Thinking of wearing a wig? Be prepared to care for it as you would your own hair, including washing, styling and giving it time under the dryer.

3 Fab Braided Styles

Pick one, any one. They’re all cute! And thanks to Matrix, you’ve got the how-to right here…

1: The Braided Headband

Get the look:

  1. Determine natural fall of hair or the direction you want the braid to go in (left to right or right to left). Create a vertical ear-to-ear parting about 2 inches away from your hairline across the top of head. Secure the remaining hair out of the way with a clip.
  2. Take a one-inch section directly above the ear and divide into three strand. Begin French braid technique by adding a small amount of hair from in front of section each time you cross the strands.
  3. Travel across the top of the head until reaching opposite ear, braid 2 inches down and secure with an elastic. This will create a braid that will lie flat to the head. Pin any shorter pieces with a bobby pin.

You can leave the braid loose behind your ear— maybe even throw a “hair ring” or two in! If your work environment is not hair jewelry friendly, pin the braid under the hair by crossing two bobby pins like a “X”.  For smooth and shiny hair, finish with a few spritzes of Raw Replenishing Oil Mist or for tousled and beachy hair, reach for Style Link Rough Me Up Sea-Salt Spray and mist through the ends.

2: Low-Loose Side Braid

Get the look:

  1. Prep hair with two pumps of Style Link Mineral Booster and a golf ball sized amount of Style Link Airy Builder on dry or damp hair, comb through. Create a diagonal section off a natural parting from temporal area to nape of neck. Don’t stress too much with this one— the messier the sexier.
  2. Start a traditional French braiding technique near hairline without using too much tension. As you work your way down, begin to raise your arms slightly higher if you can, this will create softness and may cause a few pieces to fall out around the nape. Alternate the middle pieces over and under to create inconsistency. Secure with an elastic.

3: Boxer Braids

Get the look:

  1. Apply a dollop of Air Dry Chill BOHO through damp hair. Create a part down the center of your hair using the end of a comb. Clip one side out of the way.
  2. Take a small triangular section at the front of the hairline about 1 inch wide. A crucial point to remember when creating boxer braids is to weave each piece under, rather than over (just the opposite of a traditional French braid) to give it the visible “pop-out” effect.
  3. Repeat the pattern of crossing right section under middle strand, and then the left section under the middle strand. Keep adding more hair (about 1/2 to 3/4 inch) from the section every time you weave a new section.
  4. Continue the pattern down the back of the head, remembering to keep tension so the braid is tight. Secure at the bottom with an elastic and repeat on opposite side. Smooth flyaway hairs.

If your strands are lacking shine, try drinking more water. Staying hydrated and eating a nutritious diet is just as important as our favorite products for hair health.

Edgy Detail

Slip into a new style with a little sass. Here, hairdresser Jamie Challender, of JCPenney Salon in Okemos, MI, styled a short cut with shorter sides and back. Hair on top is waved and accompanied by a medium-sized braid on one side. Super chic!

Work a light, leave-in conditioner through tresses before heading outdoors for a day of fun under the sun.

Spring Chic

Saoirse Ronan looked fresh and chic on the red carpet this week, wearing her blonde bob neatly tucked behind the ears. Stylist Adir Abergel created a smooth surface on the star’s blunt cut style, while still maintaining a respectable amount of volume. The whole look reminds us that simple can be fabulous, too.

Never underestimate the power of dry shampoo! It’s great for a no-shampoo day, but also works wonders as a volumizer on clean hair.

When it’s still damp after washing, loosely braid your hair into one or two plaits. When dry, release for natural-looking beachy waves.

Stayin’ Alive

’70s glam never seems to disappear completely, and why should it, when it looks this good? Celebrity hairstylist Danielle Priano created this gorgeous mane look on Martha Hunt, and was inspired by the Disco era. The side volume is awesome, as is the texture. This is one trend we hope stays alive!

Always use covered elastic bands to prevent hair breakage.

Cute Bob Alert!

Singer Dua Lipa showed off her too-cute bob cut on Instagram and we heart, adore and are coveting it. Not quite blunt, the few subtle layers thrown in there give it a little flick of texture and make it totally swoon-worthy. We can see dressing this up, sleeking it out, adding curls and doing oh-so-many pretty profiles with this cut.

If you’re thinking of bangs, keep them long and wispy for longer hairstyles. They’re easy to grow out if you change your mind!

It’s spring so let’s have some fun! We love these three looks from our friends at Metropolis Hairdressing, in the United Kingdom, making our weekend even more fierce! “I wanted to create a collection that was universally appealing,” says Ceri Cushen, Colour Director. “The aim was to craft styles that would excite clients while still inspiring our hairdressing peers. The feel for the shoot came from George Michael’s iconic “Fast Love” video and the way it combined dark gothic elements with an edge of fantasy, while still being utterly beautiful to watch. I loved his use of colour and wanted to recreate that in my collection.” That she did!

Applause applause!

1  BLONDE WITH DARK BROWN PEEK-A-BOO Love this choppy, layered look that fringes over the forehead—don’t you?

2  GREEN GREEN! Chop, chop—creative sparks are flying with this Emerald-City vibe.

3  IT’S ABOUT THE HAIRCOLOR Precision cutting makes this edgy look one for our daring fashion-forward sisters!

What an honor! Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide was invited to co-judge, along with Pureology Serious Colour Care Artistic Ambassador Ruth Roche, the first-ever Mario Tricoci Rising Beauty Star Contest this past week at the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre in Arlington Heights, IL. Three catgegories were judged: Color, Cut and Updo. We will feature the event in our upcoming issue of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide, so stay tuned!

And to all the beauty students who entered—you all won…you are amazingly talented and what a future you have!

To prevent breakage, don’t rub your hair with a dry towel. Instead, blot the hair and twist lengths up in the towel.

Curly Cues

“Every day is another journey with this hair.”
–Emmy Rossum

Natural curly girl Emmy showed off her fabulous spirals on Instagram, with a nod to all those gorgeous mane curves. Texture is a popular trend right now, so if you, too, enjoy curls, go ahead and let them unfurl! Just remember to keep them moisturized (Aunt Jackie’s Curls & Coils Quench Moisture Intensive Leave-In Conditioner is a good product must-have) so they always look fresh and pretty.
