I recently hosted a charity event in Vancouver, Canada, supporting Dress For Success, which is a non-profit organization that gives disadvantaged women the tools they need to succeed in the work force. I have donated makeovers for this amazing cause and love that they are all about empowerment!

I not only rocked my baby bump to the gala but also sported these modern day finger waves. I always preached that I was officially a short-haired kind of woman now that I’m older, but I’m taking the plunge and on a journey to become Rapunzel.

Since my hair is growing out, it’s getting so tough to find styles that I can wear down without wanting to throw it up in a bun after five minutes. It’s at that in-between length right now, so I curled it enough to become a long bob. The trick is using a small barrel curling iron and creating spirals in layers. Oh, and did I mention lots of hairspray? That’s my go-to for every look. You can take the girl out of Texas….!

First, spray your whole head to kick it off. Start with the bottom layer and clip up the rest. Twist the strands around the barrel going away from your face on both sides. Then layer by layer, repeat. Let the curls cool then use a bristled brush and comb through the curls evenly. After a few strokes the locks will form together and look sleek and clean. Add a spray shine to enhance the glam! These curls lasted me two days!

Everyone asked what salon I got my hair done at and I told them, “If I can do it, so can you!” Yes, I’m talking to you girl! Practice makes perfect. Even though perfect is so boring….so practice makes it easier and easier! Haha. Whip out that iron and spray and get started little lady!

KIMBERLY IS MARRIED! A NEW POST FROM SOPHISTICATE’S STAR BEAUTY BLOGGER

kimberly is married

Coming soon in Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide, you can get the whole scoop on my New Year’s Eve Great Gatsby inspired wedding hair for my big day!

But first, let’s cover my Farrah Fawcett rehearsal dinner do! If you have been a bride, then you understand the chaos in the few days leading up to it all. I was my own wedding planner because, I’ll be honest, I like things the way I like things. Also, because I am just a creative person and what better way than your own wedding to really dive in and expand your mind!

kimberly is married 2I couldn’t have pulled off this look without my fave tool, my Andis flat iron! I was swamped with tying up all the loose ends and helping set up, so I didn’t have time to give my hair a good cleanse. Lucky for me, Klorane donated travel-size dry shampoos to put in all of the guest gift bags so I gave it a try. Wow!!! What a relief! The grease was gone and my hair was fuller than ever. I sprayed the mist on my roots and after a bit of teasing, I flipped my hair and spritzed for volume. I split my hair right down the middle with my comb and bumped up the crown of my head for drama. I took my Andis flat iron and flipped my ends up and away from my face. I popped on a fringe sequin blush short dress, some nude strappy heels, and a smokey eye with a pale lip and I was set.

My soon-to-be-hubby needed a quick freshen up after helping me slave away all day so he leaned on his Andis beard trimmer for that perfectly rugged Marlboro man edge. What a hunk. When we walked out to greet my loved ones to kick off our wedding weekend extravaganza, everyone was in awe of that ten minute mane I just polished up! Then the fun began! We danced all night and I definitely added a few hair flips in there because why the heck not!?! Thank you Klorane and Andis for helping me primp for my big weekend! What a blast!

HOP ON THE BAND-WAGON!

bandwagon

In addition to her rising singing career, Sophisticate’s Beauty Blogger and Columnist Kimberly Caldwell has been designing up a storm! “I have been performing on a stage my entire life, from Star Search to American Idol and even overseas, but this is an entirely new stage in my life!” shares Kimberly. “Designing and creating handmade leather handbags and accessories is my new love.  I have a slight obsession with shopping and I love the feeling of discovering a line or product that is unique or one of a kind, and that is why I created Stage Presents. After becoming a mega fan of Head’n Home Hats, I was thrilled when they asked me to collaborate on designing my own Stage Presents Headbands! My friends at Head’n Home really welcomed my creativity and have perfected each piece to truly represent me and the Stage Presents brand.”

Above is Kimberly’s Tied Together Headband, which she describes as, “genuine black leather braided up one side to meet the three black pyramid studs on the other side. The three studs represent the tight relationship between my mom, sister and myself and how ‘tied together’ we truly are!” Check out http://www.headnhome.com/kimberly-caldwell.html for all of Kimberly’s headband creations!

KIMBERLY CALDWELL: ACCESSORIZE!

photo1[2]

Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide’s Star Beauty Blogger Kimberly Caldwell has a new blog! Check it out here…

Soooo, what to do when you are having a bad hair day or when you just don’t have to time to wash, blow, and style your locks? Cover it up!

We have so many options these days and a messy bun is “in,” but that gets so old. From beanies to fedoras and headbands, your picks are limitless. Make people think you are making a fashion statement, not hiding your messy mane by rocking it with confidence. One of my fave go-to toppers is my knit mustard colored beanie I found at the L.A. flea market.  It adds a pop of color to my ensemble of the day and it’s easy to throw on and run out the door.

photo2[2]

I am always on the run and I love a good accessory, so I am teaming up with my friends at Head N’ Home hats to launch my own handmade leather hair accessory line just for us!  I sport their exclusive leather hats all the time to jazz up my outfit. The great thing about topping off your look with a hat is there is minimal time dedicated to your exposed hair. Tie up the back in a low bun or pony and blow dry/flat-iron your bang and add a little wax for texture. If you are one of the lucky ones who don’t need hair on your face, then slick it all back in a bun and just let an inch or two of your root pop out the front so you don’t look bald. Sometimes I even wear an elastic headband underneath to keep my hair in place.

With my new hair accessory line, Stage Presents, you can either rock my versatile headbands over your bangs or with all of your hair back in a pony. We are putting the last touches on my black-on-black studded headband (it’s thick enough to mask your defiant do) and my stained-glass leather knot reversible headband that I am so proud of (I love the idea of a two-in-one purchase! Double duty!). We are in the final stages of perfecting these unique leather designs and making sure  anyone and everyone can rock these accessories comfortably and confidently.

Here’s some pics of me strutting my stuff with the best bad-hair-day trick in the book….I mean, in the magazine. Pick up the latest issue of Sophisticates Hairstyle Guide on stands now to read my column, “Hairdo’s and Don’ts”, plus follow me on Instagram and Twitter @_kimcaldwell to catch up with me and my latest bob. Until next time, head up ladies!

My Mommy Makeover

When I started pondering about my new blog, my favorite makeover story popped into my head! My girlfriend, Cat, is a mommy of three beautiful children and an amazing photographer (catwatson.com). We connected a few years ago because her husband and my new fiancé joined the same pro-soccer team in Vancouver. I always thought Cat was adorable and really had such a spunky vibe that I loved.

Cat sent me a text me one day and asked if I would be up for giving her a makeover. I was like….duh! Project! Yippee! For the first time in a long time, Cat took the afternoon for herself and stopped by my house for a lesson in hair and makeup, plus some much needed juicy girl talk. We started at my favorite upscale thrift store, My Sister’s Closet (all proceeds go to a women’s battered shelter), and snagged some cute, very inexpensive statement pieces to vamp up her wardrobe.

Our next stop was the grocery store to grab some easy-to-apply L’Oréal Preference hair color in a box. We decided to go a little darker with a tint of auburn to give her some edge, but nothing too drastic on our first go round. Once we landed back at my place, the transformation began.

We kicked it off with some makeup tips like: use moisturizer with an SPF, a good eyebrow pencil is a necessity, and always add a pop of color to your cheeks for an instant glow. Oh, and a little mascara goes a long way!

Then we moved on to her hair. After I taught her how to apply the new vibrant color, we rinsed and added a leave-in conditioner which does wonders. I gave her step-by-step instructions on how to round-brush blow-dry and do a quick flat iron. Then she revealed she wanted blunt bangs! I was secretly jumping up and down that she trusted me with this task! I think I freaked her out, because when she said go, I went to town with the scissors acting all pro and stuff… haha! Starting from about two inches back from her hair line, I took a comb and made sure I had an even amount of hair on both sides of her face to gather what would soon be her new bangs. With the hair directly in front of her face and placed in between my index and middle finger, I slid down to right at her eye line and the trimming began. I carefully blended the sides up from her ear to the edge of her brow at an angle. A tiny clip of her ends and an added spritz of Thermafuse dry oil and sha-bam! Brand new hair and brand new confidence!

We dolled her up in a fun sweater, leather jacket, and scarf and she was officially made over. She’s always been a cutie, but she had a new found swag about her. I can’t imagine having this much time to spend on yourself every day when you are a mom, but I at least gave her the tips of how to make herself feel and look fresh even if she’s on the go. I will never forget how she looked at herself in the mirror for the first time after our makeover was complete. She was radiant. She just needed a little guidance and it was well deserved.

It took us about four hours total and less than $150 for a full head-to-toe transformation. So Mommies, even if you don’t have all day, at least take a minute for yourself once in a while. Your husband and kiddos will thank you for it. Not like they don’t have enough to thank you for, right?!

HOLIDAY HAIR

Kimberly CaldwellKimberly Caldwell

Look sophisticated and sexy for your holiday parties with this sleek twisted back bun. Start the teasing process at the top of your forehead and continue all the way around your neck from ear to ear. Spritz hairspray at the roots and let dry for 30 seconds. From the top begin twisting back tightly into a roll and and apply bobby pins once you get to the back. Repeat on opposite side and secure the front of the twists with bobby pins making sure they are hidden in the roll. Create a tight ponytail with the excess hair in the back. Loop a donut sponge through the tail to start your bun. Split the hair evenly around the donut and add an extra clear elastic band around the now covered sponge. Wrap the left over ends around the base of the bun and secure with pins. Hairspray heavily and smooth any fly always. You are now ready to dazzle all your friends and coworkers at your holiday party! I love adding a Makeup Forever burgundy or red lipstick for a pop of drama. Happy holidays to you and your family!

ALBUM COVER SHOOT STYLING

Kimberly Caldwell
Kimberly Caldwell

I love doing my own hair so much that I even styled it for my album cover shoot! We wanted to go fun and fresh so I took advantage of my natural waves. My waves are not the type that tame themselves, so I used quite a bit of product to make them “look” effortless. After a wash, I towel dried my hair while using the towel to start the scrunch process from the sides and underneath. I applied a generous amount of Thermafuse Redefiner Curl/Wave Enhancer with my hands while using the scrunch up motion with my claws all over my head (you can also use your favorite mousse or foam). Then, after letting it air-dry for 10-15 minutes, I start the blow-dryer. If your hair is longer, I recommend using the diffuser attachment that comes with most dryers these days. For short hair, just use those hands. While holding up the scrunch full of hair, aim the blow-dryer at the bunch of hair but keep the handle moving so you don’t fry your hair. Flip your head over and continue the process on all sections until hair is 95% dry. Then take a comb and tease at the crown and underneath to give it extra volume. Spritz Aussie Scrunch Spray all over and give it a good final hand scrunch all over. I usually use a flat iron to smooth out my bangs just a bit to soften the look. Add a matte wax to the ends to ease the frizz (I use GHD Sculpting Wax). Then you are playful and sexy and ready for your new adventure.
