Then And Now

then and now

Lily Collins showed off the ultimate makeover in her Instagram post: from 1930’s dark curves and coils to 2016’s cherry-cola red piecey bob! The retro look was designed her for period move The Last Tycoon, and the hip vibe is from her current ‘do. Loving the contrast, and the look of both!

Calling all cosmetology students! Rosy Salon Software has cash for you! Rosy Rewards is a $10,000 annual scholarship fund designed to give cosmetology students an opportunity to further their education by providing funds to help cover a portion of their tuition.

“We are very passionate about the salon and spa industry and want to reward others who are as well,” said Jim Bower, founder of Rosy Salon Software. “This newly launched scholarship is also our way of giving back to the industry and giving a leg-up to those who need and deserve it the most.”

Quarterly Rosy Rewards scholarships include $1500 first place, $500 second place and $500 third place prizes, which are paid directly to the participating school and are to be applied toward the student’s tuition.

Cool For The Summer

cool for the summer

Demi Lovato knows how to work her bob for maximum impact–and we do mean maximum when it comes to volume. Her wavy texture takes hold on the sides and back, with a little sleek action in the front. A bit of a tousle and a flip this way and that, and you’ve got a ‘do that moves with you and moves like nobody’s business. Love. #hairgoals #summerstyle #andthelips!

Curls love moisture and leave-in conditioners with protein are great for smoothing coils and discouraging frizz.

Go Big And Go Out

go big and go out

Humidity can be your friend, if you let it. Instead of fighting those high-temperature, dew-laden days, why not go with your naturals curls, enhanced by the extra moisture in the air? Vanessa Hudgens offer us serious #hairgoals with her curls. Just twist a few ringlets with a curling iron here and there and let Mother Nature take care of the rest…

Products that contain sulfate can be harsh on your hair. Sulfate strips your color because it dries out your hair, which needs moisture in order to maintain the vibrancy of your haircolor.

Dip-Dye, Part 2

dip dye part 2

Remember when dip-dye was all the rage and everyone was “dipping” the ends of their tresses into a bold new color? Well, it’s back, and better than ever. Bella Thorne recently added pink to the bottom portion of her elongated red tresses, showing off how the trend has advanced and improved. Instead of just a quick submersion in a solid color, the hues are precise and multi-dimensional, with a combination of light, medium and dark pinks woven together for a truly awesome effect. We’re hoping Dip-Dye, Part Deux really takes off—we’re predicting tons of fabulous color moves on the horizon!

Mario Model Moves

Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide was on the scene at The Wit Hotel this morning to watch the semi-finals of the Mario Tricoci Hair Salons & Day Spas’ “Mario Make Me A Model” contest. After an open call for models brought in 300 potential contestants, the list was pared down to 40 semi-finalists, who strutted their stuff on the runway during this morning’s event. (Check out our Instagram page @sophisticateshairstyleguide to see video clips!) In the end, 7 finalists were chosen (pictured above, with mane master Mario Tricoci). All will be put through model and fitness training over the course of the next nine weeks, and receive a beauty makeover from Mario Tricoci Hair Salons & Day Spas. Five finalists will then compete in a fashion show on August 26th, ending with one final winner.

Here are a few snaps from the event…

Better Hair

better hair 1

better hair 3We’re fans of Kérastase Paris, so when Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide was invited to check out their re-launched Fusio-Dose Hair Lab Treatment—and their very cool brand-new Hair & Scalp Profiler Diagnostic Camera, we knew we couldn’t miss the chance.

We met the Kérastase Paris pros at Salon Buzz in Chicago’s Gold Coast, and they walked us through the process…

It all starts with the Hair & Scalp Profiler Camera, which is attached to a smartphone. It zooms in on the hair fiber up to 600 times, then allows the stylist to take a photo, which is uploaded into a diagnostic program where it undergoes a full fiber analysis. So we could follow along, the smartphone was attached to a tablet which showed us what our hair pro was doing.

better hair 5After finding out which area of improvement we were most interested in for our hair: radiance, nourishment, strength or density, the analysis began. We were interested in a boost of volume, so the diameter of the hair fiber was measured and compared, giving us a “very fine” verdict. Damage was also assessed (none—yay!) and the shine factor, which was horribly lacking (oh no!).

better hair 6

Next came the recommendation for the Fusio-Dose Hair Lab Treatment. This is a “beauty shot” treatment that consists of a primary treatment, along with a booster for a secondary treatment. The primary treatments cover the four improvement areas noted above, while the five secondary boosters include nourishment, manageability, radiance, density and reinforcing. Based on our hair analysis, it was recommended we have a primary radiance treatment for more shine, and a density booster for extra volume. The treatment takes just five minutes, and you’ll see the results for up to four weeks.

In addition to the in-salon treatment, the analysis also recommended Kérastase Paris products to use at home. Combined with the Fusio-Dose treatment, over time our hair will become shinier and thicker. We can hardly wait!

If you’re thinking about making a major mane change, but just aren’t sure, you could take a cue from Pretty Little Liars‘ Shay Mitchell. Normally a very dark brunette, Shay took a walk on the lighter side for the iHeart Radio awards by testing out a blonde hue via a gorgeous wig. “Trying to figure out if blondes really do have more fun…” she wrote on Instagram. She looks good, right?

Kendall’s Kut

Kendall Jenner debuted a long, wavy bob on her Snapchat, having cut off multiple inches. Shares the model, “I wasn’t nervous about the haircut, really, because I know my hair grows so fast. But after the stylist chopped it off and I felt it, for a second I was like, ‘Ahh, wait! Take it back!’ But, I actually really love it now. I’ve had the same length forever, so it’s a nice change and perfect for summer.”

A modern version of the beehive hairdro, styled by hairdresser Ann Bray and dedicated to Margaret Vinci Heldt , the original creator of the beehive, at 2010’s America’s Beauty Show.

Margaret Vinci Heldt of Elmhurst, IL, passed away on June 10, 2016, at age 98—leaving her forever mark on the hairdressing world in a big way.

Vinci Heldt is credited for creating the famous beehive hairstyle back in the 1960s. She was a natural and talented competitor who won the National Coiffure Championship in 1954, and served as educator and mentor to scores of Chicago-area hairsylists during her career, including Mario Tricoci, John Amico and Marty Rizzo. She also owned Margaret Vinci Coiffures on Chicago’s posh Michigan Avenue.

Two legends…the amazing Vidal Sassoon and Margaret Vinci Heldt.

Two legends…the amazing Vidal Sassoon and Margaret Vinci Heldt.

The hairdresser was active with her professional association, Cosmetologists Chicago, for almost 80 years. “Margaret was a member and inspiration to Cosmetologists Chicago since 1938,” says Paul Dykstra, CEO, America’s Beauty Show by Cosmetologists Chicago. “We dedicated our 2010 America’s Beauty Show to Margaret—a hair stylist, fashion innovator, salon owner, educator, champion, member and dear, dear friend to many. We will continue to honor her for her love and devotion to her association, profession and everyone who knew her.”

To say this dynamic spirit will be missed is an understatement. We do know one thing however: there is some serious fabulous hair happening right now inspired by Vinci Heldt’s original hairdressing creations!
