This holiday season, the right hair accessory can mean the difference between a look that’s naughty or nice—pick which one you want to be in our latest issue!

Perfect Party Hair For New Year’s Eve

party hair

If you’re still looking for the perfect New Year’s Eve hair, this is a great silhouette that won’t take too long. Created by The René Furterer Paris Artistic Team, led by Oliver Szilagyi, all you need is two covered elastic bands and a curling iron.

Part hair in the center and French braid two small sections on each side from the part to the temples; secure with bands. If you want to add a little detail to the back, continue the braids in a “wreath” around the head and join together at the center back of head.

Use your curling iron to bend hair into curls, then brush into waves. Tease hair if you want more volume.

Mist hair with a glosser for extra shine.

The bonus part of this look? As the night goes on, just shake through the roots with your fingers to bring back the volume and end the night on a “sexily tousled” vibe!

Revamp long hair by asking your stylist to take off some inches, chop in shorter layers and chop sideswept bangs.

Everyday Chic

Looking for short-chic inspiration? Look no further than this swingy custom bob by stylist Lora “Lorann” Thompson of Michael’s Salon & Spa in Dayton, OH. To achieve the voluminous finish, Thompson blow-dried the hair with a volumizing foam, then used a 1- 1/4″ curling iron to create curves, and a flat iron along the edges. A touch of crafting clay was used to add shine and detail the style. Gorgeous!

Hairspray has a tendency to dull brown locks. Instead, try a spritz of shine serum.

Shattered Nail Art

shattered glass 1

Add a little sparkle to your nails with the “shattered glass” nail art trend. CND’s International Education Ambassador Fiona Wallace shares how this look is created in the salon with professional CND products…

shattered glass 2

>>Two thin layers of CND Shellac in the shade Peacock Plume are applied to nails, with each layer cured for one minute

>>One thin layer of CND Shellac in the shade Clearly Pink is applied. This layer is not cured.

>>With the tip of an orange wood stick, CND Additive Crystal Crush is applied to nails, piece by piece. A variety of medium and smaller shards are pressed into the sticky layer of uncured Clearly Pink. Nails are cured for one minute.

shattered glass 3>>A top coat, CND XPRESS5TM is applied over nails and cured for one minute.

“As nail professionals, we love and are excited by trends like this,” shares Wallace. “They allow us to take ‘painting nails’ to a new level.” Head to your favorite nail salon and see what fab creation they can do for you!

Minimize breakage by making sure hair is completely wet before shampooing.

You’ve Got That James Dean Daydream…

James Dean - Sexy Hair Ads

James Dean. Even Taylor Swift still sings about him and his iconic look. So it’s no wonder haircare brand Sexy Hair has chosen him to be the brand ambassador for their Style Sexy Hair line. Starting in April, you’ll see his smoldering glances and whipped-up hair in ads and more.

We say we’re looking forward to April.

Dry shampoo isn’t just for absorbing oil in dirty hair. You can also use it as a volumizing tool. Spritz on roots, style normally and go!

Every woman needs a good blow dryer. Having one that feels great in your hand, doesn’t damage your hair and gets the job done is really important.

Blue Christmas

The darkest color of eyeshadow really should be enhancing the lash line as the liner. The liner is going to give you the biggest impact to make your eyes stand out.

Last-Minute Gift…

Need a last-minute stocking stuffer? While we’d like to say he’s available, we’re really only referring to his grooming. Perhaps your guy needs a little inspiration to start the new year off in style? Tuck this photo next to a chocolate bar along with a salon certificate. He’ll love it!

Choose sulfate-free color-protecting shampoos and conditioners to preserve new mane hues longer.

The No-Shave Shave Look

no shave shave

You’re a trendy gal–you like to keep pace with what’s hip, hot and happening. Like the shaved trend, where you razor a section of hair down to nothing. Except, you don’t really want to get rid of your beautiful, beautiful hair that took you forever to grow out.

Enter this perfect solution that can give you a similar effect, only with way hotter styling edge. The styling pros at Jacques Dessange in Paris sectioned off hair in a checker-board pattern, creating thin ponytails that make their way to the back of the head. The result is all the length on one side, with a “short” opposite side.

Cool, right? And without the sad pile of hair on the floor…

Beauty Advice: December 23

Don’t have time for an elaborate updo? Try a sleek ponytail or a loose, soft side braid for a different nighttime look.

BCL social media

In March, thousands of beauty professionals will gather in Chicago to attend America’s Beauty Show. During this same time, something very special will be happening as well: the 4th Annual BCL Experience! The event is sponsored by The Beauty Changes Lives (BCL) Foundation, which elevates the perception of the rich and rewarding careers in the Beauty and Wellness Industry through the gifts of educational scholarships. BCL also unites and inspires professionals to pay forward their success by mentoring the next generation – NEXTGEN.

The BCL Experience will present the Legacy Award to Dr. Howard Murad for his visionary leadership, humanitarian values and his passion for mentoring the NEXTGEN throughout his commitment to lifelong education. It will also include an evocative runway presentation, powered by Pivot Point, entitled SHOUT YOUR BEAUTY!, featuring work by the NEXTGEN of the beauty industry.

The event should be a truly beautiful time, and Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide will be sharing more about the BCL Experience in the months to come. Can’t wait!

Step-by-Step Smokey Eye

step by step smokey eye

If one of your resolutions for 2015 was to learn how to do the perfect smokey eye–you’ve still got time! Bassam Fattouh Cosmetics shares this step-by-step guide, including photos!

  1. Trace your upper lash line generously with black eyeliner pencil.
  2. Using a blending brush, smudge directly over the penciled area and blend. (Bassam Fattouh Cosmetics has a Smoke Blender Brush that’s perfect for this.)
  3. Apply black shadow in a half-moon motion to the area right above the crease of the eyelid.
  4. With a brush, blend the shadow so it spreads toward the area right above the crease and outer edge of your eye, until you cover the entire area right below the brow bone. Keep blending until color spreads evenly.
  5. To add more nuance to your look, use a brush to blend a silver shadow all over your eyelid, from lash line to the crease.
  6. Trace a thin line on your lower eyelid with a black eyeliner pencil.
  7. Using a brush, blend liner.
  8. Use a black cream eyeliner (try Bassam Fattouh Eyeliner Cream in Leyl) to trace the natural shape of your eye from the inner corner outward, finishing with a thick swipe that points toward the of your eyebrow.
  9. Brush, fill-in and shape your eyebrows with a brow pencil.
  10. Apply mascara gently to your lashes. Start from the bottom root and work your way up to the top.

Beauty Advice: December 22

When blow-drying hair, don’t use the brush too soon. Separate tangles with fingers until hair is about 80 percent dry, then brush.

All We Want For Christmas…

All I Want 1

all i want 2…Is the perfect lipstick. Perhaps it’s the All I Want shade from the M.A.C. Mariah Carey collection, available in December. “M.A.C. has been my go-to makeup brand for as long as I can remember,” says the singer. “I’m so thrilled to be collaborating with them on a lipstick, just in time for the holiday season! All I Want is elegant, sophisticated and glamourous.”

The lipstick is a sneak peek of Mariah’s full collection, Beauty Icon, coming out in 2016. “Mariah is the over the top pop and beauty icon. She exudes elegance, glamour, sophistication and a sense of fun. Her Beauty Icon collection will be everything you think of when you think M.A.C, and Mariah,” hints M.A.C. Senior Vice President/Group Creative Director, James Gager.

Save money at the salon and give your locks a break by embracing the ombré trend. It’s OK for a little roots to show!

texture time

‘Tis the season to try something a little different—and letting that beautiful texture reign supreme. This look by Ivana Volhejnov+ says it all. We love the dramatic makeup, too! Gorgeous!

Beauty Advice: December 20

If you rock extensions, prevent tangling by brushing hair thoroughly twice a day with a gentle brush.

Beauty Advice: December 19

Never let your blow-dryer turn toward the back because that is where the fan is located. You run the risk of having your hair sucked in, burning your hair and shortening the circuit in your blow-dryer.

Pretty Perfect

pretty perfect

From the color to the curls, we think this swirled style is perfectly pretty. Created by the salon pros at jcp salon, highlights of wheat and honey flow through a golden brunette base for the ultimate collaboraton of color. Light volume at the crown works its way through super-sized curls that float about the shoulders. We more than likey–we lovey. #jcpsalon #instyleatjcp

Beauty Advice: December 18

Choosing the hair hue that’s best for you isn’t just about your eye color and skin ton, it’s also about your lifestyle. The further you stray from your natural color, the more often you will need to come in for touch-ups, which can be time consuming.

Musical Numbers

musical numbers

Did you miss out on getting your Adele tickets today? That’s okay–you can still watch one of the hottest concerts around without even changing out of your jammies.

Taylor Swift will be releasing The 1989 World Tour LIVE on December 20 (that’s this Sunday!). The video was filmed in front of 76,000 fans at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney, Australia, on November 28. You’ll get to see Taylor’s performance, never-before-seen footage filmed backstage and during rehearsals, and some of her surprise musical guests, including Alanis Morissette, St. Vincent, Ellie Goulding, Fetty Wap, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, Lisa Kudrow, Lorde, Miranda Lambert, Selena Gomez and more (not to mention members of her girls squad like Gigi Hadid, Hailee Steinfeld, Karlie Kloss, Julie Roberts, Lena Dunham, etc., etc.).

And, of course, all those great costume changes, pretty hair and lots of red lipstick.

Beauty Advice: December 17

Happy Cinch de Mayo! Consider livening up your strands with a fiery shade of red. Or clip-in red extensions and paint the town you-know-what!

Smitten With Short

smitten with short

Two great short looks we can totally see heading into the salon with. One, a brilliant layered bob in the palest of blondes; the other, a pixie snip in a raven shade. We can’t decide which we love best. Both by Craig Rhodes of Smitten Hairdressing in Canberra, Australia.

If you have midday frizz, apply pomade or serum to the problem area to temporarily fix the problem. Olive oil or lotion will also do the trick.

Halo, Fab Party Hair

halo fab party hair

We welcome this very pretty tress inspiration into our party-hair portfolio, courtesy of pro stylist Guido, Redken Global Creative Director, who incorporated a delicate necklace into the look as a romantic halo of sorts.

Here’s how he did it…

FIRST, I prepped the hair with Redken’s satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion and then created a natural center part using my fingers. I blow-dried the hair using a round brush.

NEXT, I put a very natural movement through the hair using a large barrel curling iron. I bent random sections of hair around a 1-1/2 inch curling iron.

THEN, I placed a necklace over the top of the crown, and secured it by twisting side sections of the hair around the sides and back of the jewelry, adding hair pins.

LAST, I plaited the back length of the hair into a low, loose braid.

Beauty Advice: December 15

If your hair is naturally straight, add curls or waves by blow-drying quickly and curling random one-inch section around a curling iron.
