6 Steps To Felicity’s Red Carpet Look

felicity red carpet look

Felicity Jones looked gorgeous on Oscars red carpet with her floaty dress and pretty partial upsweep, designed by hairdresser Cervando Maldonado. The mane pro shares how he created this look, step by step…

1.       I began with damp hair and applied Matrix Style Link Volume Builder and Matrix Style Link Mineral Airy Builder Dry Texture Foam to Felicity’s roots, then ran it through the ends of her hair to build volume and texture. I brushed it through with the T3 Paddle Brush. Expert tip: Cocktailing both the mousse and foam creates a varied texture.

2.       Before I began blow drying, I lightly sprayed Matrix Biolage R.A.W. Replenish Oil Mist through the ends to create a beautiful shine. After rough-drying the hair, I clipped it and, starting in the back, blow-dried it section by section using a 2.5” barrel brush.

3.       After the hair was completely round-brushed and dried, I used T3 Volumizing Hot Rollers Luxe. Leaving the bangs out, I set the hair with four hot rollers: one on each side, the top of the head and one in the back.

4.       I pulled the rollers out when cooled, and lightly sprayed Matrix Style Link Texture Builder Finishing Spray through the roots and ends of the hair. I then brushed the hair through with a vent brush.

5.       I pulled her hair into a half-up, half-down look by taking the sides of the hair and pulling them up behind the head, securing with a couple of bobby pins.

6.       Once done with pinning the hair, I finished everything off with one last spray of volume hairspray.

To maintain your mane the day after shampooing, sleep with your hair in a light, loose ponytail. Tackle any greasiness with a light sprinkle of talcum powder.

4 Great Short Hair Oscar Looks

Blot damp hair gently—never rub it back and forth with a towel because it roughs up the hair cuticle and causes frizz.

When creating spirals with a curling iron, the trick to keeping the shape of the curls is to use your fingers to style. Don’t brush the curls!

Remember when Carly Rae Jepsen was known for her blunt brunette bangs? We really liked that look of hers, but we’re positively in love with her blonde pixie snip. BRB–need to speed-dial our salon…

Treat your hair like it’s an accessory. Ideally, you should switch up your style every two seasons: spring/summer and autumn/winter.

We can hardly wait to watch HBO’s new series tonight, Big Little Lies. Yes, the stars will be out in force—styling it up in California in this seven-episode mini-series starrring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz.

We can hardly wait to see the style change-ups and the drama that centers on these moms who live in a pretty pricey seaside town. Yeah, we love drama and miss our Desperate Housewives 🙂

To keep hair healthy and styled, it should be trimmed at least every four to six weeks. This is especially crucial when wearing fringe, layers or a combination of the two.

Hair 101: Biotin And Why You Need It!

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand hair health–you just need Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide, and the hair pros at Viviscal. You’ve heard of “biotin,” but what is it, and why does your hair need it?

Biotin (Vitamin B7) is a foundation of hair growth. One of its main functions is to help maintain healthy hair cells, and those cells help make sure your follicles are producing hair in the first place. In addition, biotin helps to minimize hair breakage by adding elasticity to your hair strands.

Your body does not produce biotin on its own. Although most people meet their biotin requirement with their diet, it’s always recommended to supplement with biotin in your shampoo, feeding your hair strands from the inside and out. One to try: Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Shampoo, which contains biotin.

And now you know!

Valentine Like Rihanna

LOS ANGELES, CA - FEBRUARY 12: Singer Rihanna attends The 59th GRAMMY Awards at STAPLES Center on February 12, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Steve Granitz/WireImage)

Rihanna looked amazing at the Grammy Awards this past Sunday night, and we loved her volume-filled mane with pretty swirls of curls–the perfect look for a Valentine date night. The star’s stylist Yusef, who created the look for RiRi, shares, “This was one of the unusual moments when Rihanna wasn’t performing at an award show, so we wanted to be a little laid-back with her look. We wanted it to be super playful, carefree and youthful. Once she picked her dress, we decided to go for long, flowing, big waves–voluminous, just like her ball gown. We decided to color her hair that day, just a bit, to play off the orange of the ball gown.”

While you don’t have to do the orange bit, we did think you might want to copy the curl bit. Here’s Yusef’s tips for how can copy Rihanna’s tress look…

1.  Apply Matrix Style Link Volume Builder Mousse to damp hair. Blow-dry using a diffuser attachment to maintain natural texture.

2.  Once hair is dry, use a curling wand to enhance and perfect waves.

3.  Flat-iron roots down to the top of the ear to nix flyaways and to create a bit of contrast.

4.  Tousle curls with Matrix Style Link Airy Builder Dry Texturizing Foam for separation and texture.

5.  Complete the look with Matrix Style Link Volume Fixer Hairspray for hold with movement.

We’re still smack in the middle of award show season, and tonight we get the Grammy Awards–one of our favorites due to the uber-cool red-carpet fashions and mane moves.

Who are we excited to see tonight? Kelly Clarkson, Celine Dion, Halsey, Taraji P. Henson, Paris Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Faith Hill, Katharine McPhee, and Gina Rodriguez are all presenting.

Adele, Kelsea Ballerini, Andra Day, Cynthia Erivo, Tori Kelly, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Little Big Town, Demi Lovato, Maren Morris, Katy Perry and Carrie Underwood are all scheduled to perform.

Whew! We. Cannot. Wait.

It is vital to rinse hair thoroughly to remove all residue; anything left behind will only dry hair out and cause unnecessary frizz.
