Considering a darker haircolor to be in tune with the season? Do it the right way with some expert advice:

  • Brunette Trend “You’re going to find boldness form actually colors that are great for your skin tone,” shares master colorist Kim Vo. “The big example is that people used to think the lighter you go, the younger you look. The boldness now is the darker you go, the younger you look.”
  • The New Bronde “Brunette is the new blonde!” Vo says. “The brunettes in the past were dated, dark chocolate browns, but now we’re talking about bronde color, that’s a brown-blonde combination.”
  • Complimentary Colors “The perfect haircolor, to me, is a color that’s going to complement skin tone,” reveals stylist Anthony Morrison. “When I look at somebody’s skin tone, I determine whether the color should be light or dark, warm or cool and whether they should have dimensional color or just [little pieces] to break up what they already have.
  • Warm Or Cool? Eye color can also play a part in your haircolor change decision. “I look for that little ring of color around the pupil,” Morrison explains. “If they have hazel eyes or green eyes, they can wear colors that are a little bit cooler, but if they have brown eyes, I wan to go with something a little bit warmer.”

    1. Mirabel says:

I’m a brunette, and the brown has a dash of (natural) blonde mixed in. I want to get streaks in my hair of blue or red or something like that. I have blue-grey-green eyes. What do you suggest?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Suzanne Bond says:

Depending on the vibrancy you are desiring for these colors, they may require a double process: Lightening the natural hair first, then applying the color. If you are seeking a more natural or rich red, that can be accomplished with a single process color. As blue is more difficult to achieve and to keep, I would recommend going with a red first to see if this is a look you want to keep! Good luck!

    2. Heather D says:

I color my hair at home. My hair is naturally a dark brown. I have a lot of gray hair. I try to color and get the gray out which most times I am successful but my hair is soooo dark from about half way down my hair to tips. My hair is very long down below bra line. What can I do to lighten up my ends without damaging my hair. Also what is the best type of hair coloring to use on gray hair. Thanks.

      • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

        Hi Heather:

The best thing at this point is to select photos/styles you love from our magazine (often times we tell the colorist product used) and show your local beauty pro!

      • Renee says:

I think Kristen Stewart has the most beautiful thick tousled brown hair. She looks amazing with the different hairstyles she wears. I would like to know how I could achieve a hair color like her.I would like for you to publish her in your magazine.I have been a fan of your magazine for a long time. You never have her on the cover or on the inside. It is a shame. I am a fan of Kristen Stewart and I would like her beauty and hair secrets. You often have the same people on the cover. I am sure a bit of will do good.

    3. varina says:

        Hi Briani,
Thanks for the suggestion of Tiffani…we love her brunette hair! As for pixie cuts, they often enhance fabulous feminine features like gorgeous cheekbones, sparkling eyes and graceful brows.

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi Mrs. Waqar,
Follow Mother Nature’s cue and stick with the deep shades you mentioned. Check out the current issue for haircolor inspiration, and set up a consultation with your hairstylist. A salon professional will be able to help you choose shades to complement your skin tone, eye color and more.

    6. Cheyenne says:

I have recently dyed the bottom half of my hair black and I want to dye it back brown. What’s the healthiest way?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi Cheyenne,
It is important to consult a professional colorist—someone who has the skill to lighten your hair safely, especially since you just colored your hair. In order to maintain the health of your hair, you should really trust a salon professional.

    7. Heather says:

I think Shailene Woodley has some of the best brunette hai, it’s always shiny and healthy and always looks amazing on her. Also thank you for the hair color advice.
