied it to the entire head for the perfect shade. What I love the most about this color is it can change tones depending on the type of lighting. In natural light, it reads rose-gold. In dark spaces, it looks copper-ish. And in bright lighting, it reads peachy.”

Beauty Changes Lives

beauty changes lives

The Beauty Changes Lives Foundation and the Leo Passage Endowment Fund have honored 25 beauty educators from across the U.S. with the BCL | Leo Passage Postgraduate Scholarship. Each scholarship winner receives up to $2,000 to attend the Pivot Point Creative Jam Chicago, November 15-16, 2015.

The scholarship winners represent the first class of the BCL | Leo Passage Postgraduate Scholarship recipients. First announced at Cosmoprof 2014, the Leo Passage Endowment Fund is funded through a generous $1 million grant by the Passage family. The postgraduate scholarships are administered by the Beauty Changes Lives Foundation and this year will celebrate what happens when art, design and technology collide in the classroom.

“My father, Leo Passage, was a lifelong learner and had a passion to help others achieve their artistic and professional potential through ongoing education and discovery,” said Pivot Point Chairman and CEO Robert Passage. Winners of the scholarship reflect a shared commitment to lifelong learning, with the most experienced winner, Donna Johnson, graduating beauty school in 1970 and other recipients graduating in the 1980s, 1990s and through 2012.

Put A (Colorful!) Nail In It

CND for Libertine S/S 2016 - Backstage

We know fall is here, but the designers are already thinking of spring and summer for 2016, and by the looks of it, it could be quite a colorful fashion season. CND exhibited an abstract collection of graphic nail designs at Libertine’s Spring/Summer 2016 Show at Skylight Clarkson Sq. in New York.

The bold, tidy nail looks created by the elite artists of the CND Design Lab Team were hand-painted with Shellac Brand 14+ Day Nail Color and Vinylux Weekly Polish in nearly neon shades of yellow, pink, blue, orange and green. Four distinct nail styles were scattered on each model’s nails for an overall vibe of organized chaos:

>>Blinky Blocks: These dual-toned color-blocked nails featured clean lines and contrasting colors.
>>Checkmate: A bright checkerboard pattern set against a white base made for a restrained pop art effect.
>>Bad Penny: Based on a metallic rose gold shade from the upcoming Spring 2016 color collection, and adorned with copper foil and a mosaic of miniature pennies, these monochromatic nails were an invaluable statement piece.
>>Veronica: These expensive-looking nails were completely encrusted with mirrored glass-cut baguettes in various sizes, a reflection of the embellished garments.

NYFW — The Hip Pony

nyfw the hip pony

New York Fashion Week is where the cool kids hang and the hairstyles are even hipper than the crowd. At the Ryan Roche runway, stylist James Pecis created a ponytail look inspired by ’90s minimalism, in the vein of a ballerina student between rehearsals. Here’s how to get the look:

>> Prep hair with Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray and rough dry it in. Give the hair a natural and easy center part.

>> Using a 1″ curling iron, bump up the front part of the hair to create more texture and give a natural wave to the hair.

>> Work Phyto Professional Matte Texturizing Paste through the ends. Pull hair back into a low ponytail and roughly twist down to loop the hair into a low knot. To make the hair look as natural as possible, leave out 2 inches toward the end of the twist so it sticks out on the right side. Mist with hairspray for hold.

Hair: James Pecis for Beauty.com using Phyto.
