If you wear a ponytail every day, be sure the hair is not pulled back too tight. Too much tension, too often, can lead to breakage.

Face Forward: Almost Nude

It’s almost the weekend! Do you have your makeup look figured out yet? Here’s your weekly inspiration…

ALLISON WILLIAMS
How to look natural, but with a little more oomph. Makeup artist Patrick Ta created a nude lip with a hint of pink, a nude face with a hint of glow and a nude eyelid with a hint of color. To bring the look a little more into finished territory, he topped it off with darke brows, a few coats of mascara on upper and lower lashes and a lightly smudged dark eyeliner.

Those with a heart/diamond face shape should draw attention to eyes and cheekbones with brow-grazing fringe or sideswept bangs.

One Great Look: Bubblegum Ombré

Hair by Amber Kelley
Hair Artistry, Kansas City, MO

Pink is just a happy color. It’s impossible to be sad while rocking bubblegum hair, and with hair this pretty why would you want to be? The beautiful balayage expertly blends with the soft white, making this a joyful look.

For women with a square face shape, any cut that softens your angular jaw and forehead is great. Try face-framing layers and highly texturized styles.

Floral Fantasy

Make it a reality, as did Evan Rachel Wood, who accented her chignon with a side of flowers. One large peony surrounded by baby’s breath and smaller posy-like flowers makes for a colorful hair accessory with a romantically beautiful quality. The soft, face-framing tendrils are a nice touch, too.

Consider your favorite wardrobe choices when selecting a long-term shade. It’s a lot easier to change your mane shade than your entire closet!

Rose Gold Melt

Florida colorist Jen Goodison created this gorgeous metallic-looking color on long locks. “Rose gold is one of my most requested colors this year!” shared the pro on Insta. Loving the expert way the color melts from a lilac to a rose to a pale peach. It’s all so pretty!

When applying products to damp hair, try combing the product through your hair to make sure it is being distributed evenly.

The Power Of The Plait

Sometimes all you need to get through the weekend is the perfect hairstyle. The expert hair pros at JCPenney Salon and The Salon By InStyle inside JCPenney have created such a style: the plaited upsweep. From the front, sides and back, it’s got everything you need/want/love in a gorgeous lock look. Wear it for brunch, for date night and for yourself. And wear it when you go buy the new issue of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide, which not only has this look, but a bunch of others from JCPenney Salon and other great salons across the globe, and some really pretty star hair, too.

If your natural color is brunette, add a few face-framing, coppery highlights to mimic the natural brightness in children’s hair. Ask your stylist to use pigment rather than bleach.

CHICAGO’S TRICOCI’S DOING GOOD!

Well we have to hand it to them. They could just sit around and revel in their hair and beauty success in our industry, but they don’t. No, legendary hairstylist and beauty salon owner Mario Tricoci, who has been in the industry over 40 years, has decided to open a salon at Chicago’s Misericordia—a community which serves persons with mild-to-profound developmental disabilities. Mario and wife/business partner Cheryl Tricoci (pictured at right) opened the Misericordia Hair Salon which will be staffed by volunteer professional hairstylists and students from Tricoci University at no cost to the Misericordia residents. Now the residents can experience the joy of a great shampoo, cut and/or styling.

Mario stated, “First and foremost, I am a stylist and have so much more to share with this magnificent industry, an industry which has given our family so much. Being part of Misericordia’s family is key to our charitable and civic leadership in the Chicagoland area.” Many of Misericordia’s residents are physically challenged and a trip to a salon can be difficult.

Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide applauds Mario and Cheryl for this wonderful happening! Can you hear us clapping?

Take a look at some of the images from the dedication event…

Silver Surfer

While some go for the gold, Francine Makshanoff of JCPenney Salon in Moreno Valley, CA, knows it’s all about silver. This ashy gray color is done with a balayage technique and is fresh, hip and oh-so flattering on so many skin tones.

It’s almost the weekend! Do you have your makeup look figured out yet? Here’s your weekly inspiration…

OLIVIA WILDE

Makeup artist Hung Vanngo shows off Olivia’s icy-green eyes with gorgeous eyeshadow work using, “See-quins Glam Glitter Eyeshadow in Copperazzi and Scandalust Eyeshadow Palette,” reveals the pro. One Great Look: Up, Up, And Away

Hair by Lorena Bello
Di_Bello Hair Salon, Buford, GA

Nothing says pick-me-up quite like an amazing updo. While at first glance this retro-chic sweeping style is ultra classic, the fun pops of color underneath have something entirely different to say.

Looking for a delicious new scent that’s also good for the hair? Try raw coconut oil as a way to moisturize strands naturally with a yummy smell.

Pony Up!

Although actress Joey King shaved her head earlier this year for a new movie role, we’re heading back to this particular look where she ruled the ponytail universe with this partial upsweep. Long locks are gathered at the top of the crown, the base of the tail is teased a bit and tresses waterfall down. It’s a look for any season, and any occasion–as long as you have the attitude and the hair flip down.

Never apply conditioner directly to your scalp. Concentrate the application of conditioner to the tips of your hair strands, and then rinse your hair thoroughly with cold water to lock in the moisture.

Black Rainbows

That’s what Orlando/Los Angeles stylist Neal Malek dubbed this stunning haircolor vibe. The pro colorist added purple, red, green, yellow, blue, orange and pink to naturally black hair, which is expertly shown off with multi-level braids.

If your hair is wavy, smooth and separate wet strands with a wide-tooth comb, then spritz a silicone-based shine-enhancing spray from ends to roots. Dry hair using a blow-dryer with a tapered nozzle to direct air down the hair shaft and seal the cuticle.

FALL FOR CURLS!

The clocks have changed and we’re officially in deep fall mode. The thought of fall conjures up comfy layered clothing and finally letting hair down from being tied up in summer ponytails, braids and buns. This season, natural texture and curly locks have swept back on to the scene. “The major bonus in the current trend of curls is there is no right or wrong way to rock the look! Curls can be lazy and loose, tight and voluminous, or even better…a mix of textures for a more dimensional finish,” says Andrew Carruthers, Education Director for Sam Villa, who offers these two gorgeous looks for the season. “Curls are multi-faceted,” Carruthers continues. “As are the people who wear them—so don’t be afraid to explore new techniques and combinations of textures to celebrate the fact that fall is for curls!” So right!

It’s vital to rinse hair thoroughly after shampooing and conditioning. Anything left behind can dry out hair and cause unnecessary frizz.
