Emmy Look How-To: Laura Dern

We know we’re not the only ones who loves Big Little Lies’s Laura Dern’s luscious locks at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards! Her hairstylist, celebrity hairdresser Ryan Trygstad was kind enough to break down her feisty look for us using The One by Frédéric Fekkai products…

“Once seeing the dress, we decided to go with the more sexy undone texture, with a bit of edge and choppiness. I first prepped Laura’s hair with One to Believe In Leave-In Conditioner then blew her hair half dry with a large round brush. Next I added The Gifted One Multitasker Creme through the mid-shaft and ends for protection and shine. Then I used the One Up Lift Volume Spray for root lift and long-lasting control. Once Laura’s hair was completely dry I first sprayed the entire head with the One To Hold Hairspray I did this to help with hold when I next curled her hair with a ceramic one-inch, leaving the ends of the hair a bit straighter and spikey. For the final product I sprayed One and Then Some Dry Texturizing Spray for a dry loose hold, and sexiness!”

We love these looks from New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2018 featuring these looks created with TRESemme Repair & Protect 7 Shampoo and Conditioner and TRES Two Hair Spray. The TRESemme Fresh Start Volumizing Dry Shampoo is massaged into roots with fingers when hair is dry for max texture and the TRESemme Keratin Smooth Shine Serum is used to create a roughed up rock ’n’ roll effect. Looks by Justin Marjan, TRESemme Global Stylist for Alice + Olivia.  I did not wake up like this hair!

We love our anniversary issue cover girl, Carrie Underwood, and can’t get enough of her hair changeups as featured in our collector’s edition of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide. Here are four fab looks showcased (but there are more!). Pick your favorite and check out our issue on newsstands wow before we say bye until our next issue!

1. Volumninous partial upsweep

2. Pure platinum with long layers

3. Glamour-girl curls

4. Beachy on-stage finger tousled look

Pink Punch

Never be afraid to play with color! Danielle Metzner from The Salon by InStyle in Brighton, MI, created this candy-coated coif. Mauve roots flow into a yummy raspberry hue with a peachy finish. Strands fall sleekly past the shoulders. #jcpsalon #salonbyinstyle #jcpenneysalon

Textured Bun How-To

A chic upsweep is always on trend! Seen all over the runways, updos like buns are an effortless and appealing way to add texture and simple glam to your look. Recreate this stunning look done by Michael Johnson for Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Fall 2017 collection, using Biolage R.A.W. Styling Collection…Here’s the how-to!

  1. To prep, apply Biolage R.A.W. Smoothing Styling Milk to ease the grip of blow-dry and to nourish
  2. Blow-dry or air-dry the hair by running fingers through to enhance natural texture
  3. Center-part the hair and comb through to give the hair direction
  4. Create a high ponytail, leaving two-inches of hair from the hairline out of the ponytail
  5. Take the two remaining sidepieces and loosely wrap around the ponytail
  6. Spray Biolage R.A.W. Texturizing Styling Spray on ponytail and lightly backcomb it
  7. After adding texture, pin the ponytail to create a loose and touchable bun
  8. Finish it off with Biolage R.A.W. Frizz Control Styling Spray through the hair to maintain frizz and hold back flyaways

One Great Look – Silver Fox

Hair by Casey Huber
South Main St. Salon, Evart, MI

Enticing, sensual and captivating–that’s what comes to mind when checking out this beautiful mane. Vibrant, silver-grey strands transition from raven roots for a trend-setting overall style. Hair is styled into loose waves for texture. Love!

MYTH BUSTED: Is Hot Water Hair Safe?

We’ve all heard the trick of washing our mane with cold water. Is that because hot water is actually damaging to our coifs? According to the experts at Viviscal, hot-water washes won’t directly cause hair loss, but can affect the health of your scalp. They suggest washing and conditioning strands with warm water, never scalding hot water, and then finishing with a cold water rinse.

Kelsea’s Updo How-To

Photo: FilmMagic | CFlanigan

Kelsea Ballerini stunned, as usual, at the 2017 IHeartRadio Music Festival with the help of celebrity hairstylist Tarryn Feldman. “This look is super sleek but edgy, Feldman explains. “We wanted to do something sophisticated in the front and off her face with a little eye candy in the back.” Check out how the beautiful ‘do was created…

“I used BioSilk Silk Therapy serum with the BioSilk Titanium Professional Hair Dryer to give her hair massive volume. After it was dry, I used Kevin Murphy Doo Over at her roots. I took the BioSilk Titanium Spring Curling Iron to give her texture in the front. I started in the back and did 3 twist braids to create the Mohawk effect in the back. Then, I teased her roots and pinned her hair back and connected to the top braid. I used BioSilk Silk Therapy Dry Clean Shampoo to piece out the front and BioSilk Silk Therapy Finishing Spray: Firm Hold to hold the look. Also, I used some ORIBE Dry Texturizing Spray as well as Kevin Murphy Powder Puff.”

Dynasty Is Here!!!

We. Are. So. Excited!!!!! The re-boot of Dynasty starts tonight on The CW, and we’ve seen the pilot. Ooooooo. It’s so good! Pretty people, pretty clothes, lots of evil looks, sideways glances and torrid affairs–everything we love in a good primetime soap. Once you’re hooked, be on the lookout for an exclusive backstage interview with the hairstylist of the show, coming up very soon in our next issue. Bring on the drama!

Have You Tried Neem Oil?

If you’re looking for a potent treatment for damaged hair, look no further. According to Viviscal, Neem oil comes from a fruit-bearing tree called the Indian Lilac, its seeds are pressed to produce Neem Oil. Like other essential oils, Neem oil has anti-inflammatory properties, it helps keep your scalp clean and can reduce the symptoms of scalp conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

NYFW Badgley Mischka Makeup

NYFW was filled with stunning beauty moves that we have a feeling we’re going to see everywhere! Pro MUA Gucci Westman was the lead makeup artist for INGLOT at the Badgley Mischka Spring/Summer 2018 show. “The inspiration for this look comes from a girl on a coastal holiday in Capri, Italy [and] represents the chic and carefree Italian beauty,” explains Westman. Here, the pro shares how they achieved the look…

Cheeks: On the cheeks bones I applied INGLOT Freedom System Blush in “#124” to add a subtle color and highlight to the face.

Eyes: To create a rusty transparent eye, I used the INGLOT AMC Liquid Illuminator in “#70” as a primer and base for the INGLOT Freedom System Eye Shadows. I mixed shades “#449,” “#607,” “#609” and “#614.” Then eyebrows were filled in with INGLOT’s Eyebrow Pencil. To complete the eyes, I used INGLOT Lash Enhancing Mascara to the top lashes only.

Lips: To finish the look, I mixed three different shades of INGLOT Matte Lipstick in “#229,” “#408 (shown),” and “#438” to create a matte metallic red lip.

Blonde Vs. Brunette

Who wins? Everyone does, when the bobs are this cute. Blondie Emma Roberts and brunette babe Nina Dobrev both show off one of Nine Zero One Salon owner Riawna Capri’s signature cuts–the choppy layered bob. Styled with oh-so beachy waves, it’s a mane victory worth sharing.

Halston’s Topknot How-To

The Orville’s Halston Sage stunned on the red carpet with youthful skin, bold eyeliner and a classic low-knot. Copy the actress’ effortless and elegant look, created by celebrity stylist Gregory Russell with the help of Biolage R.A.W products. Here’s the how-to…

1.  On damp hair, apply a dime-sized amount of Biolage R.A.W. Smoothing Styling Milk to keep the hair smooth and controlled.

2.  Add Biolage R.A.W. Bodifying Styling Jelly for lasting body.

3.  Blow out the hair with a boar bristle round brush. Once dry, flat-iron the hair smoothly.

4.  Create a center part and direct hair back into a low ponytail. Secure with an elastic.

5.  Divide the ponytail into two sections. Take two sections of the ponytail and tie them into a knot and then wind them around the base to create a chignon. Secure with bobby and hairpins.

6.  Spray Biolage R.A.W. Frizz Control Styling Spray to avoid frizz.

We’ve Waited 11 Years…

But it was worth it! Will, Grace, Karen and Jack are all back and picking up 11 years after they left off, with the New Yorkers are retuning to NBC for a brand new season of Will & Grace. Hopefully you cleared your schedule because the season premiere is tonight! P.S. Debra’s hair is still red, still full-volume, and still amazing!

Primetime Pretty

The wait is over! Sarah Hyland, Sofia Vergara, Ariel Winter, Julie Bowen and the rest of ABC’s hit series Modern Family are back tonight for the show’s ninth season. We’re sure this season will be packed with the same relatable drama and family comedy that’s made the series a fan favorite! Not to mention all that gorgeous hair!

Back Off The Backcombing!

Backcombing, or teasing, is a popular trick to add volume to otherwise lifeless and/or thin strands. While this is a quick and effective technique, the process can also be very damaging to your precious mane! That’s why the hair experts at Viviscal came up with three equally effective alternatives to backcombing that you’ve got to try!

  1. Try Out A Thickening Serum: Daily use of a thickening serum can help you achieve fuller hair naturally so teasing will no longer be needed!
  2. Use Hair Nutrients: Vitamins can help dramatically change to health of your hair. For example: Vitamin C improves elasticity, Vitamin B7 strengthens and Niacin helps repair.
  3. Try Hair Fibers: Less hassle that weaves, adding volumizing fibers to wear you need it with instantly give the appearance of a fuller coif.

The Voice Is Back!

Get ready for more chair-turning performances because NBC’s Emmy award-winning competition series, The Voice, is back for its anticipated 13th season! Show veterans Adam Levine and Blake Shelton will be battling against retuning coach Miley Cyrus and first-timer Jennifer Hudson. We cannot wait to see what hair moves this dream team comes up with!

3 Fab Tousled Tress Looks

Go ahead. Give your head a little shake. Doesn’t that feel better? It looks fantastic! Here are three fabulously tousled tress styles that look better with a hair flip, a finger tousle and a defiant head shake…

Melting Into Cool

Fall is officially here, and with it, all sorts of possibilities. And maybe new hair? If you’re feeling a little bold, perhaps a color melt is in your future. This gorgeous look features a raven base with bold highlights in red, purple and teal that melt into below-the-shoulder layered tresses. Your next haircut, haircolor and nail look is just pages away…

Ashley Lujan, master stylist at JCPenney Salon in Roseville, CA, created this amazing mane makeover! Warm, grown-out “bronde” tresses were transformed into a stunning beige-blonde shade with shadowed roots. Lush curls were styled on the ends for a sexy texture.

Debra’s Makeup How-To

Recreate Will & Grace star Debra Messing’s bronze goddess look! Celebrity makeup artist Jeannia Robinette broke down Debra’s entire beauty look explaining, “I wanted to create a bronze, golden goddess look for Debra. We went for a modern, classy beauty look with all the focus on the eyes. I really wanted the eyes to pop and keep everything else a bit more natural.” Copy Debra’s look in these 10 easy steps…

  1. To give Debra the bronzed glow we were after, I applied Star Bronzer “#2 “to her cheeks. Next I added a tiny bit of Lancôme Dual Finish Highlighter in “2-Luminous Gold” to the top of the cheekbone to enhance her glow.
  2. I finished off the cheeks with the Lancôme Blush Subtil Palette in “New Nude.”
  3. I applied the copper shadow from the Lancôme Color Design 5-Pan Eyeshadow Palette in “Kissed by Gold 102” all over the eyelid to start. Next I added the eggplant shade from the Lancôme Color Design 5-Pan Eyeshadow Palette in “603 Olive Soleil” to the crease of the eyelid.
  4. Under the eye, I used the Lancôme Drama Liqui-Pencil in “Chantilly” and blended it out with my finger for a really soft, light gold look.
  5. I wanted the lashes to be super bold and black so we layered on Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara to the top and bottom lashes.
  6. For the brows, I used Lancôme Sourcils Styler in “Brun.”
  7. First I lightly scrubbed her lips to exfoliate and then I prepped then with Lancôme Absolue Precious Cells Nourishing Cells Lip Balm. Debra and I wanted to create a really nude lip, to go with the copper eye so we used Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge in “Timide #237.” I also lined her lips with Lancôme Le Lipstique in “Bronzelle.”

Get Your Tresses Fall Ready!

It doesn’t matter if you’re mourning over the end of summer or ecstatic to snuggle up all Fall, it’s time to get your hair ready for the season change. With fall and winter’s drier and colder climate, your tresses are going to need a little extra TLC. Here are six easy things to make sure you’re adding to your hair care routine to keep your locks looking amazing all season long, according to the tress pros at Viviscal!

  1. Moisturize…We’re talking deep conditioners, hair masques and even a good ole’ DIY treatment. Get the girls together and love on your locks!
  2. Skip The Heat…Give your heated styling tools a break or make sure to take extra precautions to protect your strands.
  3. Cool Down Your Color…Trade in your sun-kissed look for a deeper hue that’ll be season appropriate and easier to maintain.
  4. Volumize!… Heat causes frizz, but cold can leave strands limp and flat. This is the time to whip our volumizing products.
  5. Beware Of Breakage… Be careful with the accessories you use to keep excess tugging and pulling to a minimum.
  6. Do A Detox… Pull out all the salt, chlorine and sunscreen that’s latched on to your tresses all summer with a good detox.
