Social Media Sensation & Singer Cailee Rae Talks Beauty
No one knows the power of social media more than 16-year-old social media star Cailee Rae. The teenage singer/songwriter skyrocketed to fame when she began posting covers on her Instagram page. A few years later, Cailee has an EP out called Overthinking, and a music video she conceptualized and directed herself for her song “Anchor.” Not only is she a talented musician, the rising star is super into her hair and beauty game. Sophisticate’s told you first—Cailee Rae is the one to watch in 2017!
Sophisticate’ Hairstyle Guide: You released your first music video for your original song “Anchor.” You came up with the concept and everything! Tell us about it.
Cailee Rae: I co-directed it, which was crazy. I’ve never done that before! I [couldn’t] give this song to someone and see what idea they come up with, this has to be my expression of what this song means to me. I came up with this crazy concept and found an amazing team that was able to bring my whole vision to life.
Sophisticate’s: When did you realize you had a true talent for singing?
Cailee: I never really realized, I just became confident after posting videos on Instagram. At first I didn’t want to be an artist, I just loved music and writing music. I just never thought I could be an artist. I started posting Instagram videos and things like that, and I ended up just really falling in love with connecting with people all over the world. I loved sharing that part of me with them.
Sophisticate’s: When did you post your first video?
Cailee: When Instagram first came out with the video [function], [about two years ago]. I was writing songs just to write songs; I wanted to give them to other artists and use them for commercials. I was in the studio and one of my friends said, “Hey, you should do a cover. Why don’t you record it and post it?” I ended up posting it, and it got so much good feedback, it was insane.
Sophisticate’s: So you were in the studio for your writing?
Cailee: It was for my music that I had written, but I was not at all expecting to release it as an artist. I fell in love with the studio ever since I walked in it. It just always felt right to me. I didn’t know what I wanted to do and I started doing this, and it all kind of started making sense to me. Growing up, music was definitely my way of expressing myself. I related to it more than I could [when I] talked to someone face-to-face. It was literally my diary. I remember feeling that way and then making other people feel that way with my music, and it was so empowering to me. Connecting to music is what made me happy throughout the days, what made me feel normal but at the same time unique. [Music] is the one language everyone understands.
Sophisticate’s: Let’s talk hair! Has you hair always been this length?
Cailee: No, it’s actually odd. It used to be very long; I cut it maybe two years ago. My hair is super thick and I always hated it. I was always scared to cut my hair short because it’s kind of curly and I didn’t want it to frizz. I ended up cutting it and fell in love with it. It fits my personality more, it’s funky! It’s probably to my shoulders, collar bone length. It’s long enough to put it up and do stuff with it, but short enough to be a lob.
Sophisticate’s: Do you color your hair?
Cailee: I do! I’m naturally blonde. My hair is kind of brown or dirty blonde. What happened was I really wanted my hair white last year, and I dyed it. It’s really hard to maintain if you have warm tones in your hair, which I do, so my hair turned into this ugly blonde, and I said “Throw a dark color over this.” I had never done it, [but] I loved it so I kept the dark brown. [I go in] probably every six to eight weeks. I just got side bangs, I think I’m going to get them shorter because I wanted to do long side bangs first. I love changing my hair!
Sophisticate’s: Any colors you’d love to try?
Cailee: I’d love to try a midnight purple or midnight blue. That would look so pretty!
Sophisticate’s: What’s your go-to daily hairstyle?
Cailee: I get out of the shower, and I’ll either grab the diffuser and crunch it and blow-dry it, or I’ll blow-dry it straight and then curl it. I love curling my hair because I love to make it look like I slept in curls. I really love crown braids.
Sophisticate’s: How often do you wash your hair?
Cailee: I wash my hair once every three days. It’s a growing trick I learned from a stylist because my hair wasn’t growing. I started shampooing my hair once every three days, and it ended up making my hair grow so much. It made it stronger, softer and more natural.
Sophisticate’s: Great tip! What are some of your styling tools?
Cailee: I love the Drybar products. I love their Triple Sec, which is a texturizing spray. I love throwing that in my hair after I curl it because it makes [the curls] messy and holds for a really long time. I love all of their tools! I love Oribe, and Jen Atkin’s brand. It smells so good!
Sophisticate’s: Do you use any other styling products?
Cailee: I really like Not Your Mothers. That’s a really good drugstore steal; I love their sea salt spray.
Sophisticate’s: What are some ways you keep your hair healthy?
Cailee: I love coconut oil, I think that’s my biggest tip. You want to use a protectant spray or oil of some sort before you put heat on. I like to use a lot of different products for that, but a coconut oil hair treatment at least once a week is one of my biggest tips. Coconut oil is magic. I will put it on at night and wash it out in the morning. It heals a lot of my dead ends and makes my hair really soft and healthy.
Sophisticate’s: What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done to your hair?
Cailee: When I dyed my hair white, I was really dumb and thought if I put a lot of purple shampoo on my hair and let it sit for an hour [that] it would make my hair really white. My hair turned a violet purple because I just bleached it, and I couldn’t get it out. I ruined the treatment I just did and after you bleach your hair, you’re not supposed to bleach it for 14 days, so I had to sit. It wasn’t even a cute violet, and it was only certain pieces.
Sophisticate’s: If we were to peek inside your makeup bag, what would we find?
Cailee: IT Cosmetics CC Cream, Make Up For Ever Crème Blushes, Lancome mascara, a coconut oil chap stick, and a MAC lip liner.
Sophisticate’s: Do you have a favorite lip product?
Cailee: Make Up For Ever did a collab with Icona Pop, and they have the most amazing shades of colors—I’m obsessed with them! They have this one shade that’s an orange-red. I was never a big fan of red lipstick because I’m really pale, but this shade of red is amazing. All of their lipsticks stay on forever. A good drugstore one I’m obsessed with is the NYX Cosmetics Liquid Suede Crème Lipstick. They smell amazing.
Sophisticate’s: What is your go-to hair and beauty look for red carpet events?
Cailee: Definitely a wave in my hair and a smoky eye of some sort. I love changing the color of my smoky eye. My favorite is the rusty orange with a brown. I really love mauve colors with grey tones.
Sophisticate’s: What do you want girls to know about beauty?
Cailee: Beauty is really fun and you can’t make an error with it. A lot of people think they have to be good at makeup and they don’t. I want girls to take risks with makeup; it’s so fun and expressive. It was a really great way for me to express myself and that’s why I love beauty.
