Back Off The Backcombing!

Backcombing, or teasing, is a popular trick to add volume to otherwise lifeless and/or thin strands. While this is a quick and effective technique, the process can also be very damaging to your precious mane! That’s why the hair experts at Viviscal came up with three equally effective alternatives to backcombing that you’ve got to try!

  1. Try Out A Thickening Serum: Daily use of a thickening serum can help you achieve fuller hair naturally so teasing will no longer be needed!
  2. Use Hair Nutrients: Vitamins can help dramatically change to health of your hair. For example: Vitamin C improves elasticity, Vitamin B7 strengthens and Niacin helps repair.
  3. Try Hair Fibers: Less hassle that weaves, adding volumizing fibers to wear you need it with instantly give the appearance of a fuller coif.

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2017

NEW YORK, NEW YORK New York Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2017 collections were quite the melding of some of fashion’s most creatively inspiring people. But what we kept our eye on was the hair, and what looks and products hair designers were creating and using.

From Aveda’s Global Creative Director, Antoinette Beenders, who designed a ripple-hair look for Tome, to Scott Cunha for Matrix, who used the fab Style Link product line on celebrity fashion model Ireland Baldwin. Aveda Guest Artist Frank Rizzieri created a sleek look for the Tibi show, while L’Anza Healing Haircare runway stylist Jorge Luis went for more undone wet looks for the God Save Queens models.

Macadamia Professional lead stylist Eiji Yamane designed a perfectly Parisian look for the Zang Toi show. Jorge Luis, for L’Anza Healing Haircare, kept looks beautifully textured for the Urban Zen collection. Luis also was busy working the Michelle Helene collection, echoing a global vibe to complement fashions.

All in all, the looks were stunning and the fashions amazing.

America’s Beauty Show – 2017

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS—This year’s larger-than-life America’s Beauty Show (ABS) by Cosmetologists Chicago—an association of 14,256 salon professionals—hosted 82,109 gate admissions including salon owners, cosmetologists, colorists, nail techs, barbers, estheticians, exhibitor persons, models and media in Chicago’s beautiful lakefront facility, McCormick Place, the largest such center in the United States! Featuring 410 exhibits (375 domestic and 35 foreign), we knew we were in for quite the few days just checking and reporting on all the wonderful new and exciting happenings in our industry!

Not one but two! Yes, there were two ABS runways that featured incomparable artists like Chrystofer Benson, Nicholas French, Guy Tang, Sam Villa and more industry icons whose work has appeared on the pages of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide over the years. On Monday, several hundred haircolorists immersed themselves in the half-day ColorFEST 2017 event featuring major color companies and colorists who presented the new color trends for the pros to bring back to their salons for their color-loving customers!

Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide and sister publication Sophisticate’s Black Hair were two of the media sponsors for The Beauty Changes Lives Experience on Sunday evening, held at Chicago’s world-famous Art Institute in the Modern Wing. Matrix co-founders Arnold and Sydell Miller received the 2017 Legacy Award at the fundraising event that helps support NextGen talent. Attendees received beautiful product-filled gift bags enhanced by the current issue of Sophisticate’s!

“Listen. Support. Connect.” is the required Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault training class for Illinois cosmetology license renewals, and was taken by thousands of salon pros and owners. The class taught the pros how to recognize symptoms of DV/SA and how to provide resources for their clients. From the latest in hair/makeup/skin/nails to doing good in the community through the industry—we must say, this was one amazing beauty show we will never forget!

Debra’s Makeup How-To

Recreate Will & Grace star Debra Messing’s bronze goddess look! Celebrity makeup artist Jeannia Robinette broke down Debra’s entire beauty look explaining, “I wanted to create a bronze, golden goddess look for Debra. We went for a modern, classy beauty look with all the focus on the eyes. I really wanted the eyes to pop and keep everything else a bit more natural.” Copy Debra’s look in these 10 easy steps…

  1. To give Debra the bronzed glow we were after, I applied Star Bronzer “#2 “to her cheeks. Next I added a tiny bit of Lancôme Dual Finish Highlighter in “2-Luminous Gold” to the top of the cheekbone to enhance her glow.
  2. I finished off the cheeks with the Lancôme Blush Subtil Palette in “New Nude.”
  3. I applied the copper shadow from the Lancôme Color Design 5-Pan Eyeshadow Palette in “Kissed by Gold 102” all over the eyelid to start. Next I added the eggplant shade from the Lancôme Color Design 5-Pan Eyeshadow Palette in “603 Olive Soleil” to the crease of the eyelid.
  4. Under the eye, I used the Lancôme Drama Liqui-Pencil in “Chantilly” and blended it out with my finger for a really soft, light gold look.
  5. I wanted the lashes to be super bold and black so we layered on Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara to the top and bottom lashes.
  6. For the brows, I used Lancôme Sourcils Styler in “Brun.”
  7. First I lightly scrubbed her lips to exfoliate and then I prepped then with Lancôme Absolue Precious Cells Nourishing Cells Lip Balm. Debra and I wanted to create a really nude lip, to go with the copper eye so we used Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge in “Timide #237.” I also lined her lips with Lancôme Le Lipstique in “Bronzelle.”

Get Your Tresses Fall Ready!

It doesn’t matter if you’re mourning over the end of summer or ecstatic to snuggle up all Fall, it’s time to get your hair ready for the season change. With fall and winter’s drier and colder climate, your tresses are going to need a little extra TLC. Here are six easy things to make sure you’re adding to your hair care routine to keep your locks looking amazing all season long, according to the tress pros at Viviscal!

  1. Moisturize…We’re talking deep conditioners, hair masques and even a good ole’ DIY treatment. Get the girls together and love on your locks!
  2. Skip The Heat…Give your heated styling tools a break or make sure to take extra precautions to protect your strands.
  3. Cool Down Your Color…Trade in your sun-kissed look for a deeper hue that’ll be season appropriate and easier to maintain.
  4. Volumize!… Heat causes frizz, but cold can leave strands limp and flat. This is the time to whip our volumizing products.
  5. Beware Of Breakage… Be careful with the accessories you use to keep excess tugging and pulling to a minimum.
  6. Do A Detox… Pull out all the salt, chlorine and sunscreen that’s latched on to your tresses all summer with a good detox.

Emmy’s Romantic Glam

One of our favorite mane looks on the red carpet last night was Jessica Biel, who wore her long tresses in a half upsweep with volume. Long, loose curls flowing over her shoulder and the pompadour-inspired crown height combined to create a glamourous look that was not only romantic in nature, but downright pretty. Well done! (And here’s hoping this vibe continues with awards season in early 2018–we love us some pretty red carpet!)
