Magical Holiday Looks /wp-content/uploads/2018/11/8.jpg

This holiday season, the right hair accessory can mean the difference between a look that’s naughty or nice—pick which one you want to be in our latest issue!

OK…it’s officially the new year and it’s that time again for change! While you’re thinking about your new haircut and haircolor—pick up our new issue of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide this weekend (on sale now!) and get some fabulous ideas. We’ve included hundreds of fab ideas especially for you. So with the chilly weather outside you can cuddle up with us and start planning your hair move! Here are just three featured that we love…all from our friends at Italy’s James Hair Fashion Club!

Feeling yourself? Then you need a mane style to match. Perhaps this lioness look worn by Khloe Kardashian is just the ticket. Tons of tight waves, with front tresses pulled to the top of the crown in a seriously high pony banded in gold. Waterfall effect in full glory. Rawr!

Recognize & Repair

It’s 2018 and time to make your mane the most beautiful it’s ever looked. According to Viviscal, the main signs of damaged hair include split ends, hair breakage and dullness. In contrast, healthy hair is shinier, thicker and less prone to breakage. Normally, we lose between 50 and 100 hairs every day. However, if your hair breaks easily and you are losing more than 100 hairs in your hairbrush or shower drain, your hair could be damaged.

Hair shedding and damaged hair can be caused by overstyling, too-harsh chemical hair products, hair color treatments, heat-styling such as blow-drying and straightening, shampoos with parabens and sulfates, and environmental factors. Damaged hair can also be caused by internal factors such as poor diet, stress, aging, medication, post-pregnancy, menopause and smoking.

As a damaged hair treatment for damage due to overstyling, harsh chemicals and heat-styling, reduce your use of heat styling tools and cut down on overstyling with tight braids and other elaborate hairstyles that cause damage and breakage to hair. To help repair damaged hair and reduce hair shedding, try a hair growth supplement to nourish hair follicles from within with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. (Viviscal makes a good one: Viviscal Extra Strength Hair Growth Supplement!)

One Great Look: Triple Threat

Hair by Sonya Amber
Pure Lavi Salon, Luzerne, PA

This decadent, triple layered look is exactly the coif you’ve been dreaming of. Dark espresso tresses transforms into a rich chocolate before turning into bright vanilla tips. Locks are turned into blended waves with a knotted detail.

Julianne’s Glam Look

Glamour, glamour, glamour! Julianne Hough took on a glamour-girl vibe with luscious curls, thanks to Jill Buck from Nine Zero One Salon in West Hollywood. Buck shares how she created the look…

“I gave Julianne’s hair a few sprays of Joico Blonde Life Brightening Veil protectant before curling. You can never have too much protection.

I set her curls in a tighter set, moving all away from her face in the same pattern. This look was very much ’70s-inspired, and I wanted the S shape to be visible. This is where Joico’s Hair Shake Texturizer Spray was key in holding the shape I created while brushing and teasing the S wave. I worked in small sections curl by curl and then gave a generous spray of hairspray to hold in place once I was happy with it.”

HAPPY 2018!!!

May 2018 be your best and most beautiful year so far! Let’s have a lot of fun together!

Ryan Seacrest will host the primetime festivities and lead the traditional countdown to midnight from Times Square in New York City, as he has for the last 12 years, with live onsite reporting from actress and comedian Jenny McCarthy, and performances by Camila Cabello, Nick Jonas and Sugarland.

Ciara will host the Los Angeles festivities, which features additional performances by Kane Brown, BTS, Kelly Clarkson, Fitz & The Tantrums, Florida Georgia Line, Halsey, Khalid, Shawn Mendes, Charlie Puth, Portugal. Need a last-minute hair idea for your New Year’s Eve party? Be sure to pick up the current issue of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide, on sale now on newsstands everywhere. In it, you’ll find hundreds of styles you can try, like this gorgeous one upsweep from Intermede in Paris. Go. Now. Buy. Decide. Plan. Party!

Midnight Glitz – Makeup Tutorial

Created by Global Corporate Educator, Ami Mallon using Osmosis Colour Mineral Cosmetics, this is a gorgeous way to add sparkle to any party you might be attending in the very near future. Dubbed Midnight Glitz, it’s the perfect sparkling addition to your special night…

1.  Sweep the darker shade from the Lustrous Contour Duo into your crease to create definition.

2.  Apply black eye pencil on your lid from lash line to crease; blend using a contour brush.

3.  Apply black eye pencil to your lower lash line and blend under your eye using a smudge brush for a natural smokey look.

4.  Using your finger or a smudge brush, dab Azure Water Color onto the center of your lid and blend into t.he crease and outward

5.  Apply a small amount of Azure Water Color to the center of the lower lash line to make the eye look larger.

6.  With your finger or a clean smudge brush, dab a small amount of Opal Water Color around the inner corner of your eye, as well as under your brow, to brighten and highlight. Then, apply several coats of volumizing mascara to complete the eye look.

Magnesium Must-Have

If you want to give your tresses a boost, you may want to make sure you’re getting enough magnesium in your diet, shares Viviscal, makers of Viviscal Hair Growth and Hair Care Programs. Magnesium helps prevent calcium build-up on your scalp. When calcium clogs hair follicles, your scalp will be dry, flaky and you could even see some hair loss. These calcium deposits on and around the hair follicles can increase over time due to scalp inflammation.

Magnesium counteracts with calcium, improving circulation and making sure calcium gets to your bones where it’s needed, rather than clogging up on the surface of your scalp. Better circulation also means that other nutrients from your diet are getting to your follicles.

It’s a win-win!

One Great Look: Intricate Updo

Hair by Ashley Lantz
Tress Passing At Studio 24 in Avondale, AZ

Not every updo is created equal and this one is absolutely stunning! Jet-black strands with vanilla blonde highlights are twisted up into an elegant, tousled coif. A few pearl hairpins are placed in the center for an alluring finish.

Party Upsweep – How-To!

New Year’s Eve is coming up, and if you’re still looking for the perfect upsweep, here’s a fab option for you, created by SJ Forbes…

1. Prepare the hair with Kérastase K Styling V.I.P. Volume in Powder, and then curl the hair to give it more texture and movement.

2. Take a halo section around the crown and secure with a clear band to create the first ponytail.

3. Take another section from behind the ears and secure with a clear band to create a second ponytail, keeping the two front sections loose.

4. Take the two ponytails and tie them in a knot, securing them with pins.

5. Keep knotting the ponytails and securing with pins until you run out of hair to knot. Take the remaining hair and twist and pin up around the knotted bun.

6. Take the first loose side section – leaving a few tendrils around the face – and comb back the rest of the hair, crossing it over the knotted bun. Repeat the process with the other loose section of hair.

7. Carefully twist up the remaining hair and pin up the ends underneath the bun. Finish and set the look with  hairspray.

Happy Holidays!

Today, many of us are celebrating Christmas Eve and sharing the love! One of the most fabulous holiday movies is It’s A Wonderful Life, which has become a tradition.

Twinning — How To Braids & Buns

Need a cute and quick style for a holiday party? This cutie twin-braid, twin bun look by SJ Forbes is perfect. Here’s the how-to…

1. Prepare the hair with Kérastase K Styling V.I.P. Volume in Powder.

2. Curl the hair using a curling wand; once cool, run your fingers gently through the curls

3. Part the hair down the center, and pin one side out of the way.

4. With the other side, take a section in front and create a French braid along the top of the crown to center back; secure with a clear hair band, leaving ends of braid free.

5. Repeat the French braid on the opposite side.

6. Backcomb the loose end on each of braid and wrap into a bun shape; pin in place.

7. Loosen up the curls, and finish and set the look with hairspray.

Candace’s Style Secret!

How does Fuller House actress Candace Cameron Bure get fuller hair? She revealed her mane beauty secret on Instagram…

“Sometimes I don’t have time to wash and blow dry, so my best friend is dry shampoo. I love to use Dove Volume & Fullness. It’s perfect when I need a quick refresh. It also is great for fine hair, like mine, to add extra body and grit to the root when it’s fresh and clean.”

One Great Look: Twisted Details

Hair by Michele Pritchard
Currie Hair, Skin & Nails in Glen Mills, PA

Brides think about adding fun, floral hair accessories to your mane for the big day. This gorgeous chocolate brown mane with honey blonde highlights is twisted into an intricate, wavy ponytail. A long pearl vine is wrapped around the ponytail to finish the look.

Julianne’s Pony

Julianne’s Hough gives us the perfect pony for any occasion. Created by hairstylist Jill Buck from Nine Zero One Salon in West Hollywood, here’s the how-to…

“For this look, we did a fun and flirty ponytail,” shares Buck. “When hair is extremely blonde like Julianne’s it’s important to see how it reads on camera and typically the blonder it is the more washed out it can look. So when choosing my curl pattern I went more structured in order to see it better. After the hair was curled and spritzed with Joico’s Power Spray Fast-Dry Finishing Spray, I sectioned a small ponytail on the center of her head; that’s how I ensure the clip in extension will stay hidden inside. Leaving the top hair out, I collected all the hair and secured with a large rubber band. The hair left on top was spritzed again with Power Spray and twisted back using just my fingers to create texture and softness. A few pins and sprays and she was ready!”

Red-y For The Holidays?

Still looking for the finishing touches for your holiday glamour outfit? Reese Witherspoon shared that one of her favorite holiday party picks is Elizabeth Arden’s Red Door Red lipstick (and yes, she shares, she likes her lip shade to match her outfit). Perhaps it’s just the thing your beauty routine was looking for….

Color Full

So pretty! This look by Denise Barreda of JCPenney Salon in Yuba City, CA, is a gorgeous combination of deep purple, raspberry and strawberry, melting into buttery caramel ends. And it’s all topped off with yummy swirls of curls. We’re completely satiated with all this delicious color!

Baby Bob

Lauren Conrad, queen of the beachy-wave bob, shows off yet another version of her ever-evolving classic hairstyle: the baby bob. Having gone shorter, inch by inch, over the past years, the star just showed off her latest cropped cutie on Instagram. Love! (And the beachy wave is still there, too!)

One Great Look: Crimson Chic

Hair by Leah Lincoski
Pure Lavi Salon in Kingston, PA

Spice up a stunning espresso-hued mane with fiery highlights! Vibrant crimson strands help bring depth and dimension to the hair. The fantastic layered cut and curls help round out the style into a stunning ‘do for everyday.

Coconut Shine

Feeling the need for a bit of extra shine and sleek detail? Adding a formula with coconut to your hair routine can help out a lot. Coconut can help fill in cracked cuticles in the hair, which will give the appearance of smoother locks. Aunt Jackie’s Curls & Coils Coconut Creme Recipes Butter Creme Intensive Moisture Sealant is a good choice; you can use it on damp hair, or even run a dab over the top of dried tresses to add shine detail and tame flyaways. Big, giant huge bonus: Coconut has an intoxicating aroma that’s hard to resist when it’s cold outside and you’re longing for the tropics!

Cute Curls

Some people think having short hair means only having one look. All. The. Time. Those people would be wrong! Because here’s another adorable photo of Isabela Moner, showing off her cute cropped coif in yet another style–this time with fabulous springy curls going this way and that. The look is fresh, fun, flirty, fabulous and totally inspiring. We love. Love. L♥ve.

One of our favorite Disney musicals, Frozen, is airing tonight on ABC-TV. We love the 3D computer-animated fantasy film inspired by Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen…right down to Elsa’s beautiful braid! There you go, we tied in hair! Now cozy up…and get some corn for popping…:)

Midnight Moves

Color stand out so enticingly against a dark base. Here, stylist Alyssa Greenamyer, of jcp Salon in Canton, OH, took gorgeous pitch black tresses and dipped them in a ravishing dark teal hue. The top half of the coif is pulled up and twisted into a effortless knot.

Ultra Violet

Purple! Purple! Purple! That’s the color you’re going to be seeing a lot more of in the coming year, according to Pantone, who has selected the Ultra Violet shade as the Color of the Year for 2018. It’s a great beauty color, and you can expect to see nail polish, lipgloss, eyeshadows and so much more in various shades of deep purple hue. Gorgeous!

One Great Look: Silver Waves

Hair by Courtney Casale
Gregory & Marie’s Unisex Hair Salon Havertown, PA

Channel your inner ice queen this season with this gorgeous blonde look! Blonde strands are left dark at the roots, before blending into a white blonde with nutmeg accents. The look is finished with defined waves for head turning volume.

Two Ways To Wear Brunette

Leave it to Demi Lovato and Sarah Hyland to blow the style charts with their shades of brunette. Demi goes for a super-dark, super-deep shade, while Sarah opts for red highlights to liven up her brunette. Either way works for us. #DecisionsDecisions

Guess Who

Jennifer Lopez is a Guess Girl! The singer and actress is the newest face of Guess Jeans and is fronting the company’s 2018 Spring collection campaign. “When I got the call from Paul Marciano asking me to become the new Guess Girl, I was thrilled and excited to be a part of such an iconic brand that I have loved since I was a teenager,” shares Jennifer. “When I look back at early Guess campaigns through the years, you see all of these beautiful models and iconic images that Paul has created. It is a tremendous compliment to have been selected for Guess’ Spring 2018 campaign.”

Alison Sweeney takes us behind the scenes on her Twitter page as she gets glammed up for tonight’s original movie, Christmas At Holly Lodge,  on the Hallmark Channel. We’re in full holiday mode here at Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide and now this sweet movie will be the icing on our holiday cake!  Can’t wait!
