Weekend Hair

Curls are always a good idea on the weekend–whether you’re heading to the shopping mall, the library, brunch with the girls or date night with the boy. Hair pro Stephanie Borud, of Salon Roxy in Valrico, FL, shares how she created this look, using All-Nutrient products…

“On wet hair, I applied All-Nutrient Straight+ Smoothing Cream all over, and a little Mousse+ Foaming Volumizer to the roots for volume. After blow-drying, I applied a light coat of Raspbody Freeze Hairspray to each section before curling the hair with a 1.5″ curling iron. I followed with a couple pumps of Shine+ Serum, emulsified inm y hands, and finger-combed through the curls.”

4 Reasons Your Blonde Hair Could Be Turning Yellow

Pro Advice From The Mane Experts At Matrix!

1. Natural Underlying Pigment
If you have blonde hair: You are familiar with the term gloss or glaze (aka the step 2 of your coloring service). When hair is lightened, an underlining pigment of pale yellow exposed in the hair that’s often “controlled” with a gloss or in-salon treatment. If you are stretching your time in between visits, you may find that your hair starts to turn a yellow tone. This is likely because you are overdue for a color treatment.

What you can do in the meantime, aside from incorporating purple shampoo into your cleansing routine, be sure to use a shampoo for color treated hair like Biolage R.A.W. Color Care to help maintain your gloss between services.

If you have white hair: Sometimes when hair loses melanin (i.e pigment) and turns white or gray, there’s still a residual tone of yellow left in the hair. This can leave hair looking dull and drab. Purple shampoo can help over time but for a lasting impact, request silver highlights or gloss in the salon.

2. The Environment Can Cause Damage to Hair Color
Pollution, smoke, chlorine from swimming can all contribute to yellow tones in the hair. Wear hats to prevent sun damage and protect your hair from environmental pollution. If you are a swimmer, opt for a swim cap. Be mindful that even your shower H2o can create mineral deposits of high iron. Install a water-filtering shower head to ban chemicals out of your water.

3. Hair Color Damage Caused by Styling Products and Tools
Shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, waxes, aerosols, etc. can leave a yellowish deposit on the hair. Even applying too much heat from a hot tool can create a yellowish tone. Always use a heat protectant spray when styling like Style Link Heat Buffer or primer like Biolage R.A.W. heat Styling Primer and invest in good hot tools that won’t damage your hair during use.

To balance this type of yellow pigment, first use a clarifying shampoo to remove yellow tone and then graduate to purple shampoo.

4. Health & Diet
Oils from the scalp, medication, diet and health conditions can contribute to yellow tinge in white or blonde hair. If you have any concern about your health or diet and how it can be affecting your hair, be sure to reach out to a doctor.

Purple Shampoo? If you have blonde, silver or white hair that tends to get yellow, purple shampoo can be your new BFF. Purple shampoo is purple colored shampoo that distributes purple pigment to neutralize brassy, yellow tones. Purple is used because, if you take a look at the color wheel, it is the direct opposite color of yellow. This means purple and yellow cancels one another out. Therefore, when using purple pigment on brassy, yellow tones it color corrects your hair’s hue restoring it to its former bright, cooler color.

If you can’t seem to keep your hair bright, purple shampoo offers a good solution to keep unwanted warmth under wraps. Matrix Total Results SOSILVER can help brighten up your blonde woes. Alternate using it with color-safe shampoos—or mix them together for less violet deposit.

Start by using once a week and build up if needed. If you start to notice a purple tone in your hair, put the purple shampoo down! Opt for a clarifying shampoo to remove the tone and keep your purple shampoo routine to once a week or less.

Wet Look, Without The Wet

Judging by the red carpets we’ve been seeing lately, the wet look appears to be trending. If you’re not sure you can get into it, here’s a gorgeous alternative, worn by Kristen Bell and designed by hairstylist Dimitri Giannetos. The style still has that “slicked-back” vibe, but with tons of crown volume and not so much of the “wet” finish. It’s gorgeous, right? Right!

How To: Demi’s Billboard Awards Look

Demi Lovato stunned on the red carpet at last night’s Billboard Music Awards, with a slicked-back wet look that showed off the singer’s easy texture. Here’s the step by step, straight from stylist Cesar Ramierz, who styled up Demi’s mane look for the night…

1. On towel-dried hair, I evenly applied BioSilk Silk Therapy Beach Texture Spray for body and texture.

2. With a flat brush and blow-drier, I directed all the hair back and away from the face for controlled volume and to create a tousled slick-back look.

3. Once hair was dried, I layered BioSilk Glazing Gel in small sections from the bottom to the top of the head and brushed each section back. While applying the gel,  I set the hair with its natural texture in clips to create the ultimate wave.

4. To set the look, I attached the diffuser to my dryer and dried on low heat.

5. Once dried and set, I removed the clips and finished the look with BioSilk Silk Therapy Finishing Spray.

Amber Is L’Oréal

Today, Amber Heard was announced as the newest L’Oréal Paris Global Spokesperson!

I have always loved the fun of beauty and the power of transformation,” says Amber. “To become a spokesperson for this dynamic, world-loved beauty brand that’s been telling women we’re worth it since before I was born, and to join the L’Oréal Paris family of changemakers is such an honor. I feel like these women–my fellow ambassadors–represent a voice, a power, a movement, an opinion.”

One of a new generation of actresses rewriting the script when it comes to having a voice in the world, the energy Amber Heard brings to her philanthropy, to her advocacy and to her performances make her a powerful ambassador for L’Oréal Paris as we take ‘Because I’m Worth It’ beauty into 2018,” says Pierre-Emmanuel Angeloglou, L’Oréal Paris Global President.

Over the years I’ve always thought to not just be an actor, but to use my voice as a platform for good to make the world a slightly, slightly better place and empower women the best that I can,” says the star.

Katy’s Angel Hair

Katy Perry was an absolute angel at the Met Gala this week, and Nine Zero One Salon’s Rick Henry, expert color pro and stylist, matched her blonde hair hue to her white and gold wings and beaded gold skirt using Joico Blonde Life. Here’s how he did it…

  • Color came first. In this case, Blonde Life Lightening Powder with 20 Vol LumiShine Developer on the roots. Rick let that process for 35 minutes.
  • Next was a mix of Blonde Life Lightening Powder with 10 Vol LumiShine Developer to bring up the intensity of Katy’s ends. That was applied and processed for the final ten minutes.
  • The finish was a toner of 1Ž2 10SB and Clear.
  • Now it was onto the styling: After towel-drying Katy’s short pixie cut, Rick applied Heat Set Blowout Perfecting Crème to safeguard hair from heat damage.
  • Once hair was dry, it was on to Joico Beach Shake, which provided glam texture, satiny hydration, and that perfectly “imperfect” separation to create the piece-y “rock angel” mega hit.
