6 Steps To Felicity’s Red Carpet Look

felicity red carpet look

Felicity Jones looked gorgeous on Oscars red carpet with her floaty dress and pretty partial upsweep, designed by hairdresser Cervando Maldonado. The mane pro shares how he created this look, step by step…

1.       I began with damp hair and applied Matrix Style Link Volume Builder and Matrix Style Link Mineral Airy Builder Dry Texture Foam to Felicity’s roots, then ran it through the ends of her hair to build volume and texture. I brushed it through with the T3 Paddle Brush. Expert tip: Cocktailing both the mousse and foam creates a varied texture.

2.       Before I began blow drying, I lightly sprayed Matrix Biolage R.A.W. Replenish Oil Mist through the ends to create a beautiful shine. After rough-drying the hair, I clipped it and, starting in the back, blow-dried it section by section using a 2.5” barrel brush.

3.       After the hair was completely round-brushed and dried, I used T3 Volumizing Hot Rollers Luxe. Leaving the bangs out, I set the hair with four hot rollers: one on each side, the top of the head and one in the back.

4.       I pulled the rollers out when cooled, and lightly sprayed Matrix Style Link Texture Builder Finishing Spray through the roots and ends of the hair. I then brushed the hair through with a vent brush.

5.       I pulled her hair into a half-up, half-down look by taking the sides of the hair and pulling them up behind the head, securing with a couple of bobby pins.

6.       Once done with pinning the hair, I finished everything off with one last spray of volume hairspray.

Hair 101: Biotin And Why You Need It!

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand hair health–you just need Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide, and the hair pros at Viviscal. You’ve heard of “biotin,” but what is it, and why does your hair need it?

Biotin (Vitamin B7) is a foundation of hair growth. One of its main functions is to help maintain healthy hair cells, and those cells help make sure your follicles are producing hair in the first place. In addition, biotin helps to minimize hair breakage by adding elasticity to your hair strands.

Your body does not produce biotin on its own. Although most people meet their biotin requirement with their diet, it’s always recommended to supplement with biotin in your shampoo, feeding your hair strands from the inside and out. One to try: Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Shampoo, which contains biotin.

And now you know!

Valentine Like Rihanna

LOS ANGELES, CA - FEBRUARY 12: Singer Rihanna attends The 59th GRAMMY Awards at STAPLES Center on February 12, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Steve Granitz/WireImage)

Rihanna looked amazing at the Grammy Awards this past Sunday night, and we loved her volume-filled mane with pretty swirls of curls–the perfect look for a Valentine date night. The star’s stylist Yusef, who created the look for RiRi, shares, “This was one of the unusual moments when Rihanna wasn’t performing at an award show, so we wanted to be a little laid-back with her look. We wanted it to be super playful, carefree and youthful. Once she picked her dress, we decided to go for long, flowing, big waves–voluminous, just like her ball gown. We decided to color her hair that day, just a bit, to play off the orange of the ball gown.”

While you don’t have to do the orange bit, we did think you might want to copy the curl bit. Here’s Yusef’s tips for how can copy Rihanna’s tress look…

1.  Apply Matrix Style Link Volume Builder Mousse to damp hair. Blow-dry using a diffuser attachment to maintain natural texture.

2.  Once hair is dry, use a curling wand to enhance and perfect waves.

3.  Flat-iron roots down to the top of the ear to nix flyaways and to create a bit of contrast.

4.  Tousle curls with Matrix Style Link Airy Builder Dry Texturizing Foam for separation and texture.

5.  Complete the look with Matrix Style Link Volume Fixer Hairspray for hold with movement.

The 5 Best Texture Looks From The Grammys

The Grammy Awards were last night and, as usual, the red carpet was packed with glam looks, hot styles and gorgeous faces. Texture seemed to be a big trend, with several stars sporting a little movement in their hair in one way or another. Here are five of our favorites….

1.  KATY PERRY

2.  TORI KELLY

3.  MAREN MORRIS

4.  PARIS JACKSON

5.  HEIDI KLUM

We’re still smack in the middle of award show season, and tonight we get the Grammy Awards–one of our favorites due to the uber-cool red-carpet fashions and mane moves.

Who are we excited to see tonight? Kelly Clarkson, Celine Dion, Halsey, Taraji P. Henson, Paris Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Faith Hill, Katharine McPhee, and Gina Rodriguez are all presenting.

Adele, Kelsea Ballerini, Andra Day, Cynthia Erivo, Tori Kelly, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Little Big Town, Demi Lovato, Maren Morris, Katy Perry and Carrie Underwood are all scheduled to perform.

Whew! We. Cannot. Wait.

Styling Like Lady Gaga!

lady gaga 1

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a week since Lady Gaga rocked the Super Bowl halftime show! We’re still buzzing about it…and her fabulous mane looks! Lucky for us, the mane man responsible for both her upsweep and her flowing length, Frederic Aspiras, was happy to share with us how you can steal the star’s gorgeous looks. “For her performance, we had to ensure her flowing hair tendrils stayed flowing and in place,” he shared, adding that layering hair products is key to a look that lasts.

lady gaga 2

Lady Gaga and stylist Frederic Aspiras.

Here’s the step-by-step…

1.  On towel-dried hair, apply Matrix Style Link Mineral Airy Builder Dry Texture Foam from root to tips.

2.  Section hair and blow-dry using a large, boar-bristle brush. Blow-dry the sides of hair away from the face, the back sections downward flipping out the ends, and the top of head forward then rounding it up. To help protect hair against heat, use a heat protectant like Matrix Style Link Heat Buffer.

3.  Curl the top and sides of the head using a medium barrel curling iron. Curl the back of the head using a large-barrel curling iron. Pin the curls with clips as you go, allowing the curls to cool for about 10 minutes.

4.  Remove clips and gently brush through hair with a large paddle brush. Spray on Matrix Style Link Texture Builder Messy Finish Spray and piece out curls.

5.  For the upsweep, wrap hair up into a French twist knot, leaving the ends out; secure with pins.

6.  Whether down or up, finish the look with Matrix Style Link Style Fixer Finishing Hairspray.

The Correct Color

amanda jayko

Sometimes your color doesn’t grow out quite right–or maybe it just wasn’t perfect to begin with. Luckily there are pros like stylist Amanda Jayko of jcp salon in Algonquin, IL, who is also an Artistic Educator with Matrix Professional Haircare & Color, who can come to your rescue. Jayko transformed an uneven color into a beautiful buttery, vanilla blonde creation. Absolutely stunning!

Pucker Up! 5 Tips For Perfect Lips

pucker up

Celebrity make-up artist Claire Alexandra Doyle (she’s worked with stars like Anna Faris and Rachael Leigh Cook) shares five good tips for keeping your lips in pucker-ready shape during the drying season, aka winter!

ONE:
Exfoliate

A gentle lip scrub will not only exfoliate your lips of those little flakes, but it can also hydrate them and help prep them to absorb your lip balm. Look for a lip scrub that’s made specifically for lips and is sugar based, which is more softening than salt or nut-based scrubs typically made for the face or body.

TWO:
Moisturize

Even when you’re not wearing lip colors, it’s important to keep your lips moisturized. I really love the results I see from argan oil-based lip care products; they absorb quickly and they don’t leave a thick or sticky residue. I recommend Moroccan Magic’s Peppermint Eucalyptus Lip BalmApply your lip balm to your lips after brushing your teeth before bedtime.

THREE:
Choose Well

Give your lips a little color that also has some added moisturizing benefits. Choose lip colors that are that are creamier in texture and have hydrating ingredients like shea butter and/or jojoba oil.

FOUR:
Invest

While everyone loves the trend in matte and long-wearing lip products, our lips need an effective and hydrating option for makeup removal. Invest in a good makeup remover that is conditioning and alcohol free, like one that is micellar water based.

FIVE:
Drink

Did you know that symptoms of dehydration can show in your lips and make them dry? Remember to drink water to help you stay hydrated. Bored with plain old water? I make a pitcher of water with cut up strawberries and fresh mint leaves or grapefruit and cucumber, fruits that not only add flavor, but contain over 90% water themselves!

Condition, Condition, Condition

Healthy hair is gorgeous hair, and one way to keep your locks in top condition is–conditioner! “The general rule of thumb to follow is to condition your hair every time it’s wet,” shares the mane experts at Viviscal. “Even on days when you don’t wash your hair, a quick conditioning will keep your hair moisturized.” (P.S. Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Conditioner is a good one to try, offering up Biotin, Keratin, Zinc and more goodies for your hair and scalp.)

Claire Hair!

The Crown actress Claire Foy looked positively royal–and very chic–for a recent awards show, thanks to a pretty chignon styled by Jillian Halouska. “Claire’s Valentino dress was very lovely and intricate,” shares Halouska. “I wanted to edge it up a little and give the hair an editorial, runway feel. Claire is always down to try new styles and I had been planning with her makeup artist and stylist for about a week. The final look was an effortless, young and chic chignon.” Here’s how to steal her style…

1.  On damp hair, apply Matrix Style Link Blowout Skinny Queen, create a center part and blow dry.

2.  Part out front pieces on each side before the ear. Using the blow dryer and a round brush, twist each piece back.

3.  Using Matrix Style Link Over Achiever, muss up the rest of the hair to create texture and dimension. Pull into a low pony tail leaving the front two pieces out.

4.  Separate pony into three pieces and coil them around each other. Sculpt the pieces into a chignon to your liking, pinning as you go.

5.  Half-tuck the front behind the ears and loosely pin a few pieces into the chignon. Lightly mist Matrix Biolage R.A.W. Replenish Oil-Mist all over for a nice, healthy sheen.
