Resolve to take better care of your tresses this year. First step: regular conditioning treatments.

Must-Have Winter Curls!

Winter. The outdoor weather and hot indoor air really takes it’s toll on our manes. But now, thanks to Aunt Jackie’s Curls And Coils, those with curly hair can get some great hydrating moisture! “The key is moisture,” says Crystal Styles, Assistant Director of Marketing at Aunt Jackie’s Curls and Coils and a Certified Trichologist. “When your hair is drier it will be more likely to attract static. Using moisture-replenishing products like Aunt Jackie’s Coconut Crème Recipes Coco Wash Coconut Milk Conditioning Cleanser along with Coco Repair Coconut Crème Deep Conditioner will help greatly reduce static.”

For more on keeping those waves, curls and spirals in perfect condition, pick up our new issue and read all about it!

Friday Fun…

We’ll miss seeing the red hair…

Kentucky Fried Chicken announced today that it has selected Reba McEntire to play the role of Colonel Harland Sanders in a series of ads beginning January 28. (That’s Reba above, along with her Colonel identity).

“I grew up with Kentucky Fried Chicken. It’s part of my story, and I’m so excited to now be part of theirs,” shares Reba. “I’ve held a lot of roles in my life – sort of like the Colonel himself – but this is certainly the most unique one yet.”

For quick curls with minimal heat, try hot rollers. They heat up quickly—and you can finish your makeup while your curls set.

Fergie! Fergie! Fergie!

Fergalicious, indeed. Matrix announced that Ms. Fergie herself is their new SOCOLOR Cult Icon. “We are so excited to be collaborating with Fergie,” shares Paul Schiraldi, VP and General Manager, Matrix. “She loves taking risks with beauty and fashion trends and is always looking for inspirational, edgy ways to  express herself.”

Fergie will be hosting the opening celebration at Matrix Destination 2018 this weekend, a four-day event for hairdressers with best-in-class education with Matrix artists and educators like Tabatha Coffey, George Papanikolas and Nicholas French.

Ginger Goodness

According to the mane masters at Viviscal, ginger root is considered a superfood—meaning it’s rich in nutrients. While it is not a cure for hair loss, ginger can help boost your haircare routine to benefit your coifs overall health. Try massaging a combination of fresh, grated ginger root and coconut oil gently into the scalp.

For extra-smooth style, flat-iron hair from the base of the scalp all the way to the ends.

Details, Details

How do you turn a sort-of fishtail braid into something a little more spectacular? It’s in the details! In this case, hairstylist Adir Abergel twisted silver thread around strands in Saiorse Ronan’s hair for a little sparkle power. He also wrapped a length of hair around the base of the braid to cover the elastic holding it. The result is chic and pretty and all-around fabulous.

Are your strands brittle? Your water may be to blame! Hard water can damage the hair cuticle and leave deposits on every strand.

Healthy Hair Eating Habits

Getting healthier, stronger and longer hair never tasted so good! The experts at Viviscal suggest trying these eight yummy foods to boost your tresses glam power!

  • Carrots—contains a multitude of hair-helping vitamins and minerals like Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Phosphorous and Potassium.
  • Oysters—are rich in Zinc. A lack in Zinc can cause hair loss and excessive dandruff.
  • Salmon—and other oily fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help moisturize and add shine.
  • Greek Yogurt—is a good source of protein, which helps strands stay strong.
  • Oranges—and other citrus fruits like grapefruits and tangerines are an amazing source of vitamin C, which aids in hair structure and elasticity.

Beauty Changes Lives

The Beauty Changes Lives Foundation announced that the 2018 Legacy Award will posthumously honor Horst Rechelbacher (above), founder of Aveda and Intelligent Nutrients, on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at The Beauty Changes Lives Experience co-hosted by America’s Beauty Show and Pivot Point International.

With a mission to elevate, educate and empower, Beauty Changes Lives is uniting the industry and building awareness of the extraordinary career opportunities in the beauty, wellness and massage therapy industries. Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide is a media sponsor for this very worthwhile cause.

The event at the iconic Art Institute of Chicago will include an intimate Legacy Award dinner followed by a Runway Fashion Show that showcases sponsored NextGen teams and their mentors. Rechelbacher’s partner in life and business, Kiran Stordalen, and his daughter, Nicole Thomas-Rechelbacher, will accept the award honoring his contributions to the industry.

All proceeds benefit The Beauty Changes Lives Foundation, which has raised more than $5M in scholarships for aspiring beauty and wellness professionals.  “Our fund-raising Beauty Changes Lives Experience allows us all to pay forward by supporting the next generations in beauty,” notes Lynelle Lynch, president of the non-profit Beauty Changes Lives Foundation. “Honoring Horst is a privilege for the Foundation and in doing so we also honor the thousands of industry members who were touched by Horst, by his life’s work and his talent for encouraging success in others.”
