HOW-TO: Disco Texture, Baby!

5 STEPS TO TAKE YOU TO FUNKY TOWN!

disco-texture

What shines brighter than a disco ball? Your holiday hairstyle, obviously! Make a celebratory splash with this hair look by runway stylist and L’anza Healing Haircare ambassador Jorge Luis, who created the look for Son Jung Wan’s NYFW Spring/Summer 2017 show. Luis was inspired by Studio 54 in the ‘70s, and created the mane look to replicate the iconic disco era. “It was all about texture, volume and a sense of fun,” he shares. “My go-to inspirations were Donna Summer, Jerry Hall and Bo Derek.”

Here’s how to recreate these playful, statement-seeking styles at home…

1–Create a middle part with a rattail comb. Grab large sections of hair close to each side of the part and French braid until halfway through hair, then secure. Repeat on the other side.

2–
French braid remaining hair on both sides and secure.

3–For remaining hair underneath, wrap small to medium sections of hair (in random directions) tightly around a chopstick; place the wrapped hair in-between flat iron plates for a minute, shifting the iron position as needed to apply heat to all the hair. Release the chopstick and comb resulting curls out.

disco-texture4–Spray curls with L’anza Healing Style Dry Texture Spray to add volume and hold, followed by L’anza Color Illuminator Hair Brightening Spray for shine.

5–Finish with humidity resistant finishing spray to give firm, natural-looking hold.

But in case you’re still not sure about the hue for your lips, check out her smokey eye look created with blue eyeshadow. Now that, you can do, right?

6 Steps To Fab Tri-Color Nails

tri-color-nails

tri-color-nailsSpice up your digits with a shimmery nail look from nail artist Rose Velez-Miggins. As the lead artist of Cesar Galindo’s NYFW 2016 show, Velez-Miggins created a gorgeous “tri-color fade” design with official nail sponsor, Dermelect.

Here’s the step-by-step for how you can nab this nail look….

1.  Prep nails with nail cleanser.

2.  Apply a strengthening base coat.

3.  Apply two coats of color #1. For the green look, Dermelect Fearless; for the pink look, Head Turner, for the gold look, Nobody’s Fool. Allow to dry.

4.  Sponge color #2 on the tip, and color #3 in one of the corners by the cuticle so you have a tri-color effect; repeat as necessary for color saturation. For the green look: Verdue and Heirloom; for the pink look: Fant-A-Sea and Mellow Drama; for the gold look: Hold Me and Luminous.
**Pro Tip: Any three colors that complement each other can be used for a tri-color sponge effect.

5.  Apply a manicure-extending top coat.

6.  Finish with cuticle oil.

3 Steps To Witney-Perfect Hair

NEW YORK, NY - OCTOBER 18: Dancer Witney Carson attends the Skin Cancer Foundation Media Awards Gala at the Mandarin Oriental New York on October 18, 2016. (Photo by Ben Gabbe/Getty Images)

Even though the Dancing With The Stars finale is tonight, you can still keep a little of the show’s style with you, in the form of Witney Carson’s very chic sleek, but volume-filled red-carpet style. Created by Matrix Artistic Director Daniel Roldan, “The look was a collaboration between Witney and I based on what she was wearing,” the hairstylist says. “I also feel like she has a very iconic look, a la Brigitte Bardot. A gorgeous beauty! So this was a bit ‘60s-inspired as well.”

Here’s how you can copy Witney’s mane moves in three simple steps!

1.  Apply Matrix Style Link Blowout Skinny Queen to the front of hair to smooth down and add shine. Blow-dry hair upside-down to create volume. Flip hair back and create a side part.

2.  Distribute a volumizing mousse throughout dry hair, starting three inches away from scalp and working down to the ends of the hair (Roldan used Matrix Oils Wonders Volume Rose Mousse). Flat-iron hair, curving a touch along the ends. (Make sure the mousse dries in the hair before applying heat from the flat iron!)

3.  Lightly backcomb the crown area for extra volume, and spray a finishing spray to lock in smoothness.

6 Quick Steps To A Chic Holiday Look

steps-chic-holiday-look

With the holidays just around the corner, it’s time to take beauty into your own hands. What better way to celebrate this cheerful time than with a sexy updo, designed by celebrity hairstylist John Blaine, also the creator of the haircare line, Vine de la Vie. This holiday bouffant look is the perfect combination of elegance and festivity, sprinkled with a playful vibe we know you love as much as we do. Blaine shares how you can create this style right at home:

1.  On wet hair, apply equal parts of Vin d’OR Leave-In Elixir and a hydrating serum, concentrating product on root area.

2.  Blow-dry hair with a round brush; you can pick the size of the brush according to your hair length. This style was done with a small/medium brush to put in more curl.

3.  Use a 1-inch curling iron to curl sections of hair, then pin curls at root to cool.

4.  After hair has cooled, remove pins and brush out curls.

5.  Make a side part and use a rat-tail comb to backcomb the top and crown area.

6.  Pump hydrating serum into hands and pull hair into a high pony and secure. Spray with your favorite hairspray to set.

Sophisticate’s Exclusive: A Chat With MTV’s Sweet/Vicious Star Eliza Bennett!

sweet-vicious

British-born Eliza Bennett is the one to watch this season on MTV’s new primetime dramedy, Sweet/Vicious. Premiering tonight, Eliza plays Jules Thomas, a sorority girl who is avenging sexual assault victims on campus. “She is pretty sweet and wholesome, and something awful happens to her,” Eliza told Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide in an exclusive interview. “To sort of channel her frustration and injustice about sexual assault, she becomes a vigilante at night.”

Eliza might play an action-packed hero on-screen, but her character Jules rocks glam extensions. “My character has really long, wavy, blonde hair, so I have hair extensions for the show,” the British actress revealed to us. “It’s curled every day to create Jules’ loose body wave, and my hair is teased a lot to blend with the clip-in extensions.”

Want to read more about Eliza’s off-screen beauty moves? Pick up a February 2017 issue of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide (on sale now!) and don’t forget to tune in to Sweet/Vicious tonight on MTV!

10 Tips For At-Home Cool Colors

tips-home-cool-colors

He’s the man responsible for Hayley Williams of Paramore’s jaw-dropping hues—so if there’s anyone you can trust for some color tips, it’s him! Brian O’Connor, Creative Director of the hair dye line goodDYEyoung, tells you his expert tips on how to properly color your hair at home without the “Oops!” Whether you’re going bold or keeping it natural, here are a few things to know…

1  If you’re deciding between pink and blue, and will do the other color a month later, always go with the lighter color first. It will fade out and you can put the darker color over it. Red, blue and green tend to be harder to get out of the hair and harder to cover up.

2  Plan on it taking 2-3 hours—especially if doing a double process.

3  Be patient!! It may take a few weeks to achieve what you really want.

4  Remember what you learned in kindergarten: follow the instructions.

5  A timer is your best friend…set one!

6  Avoid wearing anything you don’t want to ruin; it can get messy quick. Designate certain towels for the job—don’t use the good ones.

7  Careful of over-processing when bleaching.

8  Rinse your hair out really, really well.

9  Never use conditioner before applying color to pre-lightened hair. GoodDYEyoung has conditioning ingredients in the formula; it is your conditioner.

10  If you’re bold color curious, but not committed, try a clip-in color extension first.

Have any great haircolors you achieved at home? Show us! You can tag us on Instagram or send us a photo on Facebook!
