To keep the vibrancy of your haircolor, be sure to keep strands conditioned. The drier the ends, the duller the color looks.

Miss Universe

We know you don’t win Miss Universe for good hair, but if you did… then Iris Mittenaere was definitely the right person to win the title this past weekend.

The Miss France contestant went all out pageant glam with her long hair and big curls–the perfect accompaniment to that gorgeous sparkling crown.

Congrats to Iris!

The way you blow-dry affects the vibrancy of your hair. It’s the tension from your head to the brush while blowing your hair straight that makes it shiny.

Not Just For Colds…

While you may be taking your daily dose of Vitamin C to keep that winter cold at bay, did you know it’s also helping your hair? “Vitamin C is important for the production of an essential protein called collagen, which makes up about one-third of your body, including skin, ligaments and hair,” reveal the mane experts at Viviscal. You can find out a whole lot more about how to make sure your hair is growing as fast as it can in our April/May issue of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide, on sale next week! The folks at Viviscal have so much more to tell you….

5 Tips For Achieving A “Wet Hair” Look

We’ve seen everyone from Kim Kardashian to Hayden Panettiere to Penelope Cruz rock a “wet hair” look—a slicked-back, wet-inspired style that looks sexy, sultry and like you just stepped out of the ocean, only looking a lot more glamourous. Kevin.Murphy Style.Master Ali Batista breaks down a step-by-step for getting this high-fashion hair at home. What are you waiting for?

1.  Prep with an anti-frizz product: “Most of these wet-looking styles actually start on dry hair and require a smooth, yet textured finish. A favorite product of mine to achieve this is a smooth, anti-frizz treatment, which assists in frizz control while allowing your natural texture to shine through.”

2.  Texture is key: “If you weren’t born with textured hair, you can create texture with the right product. My go-to texturizer is Kevin.Murphy Hair.Resort.Spray. It uses natural Mica particles to give your locks a lived-in beachy look without exposing your hair to those harmful salts.”

3.  Create volume near your hairline only: “A big element to nailing the wet hair look is making sure your style has some volume near the front hairline and the crown area, with flatness at the back and sides. Volumizing mousse offers volume and hold for all hair types.”

4.  Choose your preferred level of hold: “The hold factor of your style is what will help it transition from day into night. Using a medium-hold crème will add shine to the hair, so your wet look is chic enough for daytime but strong enough to carry you into the evening. For a bolder wet finish, a firm holding gel will give you a high shine finish without making the hair look plastered or creating a flaky finish.”

5.  Finish with a high-shine spray: “Kevin.Murphy Session.Spray has hydrolyzed silk in the formulation, which adds a shiny sleek finish to your hairstyles. The shiny sleek finish combined with a strong hold factor is exactly what is needed.”

3 Steps To Aly’s Glam Waves

alys glam waves

Matrix Celebrity Hairstylist George Papanikolas recently styled Olympic Gold-medal gymnast Aly Reisman for a red-carpet event. “Aly spends so much time in the gym and training with her hair pulled back,” shares Papanikolas about how the look came about. “We wanted to really pull out all the stops and went for glam Hollywood waves. She already has amazing hair and I really wanted to maximize its volume and body.”

Here’s how you can steal Aly’s look!

  1. On damp hair, apply a volumizing mousse and root powder. Blow-dry with a round brush for a smooth but full finish. To try: Matrix Style Link Volume Builder Mousse combined with Height Riser Volumizing Powder.
  2. Once completely dry, take a 1-inch curling iron and create smooth waves throughout. These waves are always a classic look on the red carpet!
  3. Once the head is fully curled, finger-brush hair lightly, then apply a flexible hairspray to ensure hold with movement.

Roots!

Think you may be in need of a little color touch-up on those roots? Then you probably haven’t seen Miley Cyrus! The singer/actress is in the process of growing out her blonde locks and returning to her natural brunette hue. She posted a photo on Instagram that proves even stars can have a rough growing-out period, captioning the photo “goin back 2 muah rootz” with the hashtags #LAZY and #growingphase. Gotta love Miley for keeping it real!

Nina’s Hot New Bob!

Nina Dobrev stepped out at the XXX: Return of Xander Cage premiere in London debuting a very hot bob, considerably shorter than we’re used to seeing the ex Vampire Diaries star wearing. The cut was done by super stylist Riawna Capri, co-owner of Nine Zero One salon. Shares Capri, “Nina’s been waiting to cut her hair short for years, but couldn’t due to projects. She’s so excited to have short hair again!”

We love it!

Makeover!

Redken Artist George Garcia gave Julia, a 25-year-old haircolor virgin, a brand-new look. Julia had always wanted to make a haircolor change, but never took the time to get herself into a salon. She was ready to take a risk–and Garcia went all-in. The hairdresser used Redken City Beats, a professional haircolor line, to transform her look. Julia was thrilled, and we think she looks great! Check it out…

makeover 1BEFORE: Julia had never colored her hair before, saying her mother always told her how much she liked Julia’s natural hue and she she should never change it.

makeover 2THECONSULTATION: Julia and Redken Artist George Garcia talk about Julia’s options and what she might like to try. Julia is open for anything!

makeover 3THE PROCESS: Garcia started by lightening Julia’s dark tresses, in preparation for more color…

makeover 4THE COLORS! Garcia went with shades of red, a complete surprise for Julia!

makeover 5AFTER: Julia’s gorgeous reveal shows a shorter, bouncier length and a gorgeous blend of her natural hue and fiery red and burgundy shades. Julia did a face-to-face screen call with her mom to show off her new color. Her mom’s reaction? “You look like a star!”

SAVE YOUR CURLS!

winter curls

Feeling like your curls aren’t especially happy or perky these days? It could be the winter season is wreaking a little havoc. Explains Dwan White, Director of Global Marketing & Product Development for Aunt Jackie’s Curls and Coils, “Hair tends to become drier during the winter months and can sometimes experience breakage because it comes in contact with unforgiving materials, such as wool sweaters, scarves and coats.” How to fix it? “Make sure your hair is completely dry before going out into the cold weather, and use super-hydrating product that will help keep your curls moisturized all day.” Aunt Jackie’s Flaxseed Recipes Half & Half Hydrating Silkening Hair Milk is a great option!

Lily’s Burnished Brunette

Were you loving Lily Collin’s red-carpet look for the Golden Globes as much as we were? Besides the absolutely stunning gown and flawless scarlet lips, the star’s hair looked gorgeous! Super colorist Denis De Souza is responsible for imbuing Lily’s mane with a luscious shade, giving her brunette up-do just the right amount of burnished luster and dimension.

Souza used Joico LumiShine professional haircolor to add very fine highlights around the face, softening regrowth and adding illumination. He then glossed over the entire mane with a demi-permanent color, and followed with a K-Pak Color Therapy Luster Lock Shine and Repair Treatment for amazing shine.

Just gorgeous!

red-carpet-alert

The 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards are tonight, and we couldn’t be more excited to kick this award season into high gear–we are totally ready for some serious red-carpet style. And, of course, there will be tons of great looks on-stage as well, especially since Miss Golden Globe is actually tripled this year, with sisters Sistine Rose, Scarlet Rose and Sophia Rose, daughters of Sylvester Stallone, doing the honors (that’s them above, with host Jimmy Fallon). We’re already melting the butter for the popcorn…
