Face Forward: Cherry Delight

It’s almost the weekend! Do you have your makeup look figured out yet? Here’s your weekly inspiration…

Makeup artist Michael Anthony used Rita’s cherry-red dress as lip inspiration, then accompanied her bold kiss with strong brows, mile-long lashes and glitter eyeshadow. Not for the timid, this makeup vibe definitely does not follow the “choose one feature to play up” guideline.

One Great Look: Beach Balayage

Hair by Courtney Casale
Adrienne Dara Hair Salon, Philadelphia, PA

Blondes really do have more fun! This expert balayage carefully balances natural tones to create a dynamic and ultra-stylish look. Perfect for heading to the beach or a night on the town, you can never go wrong with blonde waves.

The. Best. Top. Knot.

Who else would show up with a top knot that’s perfection than the fabulous Jennifer Lopez. Hair Artist Chris Appleton created the look and dubbed her “Snatched Barbie” on Instagram. Sleek sides, a taller-than-tall knot and gorgeous makeup to finish the look. Don’t forget the bobby pins!

Save The Date

On November 4, Hailee Steinfeld will be hosting the 2018 MTV European Music Awards. “I am SO excited,” the singer/actress shared on Instagram. “I might just have to perform a new song while I’m there.” New music and a variety of Hailee hairstyles and outfits? We are there!

4 Fab Hairstyles!

These hair looks are from hair pro Sam Carpenter’s latest collection called The Beacon. “Beacon is a fun and futuristic take on feminine beauty. The images don’t show beauty as submissive or sexual, but owned and controlled by the woman herself,” he explains. “I hope it’s a representation today’s contemporary female can relate to.” Bright colors, incredible cuts and fun designs…what more could you want?

1  Seriously In Control!
Love this short style with long, wispy nape and baby bangs. The hues are a melange of rich oranges and lavenders.

2  Sleek Perfection
The straight-edge bob takes a sleek turn with an off-center part and ear tuck. Purple-hued haircolor blends into deed red tones for a contemporary vibe.

3  Do You Dare?
Shorty fringe blends into flippy lengths, while rich burgundy accents say 2019!

4  Hair Dressing
Ripples of hair at crown are gathered into an old-fashioned ribbon-candy look, while lengths (or extensions) echo the feel. Rose-gold and brunette hues provide contrast.

Real Life Rapunzel

Tap into your inner long-locked princess with this romantic and ethereal mane. Dark-blonde hair is plaited into an intricate, multi-strand braid that cascades down the back. The ends are left loose and a few jewelled hair accessories are added for extra glam. Styled by Nikki Clayton, from The Salon by InStyle inside JCPenney in Fort Smith, AR.

Instant Change

Need a mane change? You could try bangs. And just to give you a little inspo on how awesome they can be, we provide one very fabulous example: Jennifer Lopez. A new addition to the singer’s beauty mode, this fringe is long and wispy–almost like a new short layer to accompany the star’s already layered locks. They look great, right?

One Great Look: What A Peach

Hair by Michelle Golden
Bella Hair Salon, Ames, IA

Who can resist this sorbet style? Rose-gold, peach and shortbread shades are seamlessly blended throughout this coif. Strands are turned into loose waves that cascade past the shoulders for a flirty and feminine finish.

AMAs Tonight!

The American Music Awards are on tonight, and we can’t wait to see everybody. Sneak peek: this is Vanessa Hudgens, all dolled up and pretty in pink, ready to go tonight. If this is any hint of the beauty that’s to come, we are so stoked.

Super Glam

Katy Perry wins the wow award for this look. A snow-white pixie combines with dramatic eye makeup and vibrant red lips for a beauty move we can’t ignore. File this one under, “next time I really need to impress…”

WATERCOLOR COPPER with rose-gold influence…is perfect for autumn days.

ROUGH DIAMOND showcases an illuminated grey/silver combo—perfection!

CAPTIVATING SHINE adds brilliance to raven hair.

Ginger Snap

Warm-toned strands cascade into a volume-packed, shoulder-brushing look that is slightly shorter in back. Tresses are smoothed, curving under and toward the chin. This gorgeous mane was created by Dionna G Beauty, from The Salon by InStyle inside JCPenney, in Algonquin, IL.

I am a DIY girl all the way! Well right up until I had the opportunity for Hair Hero Justin Anderson (@justinandersoncolor) to work his magic! He is truly one of the most talented and sought after hairstylists in the world and especially in Hollywood where he runs the DP Hue House (@dphue). This is not your average salon. It’s a mansion in Beverly Hills transformed into a client/stylist dream home with the most gorgeous scenic views of the city.

The day of my visit everybody from Chelsea Handler to Jennifer Aniston had appointments as well. The clientele is unbelievable. Miley Cyrus, Kristin Cavallari, Brooke Burke, Margot Robbie and Ashley Tisdale just to name a few. The list goes on and on! Not only does he create incredible hairstyles for the stars but he also created his haircare line of DP Hue products that are all about maintaining fresh hair color between salon visits. From Apple Cider Vinegar products to Root Touch-Up kits to semi-permanent deep conditioning color glosses…dpHUE has everything you need to keep your color vibrant and fresh. Justin has got you covered even when you step away from the salon chair.

While I was I was in the chair I got the works! He applied a darker root to match my outgrowth, added highlights, brightened my ends, used a gloss on my root, and even handed me over to Lex his master cutter who gifted me this super cute and super short bob. I am so thrilled to have this easy to manage new ‘do and proud to say that Mr. Anderson is my hair hero. He was a dream to spend the day with and his staff was incredible too. So attentive and warm. Modern day salon that’s for sure. Stay tuned for my future column in Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide Magazine coming up as well. For some more blonde envy, follow me on Instagram: @_kimcaldwell

One Great Look—Love Is In The Air

Hair by Alicia DiGianvittorio
Currie Hair, Skin & Nails, Glen Mills, PA

This elegant and romantic updo is a must-try for your next formal occasion. Mocha strands are subtly highlighted with a touch of caramel. The mane is styled into loose curls and then gently rolled and tucked into a chic upsweep with a slightly lifted crown.

There seems to be a new trend taking hold…and it smells beautiful! Fresh flowers as hair accessories were seen on the runways, and have started appearing on the red carpet. For a movie premiere, celebrity stylist Mara Roszak used brown hair wire to individually place a dozen roses in Emma Stone’s hair, amongst soft waves. The result was stunning! We’re hoping we see even more of this trend…

From Summer to Fall

Trying to figure out how to make your summer blonde perfect for fall, without giving up the blonde feels? Hair pro Ashlee Allen in Michigan shared this makeover look. “Honey Babe. From a summer blonde to a rich warm fall blonde. Added a dark rich warm base, balayage, lowlights and a dramatic face frame,” she shared on Insta. Bring on Fall!

3 New Ways To Wear Braids

More than just a way to contain your hair, braids have taken on a style life of their own. You can still use them to pull your hair back–but you can do it in oh-so many creative ways. Or you can just use a braid as an accent to your already fabulous style. Here are three new ways to wear a braid, courtesy of Niwel in France…

1. In multiples, with woven thread and fluffy texture.

2. As tiny highlights in a ponytail pull-back, with golden rings.

3. Straight up the back, as a ladder to twin buns.

PUMP you up!

Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide is here for you in your time of beauty need–and that includes those moments when you want to go big and not go home. Pick up a copy of our November 2018 issue on the newsstands, and you’ll find this handy article with the 411, the deets, the specs, the products you need/want/gotta have to plump up your mane to new heights. Go. Grab. Now. Get big.

Silver Stunner

Maegan, Artistic Team Leader at The Salon by InStyle inside JCPenney in Silverdale, WA, created this stunning hairstyle. Vibrant, metallic silver-white tresses free-fall past the shoulders in a smooth, silken texture. This mane is a showstopper!

We all know Julianne Hough likes to change things up when it comes to her hair, switching from long to short, red to blonde. And now, she’s done it again, this time with bangs. “Detaching from what you  know can be challenging, but also so freeing. :),” she wrote on Instagram. “The best thing about hair is how you get to create, play and just have fun with it! So here is a new look, courtesy of frizzy ends and needing a clean cut after going from red to blonde.”

We. Love. It.

One Great Look—Color Play

Hair by Margarita Ford
Euodia Salon, Moorpark, CA

A choppy, free flowing, asymmetrical cut is created as the base of this fun and charismatic coif. Shades of plum, magenta, orchid, lavender, cobalt and sky are perfectly blended together.

We know what we’re doing tonight…season premiere of This Is Us! Mandy Moore in retro hairstyles! So many tears, so much laughter. So happy to start another season…

Welcome To Fall!

While we’ll miss the heat a little bit, we’re totally excited for all the new beauty fall brings. Like this gorgeous makeup look on Kristen Stewart. Long lashes and matte, pale-pink lips combine beautifully with a white sweater. (Not to mention that glimpse of blonde and brunette working together in a short crop…).

If this is what cooler breezes mean, we say Bring. It. On.

The iconic pixie shape was originally made famous by London fashion model Twiggy in the late 60s, and since then, some version has been on trend. So, what’s the current evolution of this famous cropped haircut? With the comeback of the shag, crowns are getting shorter and perimeters have softer lengths, as shown by this look by the Sam Villa Hair Team. We love!

Color Pop

This coif color combination is right on trend! Walnut strands are snipped into a voluminous bob that’s subtly asymmetrical. Locks are spun into flirty curls that show off the hints of deep teal and light blush pink throughout. Hair by Tianna Wyant of JCPenney Salon in Clarion, PA.

Pop! Goes The Color

Looking for a way to add color to your mane, but not sure you’re ready to do the whole thing? Model and beauty entrepreneur Miranda Kerr shows you a pretty alternative! A thin slice of hair on each side of a precise center part is colored a honey-blonde hue, in bold contrast to dark-brunette lengths. It’s just the right pop of color to satisfy those shade cravings!

One Great Look—Dark & Decadent

Hair by Morgan Mislitski
Wilkes Barre, PA

Go for a deep and dark hue this season! Ebony tresses fall slight past the shoulders in loose curls. The opaque shade is absolutely stunning and will make you full glam and sassy.

Emmy Duos!

Last night’s Emmy Awards brought the stars out in full force on the red carpet, and we loved every minute of it. We especially loved it when they joined forces to show off their fab style. Here are our favorite duos from last night…

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake

Milo Ventimiglia and Lonnie Chavis

Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson

Emilia Clarke and Millie Bobby Brown

Emmy Awards Tonight!

Remember back in 2000 when baby Rory was one of our new favorite heroines on TV? The Gilmore Girls brought us fast-talking, heart-searing moments and the fabulous manes of Alexis Bledel as Rory and Lauren Graham as Lorelai. And tonight? Alexis Bledel is up for an Emmy for Supporting Actress for her work in The Handmaid’s Tale. We’ll be tuning in to see all the red-carpet beauty and the fabulous actresses who are kicking butt on TV. Congrats to all!

Sometimes we receive such beautiful haircut imagery here at Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide we have to share, share, share! Such is this one from Contreras Academy that has a smooth, sleek crown cut above the ear for high-fashion appeal. The blonde highlights bring about the accent over richer-hued lowlights.
