Gina’s Jane Look

JANE THE VIRGIN

We love Gina Rodriguez as the title character in Jane The Virgin–and we’re not alone, seeing as how the actress won a Golden Globe for her role! And, of course, we love her tress style. Michelle Rene Elam, department head hair for Jane the Virgin, shares her on-set styling tips for how you can duplicate Gina’s look as Jane…

“Jane is a spirited character full of life, love and overcoming obstacles; I keep the same energy in her hair,” shares Elam. “To get this kind of flow at home, wrap strands of hair around a 1-1/4″ iron; I like to wind in the same direction for a fluid shape. Run your fingers through the hair with White Sands Orchids Oil to create movement.”

Kate’s Sleek Style

"Rock The Kasbah" New York Premiere

Actress Kate Hudson sported at sleek and sexy tress style at a recent red-carpet event–and celebrity hairstylist David Babaii is sharing how he created the look… “I wanted to create something chick, sleek and effortless to compliment Kate’s personality,” he shares. “What I love about this style is that it is so simple to create, and doesn’t require much product which can weigh the hair down.”

1. First, I used a massaged a smoothing cream through Kate’s towel-dried hair from roots to tips, combing through her hair. Then, I blow-dried her hair using a round brush.

2. I parted the hair down the center and divided it into three sections: two in the front and one in the back. Before styling the hair, I spritzed each section Matrix Style Link Heat Buffer Thermal Styling Spray for heat protection. I then used a flat iron with rounded edges to create subtle bends at the end of her hair.

3. Finally, I used a dime sized amount of glosser for shine, and finished with Matrix Style Link Style Fixer Finishing Hairspray.

coming up

In fact, Stenson and the jcp salon team are right this minute working on hot hair looks and creating a photo shoot (that’s Stenson in white looking over digital images!) to share in the coming weeks. A Great Cut

a great cut

What’s better than having a great cut? Having a great cut you can style multiple ways! Pro stylist Alecia “Abby” Norebeck of Michael’s Salon & Spa in Dayton, OH, created this fabulous bob with a tapered nape, then styled it two ways–a full-volume silhouette and an elegant upsweep. Pretty!

P.S. That’s Abby in the photos! She did the cut on herself!

Fight frizz! Avoid towel-drying your hair, as your strands could end up drying a little poofy and unkempt.

Pony Up!

pony up

Braids seem to be all the rage–but hold the style phone! Not to be outdone, Wella Professionals Global Creative Director Eugene Souleiman has upped the style power of the ponytail during a recent runway show. “We came up with a tribal techno style with intricate angular features and graphic shapes. It’s strong and glossy, but at the same time it’s also very playful,” shares Souleiman. “I loved the idea of creating a braid, without braiding. Instead of the usual plaits, we’re tying the hair in very tight, angular sections to the head.” Ponytails!

Here’s the how-to…

1.   Create a wide zigzag shape parting, and separate hair into four sections.

2.   Apply Wella Professionals EIMI Stay Firm to hair to add shine, gloss and texture.

3.   Start with the first section and tightly tie hair to the head at approx. 1 inch wide intervals, creating a ‘no-braid braid’ effect and leaving the ends loose, like a ponytail. Repeat for each zigzag section.

4.   Spray Wella Professionals LuxeOil Light Oil Shine Spray to the lengths of the hair and use ribbons to bind the base of each tail.

5. To finish the look, apply Wella Professionals EIMI Sculpt Force onto the hair for maximum shine and gloss.

For those rocking a pixie cut, channel your inner rockstar by using a dab of pomade to amp up the texture of your piecey strands.

Jamie’s BoHo Glam Waves

jamies boho glam 11

Joico’s celebrity hairstylist Paul Norton created this sexy glamour-girl look on actress Jamie Chung — and we’ve got the 411 on how he did it, right here…

>>Jamie started with clean, damp hair and I tousled it dry. Once fully dry, I used a round brush at the roots for volume, and on the ends for smoothness. I made sure to avoid the middle of the hair to keep the texture as raw as possible.

jamies boho glam 3>>Next, I curled Jamie’s hair with two different size curling irons: a 1-1⁄4 inch and a 1 inch. I alternated between the irons on each section, as well as alternated the direction of the curl, in order to give the look a freer feeling. This technique also pushes the hair in a way that helps it appear fuller and less confined. It’s a very “tailored look of effortlessness.”

>>Once the hair was curled I gave Jamie’s hair a deep side part, which not only gave her a more glam effect, but also more root volume.

jamies boho glam 4>>I then had Jamie tilt her head back and I sprayed Joico Hair Shake through the ends, using my fingers as a comb to break up the curls and liven everything up a bit. I positioned the hair around her face and tucked one side behind her left ear.

>>Lastly, I finished Jamie’s hair using Joico Flip Turn to ensure the look would hold throughout the day, and to control any flyaways.

Looking for the ideal hairbrush? Rubber-toothed brushes work well on damp strands, while boar bristles are nice on dry hair.

STYLE ME PINK/Susan G. Komen Benefit

style me pink 1

style me pink 3Good beauty and a great cause—what’s not to love? Keratin Complex stylist Woody Michleb styled gorgeous actress AnnaLynne McCord’s hair for the “Style Me Pink” celebrity fashion show during Los Angeles fashion week. Benefiting Susan G. Komen Los Angeles County, the runway featured various celebrities in pink couture. For AnnaLynne’s hair, Michleb encouraged the 90210 star’s natural curls, adding extra twirls and lots of volume. Sharp-Tressed Man

A suit may make the man, but unkempt hair can take away that mojo fast. With the right cut, it’s easy to turn hair into an asset. This faded edge and deep side part from the style pros at jcp salon shows off clean lines with a modern, loose twist. With a little pomade, it’s easy to take this look from weekend to business. #jcpsalon #InStyleAtJCP

Get that edgy city girl style you’ve been craving by asking your stylist for a razor cut instead of your typical scissor snip.

Faux Fringe

faux fringe 1

One of the fringe benefits of fashion weeks? Seeing all the hot hair trends. For the Self-Portrait collection from London designer Han Chong, Bumble and bumble editorial stylist Jimmy Paul created strong, boyish and graphic hair to contrast with the romantic fashion collection. “The look is very androgynous, very uniform,” shares Paul. “Every single girl had a bang covering one eye. We wanted to off-set the clothes, which are super feminine.”

Bumble and Bumble - SS16 - Self PortaitTo style, Paul used Bb. All-Style Blow Dry and flat-ironed lengths straight. He then created a low ponytail and secured hair with a bungee at the nape. For the fringe, he used 100% virgin European hair bangs that perfectly matched the sleek, fine texture of the models’ side-parted, smoothed-down hair. “We wanted a simple yet powerful way to offset very feminine looks,’” explained Paul. “I used House Of European Hair Clip-On Bangs, my current favorite, to create a modern deconstructed edge. We just clipped them in sideways, then cut them down with a razor to tweak them on each model.” He finished with Bb. Classic Hairspray.

Grooming Kingdom

kingdom

Okay, it may seem like we’re just posting a photo of a cute guy, but really, there’s good reasons why we’re showing off hottie Nick Jonas as our Daily Dose Of Style today:

1. He has awesome hair! Nick has some serious hair texture and we love when he lets it curl up just a little bit to add height.

2. Season 2 of his DirecTV Audience series Kingdom premieres tonight, with Nick playing MMA fighter Nate. (When you see him with his super-short hair, he’s filming for this role!)

3. “Jealous,” “Levels,” “Chains.” His music is our earworm.

4. We absolutely adored his argyle sweaters and golf shoes on Scream Queens.

5. He’s just really, really cute.

See? We told you. Totally legit.

When creating spirals with a curling iron, the trick to keeping the shape of the curls is to finger through them and mist a bit of hairspray. Don’t brush the curls!

The Perfect Selfie!

Rosie’s Tress Tale

rosies tress tale

Even future supermodels have hair issues. Just a little over a year before she was discovered at age 16, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley had a haircolor disaster. “I pestered my mum to get a box of hair dye with brush-on highlights, and I ended up with two massive peroxide streaks, like a badger,” she recalls. “I remember crumbling on to the bathroom floor and sobbing my eyes out.”

How did she solve her problem? Evidently, not very well. “I think we bought about 10 boxes of hair dye to try and color it back and it just ended up a kind of murky red and really damaged. There are not photographs of me for that whole year.”

Luckily, there are plenty of gorgeous-haired Rosie pictures out there now!

If you think you’ve added too much volume, try pulling a few strands back to create a partial upsweep, which flattens the volume in the right places.

FRENCH COFFEE HOUSE HAIR!

French Coffee House hair

It’s Sunday and we’re in the mood for a steeping cup of java. What else? How about a stunning texture that sets your look apart, like this multiple texture hair design by Geneva Cowen, Artistic Director for Sam Villa.  This style, which is so reminiscent of 1970’s French coffee houses, is loaded with volume and texture, and has a flair that is as individual as you. Now back to that cup of java!
