Need a quick hair fix? Look in your pantry for olive or coconut oil—both are great moisturizing agents.

Cool Color

Can’t decide between blonde and brunette? Take a page from singer Rachel Platten’s color book and go for both. The star starts with a brunette base, then adds in an ombre dark blonde throughout, ending with bolder blonde panels framing the face. It’s the best of both worlds!

Twice As Nice

What happens when two powerhouse salon pros out of Australia get together? Double the beauty. Michael Kelly, Colourist and Education Director Edwards & Co. did the ombre effect with a darker brunette base and lighter caramel ends, while Natalie Anne of Natalie Anne Salon in Australia created the super-pumped volume with twirls of giant curls. Twice as nice!

ROCK SOME MIXED TEXTURE!

Layers of different textures and mixing fun prints had a strong presence on the runways, which of course will have a major influence on how we play with hair in 2019. “There will be more artificial texture created with irons, mixed media almost, with braids and twists heightening the effect,” explains Anna Peters, Sam Villa ArTeam.

The Sam Villa Signature Series Professional Texturizing Iron is ideal for creating variations in texture and volume for these styles. Peters mixes smooth polished strands that sit upon matte ripples of texture, with compact plaits mixed in with full, relaxed, more deconstructed plaits.

We thought another way to get this look (if you don’t have long hair) would be a fun hair piece to try for the holidays and have styled up at your favorite hair salon!

ELLEN POMPEO
When hair and makeup come together just right, you get this. Grey’s Anatomy actress Ellen wears her perfectly sculpted waves with blonde highlights, and a fresh by makeup vibe by beauty artist Hung Vanngo. Straight Away

We love a good beachy wave as much as the next gal, but we also swoon when we see a super-sleek, straight mane move. Victoria Justice does the style vibe right with her dark locks that feather into a chestnut hue, all done up with a straight center part. Don’t forget the glossing serum, ladies!

Greta Wagner of The Beauty Lounge in Watertown, CT, dubbed this look “saffron,” although we just call it gorgeous. Slightly darker roots waterfall in precision waves down to lighter ends, all with a slow-burn, fiery finish.

A SALUTE TO PANTONE BEAUTY COLOR OF THE YEAR!

Everyone here at Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide gets so excited when the color pros at Pantone announce the color of the year—and this past week was no different. The new color for 2019 will be Living Coral. What does that mean to our industry? We checked with pros Aveda Global Artistic Directors Janell Geason and Ian Michael Black who developed their own haircolor and makeup looks based off the 2019 color and posted them on Instagram. Here is a recap of what they said..here you go, in time to ring in the new year!

Ian Michael Black
“Every year, hair colorists wait in anticipation of what Pantone will release as the Color of the Year. This year I was very excited to see the bright, yet quietly gentle color, Living Coral, which translates beautifully to hair. It’s a lovely copper with a pink under tone that is warm, inviting and light-hearted. Once announced, I immediately got to work to create Living Coral for the hair. Working with Aveda and its fully customizable hair color system, hair colorists are able to instantly create Living Coral for hair color, and offer it to guests so we can start 2019 with a playful, uplifting color.”

Janell Geason
“I always love creating a new lip and it’s fun to incorporate a new color scheme when Pantone releases its Color of The Year. I’m loving Living Coral because it’s uplifting, light-hearted and embodies a spirit of revelry which matches my own feelings about makeup. This also reflects to the people that love our Feed My Lips line which is cruelty-free, naturally-derived and all about beautiful color. In general, shades of coral work for all skin tones. I’ve created my own twist on Living Coral–one more subtle and one very bold.” For bold color, Janell used Aveda Feed My Lips Lip Liner in Spiced Peach and then layered Aveda Feed My Lips Lipstick in Cana and Papaya. For the softer color, Janell used Aveda Feed My Lips Lip Liner in Spiced Peach and Aveda Nourish-Mint Rehydrating Lip Glaze in Sunkissed Melon.

Ribbon Envy

Poppy Delevingne shows off a cute way to wear your next ponytail: with double ribbons. Hair is smoothed to the top back of crown, where it’s secured in a straight ponytail. A black ribbon (velvet or satin, your choice!) is tied in a bow around the top, then another ribbon is tied a few inches from the bottom. A segmented ponytail! Too cute…
