flood coverRoughly 110,000 homes; 281,000 people and 7,300 businesses were in the wake of the floods that affected Louisiana. In response to the wide-spread devastation caused, The Salon and Spa Relief Fund is on the scene, collecting donations and offering grants to help salon and spa owners and their employees who were affected to help rebuild their lives and their businesses.

“We started The Salon and Spa Relief Fund because of our first hand experience in Katrina,” said Debra Neill Baker, Chairman of Neill Corporation and one of the directors of The Salon and Spa Relief Fund. “So many people we cared about were affected and we wanted to do something. Once you have been in a disaster, you have a heightened awareness of its impact. We wanted to help. And we found that many other people felt the same way. This fund has become a centralized place for our industry to help those who need it.” Since its inception in 2005, The Salon and Spa Relief Fund has awarded 43 grants totaling almost $184,000 to those affected by Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike and the Nashville floods of 2009.

If you or someone you know was affected by the Louisiana floods, or the tornadoes recently affecting the midwest, a grant application is available online. You an also make a donation online. The place for both is: www.salonandsparelieffund.org

5 Steps To Ariana!

NEW YORK, NY - AUGUST 28: Ariana Grande attends the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards at Madison Square Garden on August 28, 2016 in New York City. (Photo by Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images)

Did you catch the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards last night? Ariana Grande and her trademark ponytail were there in fabulous, full-volume force, complete with new-this-summer fringe. The singer’s stylist, Aaron Light did the ‘do, and you can, too….

1. Start by applying a small amount of Matrix Style Link Blow Out Big Queen Cream to damp hair. Blow-dry bangs with a 1-inch round brush, then place them in a 1-inch roller to cool and keep the shape. TIP: If you don’t have rollers, wrap the hair around your finger and secure with a clip or bobby pin. Blow-dry the rest of the hair so it is silky and smooth.

2. Brush hair into a high pony tail on the top of the head and secure with a hook bungee. This will create a tight pony tail with no slippage. For thick hair, use two bungees.

3. Spread a dime-size amount of Matrix Style Link Shape Switcher onto fingertips and brush hands backward from the hairline to the pony tail to smooth any bumps and secure flyaways. Repeat with a barbering brush for extra smoothness.

4. Wrap a small piece of hair around the bungee and secure with a bobby pin. Spray pony tail with Matrix Style Link Mineral Rough Me Up Salt Infused Spray for texture. Remove roller from bangs and smooth as desired

5. To finish the look, take a few random pieces from the pony tail and using a crimping iron, crimp the hair from top to bottom. TIP: Dust finger tips with Matrix Style Link Mineral Booster Texture Booster and lightly run through sections before crimping for extra texture and volume.

5 Steps To Celebrity Hair

5 steps to celebrity hair 1

Matrix Artistic Director and Celebrity Stylist Nick Stenson styled actress Kate Mara this past week for her appearance on the Late Late Show with James Corden. Here are the five steps that can help you recreate Kate’s fresh and fun tress look…

5 steps to celebrity hair 2STEP ONE
Apply Matrix Style Link Blow Out Big Queen evenly through damp hair. When blow-drying, use a round brush vertically to add texture to the hair.

STEP TWO
Once dry, apply a small amount of Matrix Style Link Texture Builder the into hair for grip. On the right side, starting at the hair line, create a braid to the curve of the head; pin the tail of the braid under the nape of the head.

STEP THREE
Repeat the braid on the opposite side, leaving small pieces of hair out between the braid.

STEP FOUR
Take a 1-inch Marcel iron and wrap random sections of hair around it, leaving the ends loose. Once the hair is curled, apply a small amount of Matrix Style Link Mineral Booster to loosen curls and add texture.

STEP FIVE
Finish by tucking the hair behind the ear and spray with Matrix Style Link Style Fixer Finishing Spray.

Updo How-To

Special event coming up? Then here’s your special hairstyle! Designer Ashley O’Dell of Michael’s Salon and Spa in Centerville, OH, shares the step-by-step for this classic and chic upsweep…

updo how to one←Step One
Prep hair with a volumizing mousse and blow-dry with a round brush. Section off crown and bang area; curl vertically around sides and back with a 1 ¼” marcel iron, spraying each section with a heat-styling spray as you go (O’Dell used Aquage Working Spray). Continue to the crown, curling hair horizontally in a downward motion and pinning each curl in place with a double prong clip.

updo how to twoStep Two→
Let curls cool completely before unclipping. Relax hair with a polishing brush, following the brush with your hand to maintain a smooth wave.

updo how to threeStep Three
With the crown sectioned off, rolled under, and clipped out of the way, make “C” shape partings above each ear and clip sides out of the way. Maintain “C” shape partings for all sections, facing downward through the back sections. This conceals your part lines as you pull the hair into place.

updo how to fourStep Four
Starting on the right side, pull back the first section of hair loosely and secure in the center of the back with a bobby pin. Continue pulling sections of hair, alternating from right to left, until you reach the bottom, pinning each as you go.

updo how to fiveStep Five
Pull each side section back loosely and pin into the folds of the previous sections. Unclip crown and tease section for volume. Gently smooth surface, roll ends under, and pin just above the previously pinned hair, manipulating with your fingers to lay in a swooped way. Lightly tease bang area to help hold the hair together and smooth back, allowing the hair to bend and flow with the waves created by the curling iron. Pin in place and mist with a finishing spray for a firm hold. Add flowers or jeweled hair accessories if desired.

Nude Hair?!

You’ve heard about warm and cool hair, but what about when the tone is somewhere in the middle, like Cara Delevingne? That’s what colorist Jack Howard, of Paul Edmonds salon in the UK calls “nude” hair. “There’s an even amount of both warm and cool tones, which cancel each other out to create a neutral shade; think mousey but expensive,” shares the L’Oreal Professionnel UK Colour Spokesperson. “To create this look, several blonde shades are blended together to create that overall ‘nude’ finish. It’s becoming an increasingly popular look as it works with all complexions – neutral shades work great on blonde hair and it’s a low maintenance service.” We like. A lot.

Styling Like Selena

styling like selena

Selena Gomez is on tour and tearing up the style scene with her on-stage fashions and toss-my-hair-like-so silhouettes. Pantene Celebrity Stylist Marissa Marino is styling Pantene Brand Ambassador Selena Gomez’s hair for one of summer’s hottest concerts. Marino’s biggest secret to maintaining Selena’s perfect, natural waves is simple: keep hair strong and healthy to help prevent frizz when traveling to various cities with different climates, and help prevent and repair damage from the excessive use of styling tools.

Here are a few tips from Marino on how you can create your own strong, beautiful, frizz-free waves just like Selena’s.

>>“Wash and condition hair with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to help nourish curls without weighing them down.”

>>“I also always tell Selena to air dry her hair whenever possible, as that reduces that amount of heat I’m using on her hair and protects it from getting damaged—and I highly recommend doing this on a regular basis.”

 >>“Once hair is dry, apply Pantene Pro-V’s Smooth Anti-Humidity Airspray as a finishing spray to help prevent frizz and secure beautiful curls.”

10 Tips For Great Hair

10 tips for great hair

Time for the 411! Super stylist Daniel Raboh shares his 10 need-to-know tips for great hair…

TIP 1
After shampoo and conditioning, be sure to rinse your hair thoroughly. Left-over product dulls hair.

TIP 2
Distributing conditioner through your hair with a wide-toothed comb will leave your hair shiny and tangle-free.

TIP 3
Apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends. Conditioning your roots will weigh your hair down.

TIP 4
If your hair is really dry, deep-condition at home. Apply conditioner to clean, damp hair, slip on a plastic cap and let your hair absorb the conditioner for 30 minutes before rinsing.

TIP 5
Rubbing your hair with a towel when it’s wet can ruffle the cuticle and cause tangles, so gently squeeze out excess water.

TIP 6
Before blow-drying, protect your hair with a styling product such as a conditioning milk, cream or serum.

TIP 7
Move your blow-dryer from roots to ends to avoid frizz and shredding your hair cuticles.

TIP 8
For smooth results, brush as you blow-dry in the same direction. It will prevent your cuticle from roughing up.

TIP 9
Make sure your hair is thoroughly dry before styling with a flat iron or curling iron to avoid frizz.

TIP 10
For a fuller look, part or style your hair in the opposite direction.

On opening night, Matrix artists lit the fuse with a world-class hair fashion production that Matrix VP and General Manager Paul Schiraldi said was designed to “light up the world with our imagination.” That it did, and for the next three days, the passion and creativity continued to burn brightly, from general sessions to hands-on classes, trending looks and learning about business building. Matrix, a leading professional haircolor and haircare company in the United States, left no doubt in our minds why they are so beloved by the industry, thanks to their commitment to the development of the salon professional, offering a progressive, creative, fun way to engage in the world of hair! On the last day we heard the salon pros all commenting on how much they loved being part of the Matrix family and hated to leave, but they parted with the tools and ideas to build their salons, delight their clients and reignite their creativity.
