We just love some of the new gray looks coming out; so stunning! This cut, style and haircolor from our friends at Barberia Salon in California’s Bay area have been keeping clients beautiful for more than 30 years! We just received this stunning look from the salon and had to share. If you’re thinking of a change-up; this one might just be what the doctor ordered.

Friday Fun…

We’ll miss seeing the red hair…

Kentucky Fried Chicken announced today that it has selected Reba McEntire to play the role of Colonel Harland Sanders in a series of ads beginning January 28. (That’s Reba above, along with her Colonel identity).

“I grew up with Kentucky Fried Chicken. It’s part of my story, and I’m so excited to now be part of theirs,” shares Reba. “I’ve held a lot of roles in my life – sort of like the Colonel himself – but this is certainly the most unique one yet.”

Winter Blonde

If you’re trying to figure out how to bring your blonde into the winter months, this is the perfect way. LeAnn Rimes shows off the perfect antique gold with hints of dark caramel and auburn. When the spring hits, the color is easily warmed up with more golden tones, and in summer, even bolder shades of blonde. It’s the perfect transition color.

LONDON, ENGLAND—Call it a blonde extravaganza with different shades of blonde, used in a fabulous assortment of ways! Yes, hairdressing legends Gary Hooker and Michael Young presented Schwarzkopf Professional’s brand new BlondeMe range to a standing-room only crowd at their recent show in the UK! Hooker and Young’s artistry and showmanship wowed the crowd in their stunning presentation of the new iconic BlondeMe collection on gorgeous models. From champagne to cool fusion to rose blush, honey marble, platinum purity and caramel glow, the looks showcased something for everyone. The London kickoff was followed by shows in Manchester, Glasgow and Dublin—making the color trends ones you’ll be seeing much more of! “Gary and Michael are the consummate professionals, their knowledge of the Schwarzkopf Professional collection, particularly BlondeMe, is outstanding and they share their passion for the brand and the success it has in their own salons with their teams and clients. The way they bring their personal message to audiences is incredibly inspiring,” said Stuart Hamid, general manager for Schwarzkopf Professional UK and Ireland. Judging from these images, Sophisticate’s couldn’t agree more!

Alternative Hair Show 2014

ROYAL ALBERT HALL — This past autumn the global event of the year, the Alternative Hair Show, continued its legacy by presenting an outstanding evening of inspirational creativity and fundraising in support of Fighting Leukemia. Spectacular presentations by 19 individual international hairdressing teams helped to raise over 181,000 pounds for the Alternative Hair Charitable Foundation. This brings the total raised to over 9 million pounds! Bringing to life the awesome outcome of the Fighting Leukemia cause were special guests Francesca Waite and her four-year-old son, Blue Tobin (now a leukemia survivor), who enjoyed the organization’s annual excursion to Disneyland Paris! Can you hear us cheering here at Sophisticate’s? Take a look at the evening right here…

Battle of the Strands 2014

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — The extreme hair, makeup and wardrobe competition appropriately dubbed the Battle of the Strands was one of the most over-the-top showdowns among some of the biggest names in the salon industry. The spectacular display of creative genius in hair, makeup, nails and wardrobe culminated this past autumn with a phenomenal display of beauty concepts as shown right here. Called the “Project Runway” of the beauty industry, the battles on stage featured different styling challenges. GKHair was an exclusive sponsor of the competition and the brand featured Dry Shampoo–a styling favorite at the event. Wow!!!!

Exclusive Photo Shoot

We’re always dazzled when we see Cheryl Burke heat up the dance floor on Dancing With The Stars. We paired the fierce dancing diva with Matrix’s Celebrity Hairstylist George Papanikolas to create some sizzling looks for Cheryl. Check out the looks and see what the fabulous star had to say about her mane moves in a behind-the-scenes look at our exclusive photo shoot. “I love changing up my hair,” shares Cheryl. “It’s something I do every couple of months, so I wasn’t nervous. I love coloring it, and I’m open to different hairstyles.” What was Cheryl’s favorite look? “[The more tousled hair] was my favorite look! I love it because I would love to be able to style my own hair like that like every single night when I go out,” she says. “George added some extensions just to make it more full and he created softer curls and teased it so it had that big-haired rocker-girl look.”

Shakira and Crest 3D White

Sultry singer and The Voice judge Shakira is known for her killer dance moves, booty-shaking songs, and now, her radiant smile! As the global spokesperson for 3D White, the Grammy-Award winning singer posed for the camera to show off her striking smile. Here, celeb hair stylist Kim Kimble tells us how he styled her gorgeous mane…

  • Shakira likes her hair to look effortless and natural—wavy, but not too perfect…She has beautiful thick hair.
  • First, I spritzed her hair with heat protectant and blow-dried with a round, boar bristle brush. Then, I waved her hair with a 1-1/2” curling iron. I finished the look with some shine serum.
  • For the updo, I took the hair and twisted it, then wrapped it up into a French roll. Next, I tucked the hair in with about six large hair pins.
  • For the naturally curly style, I wet her hair down using a moisturizing shampoo and moisturizing conditioner. Then, I applied leave-in conditioner and a curl crème product and diffused the hair. That’s her natural curl—her hair is very thick and very curly.

Action Shot Female - Copy[1]
How many of the following life events did you experience in the past few month? If you experienced at least one, you may have also noticed more hair in the shower drain. Stress can cause temporary bouts of hair loss, called Telogen Effluvium, and some women lose up to 70% of their hair in the months following a major stressor. Some stressors including going on or off birth control pills, getting sunburn on your scalp, losing weight, giving birth, having surgery, suffering from the flu, going through a big life-changing moment, taking anti-depressants, crash dieting, switching to vegetarian or vegan, being involved in a traumatic accident…and the list goes on.

Stress shedding is usually temporary but in women predisposed to hereditary hair loss, the hair won’t grow back on it’s own and may need help. The HairMax LaserComb is an at-home device with six FDA clearances and seven clinical studies backing its effectiveness. And, according to the manufacturer, It thickens hair density and fullness and improves scalp health. HairMax Minoxidil for Women is an FDA-approved topical treatment you can use for hereditary hair loss and can be used in conjunction with the LaserComb. Cindy’s Blow-Out

george&cindyOprah Winfrey opened up the “Oprah’s Lifeclass” studio to Cindy Crawford, making her the first ever guest teacher on the series. For her hosting duties, celebrity hairstylist George Gonzalez, owner of George The Salon, styled the star’s hair for the live episode filmed in Chicago on April 2nd. This is the second time George has done Cindy’s hair in Chicago.

“I made sure to round brush starting at the bottom to build weight,” explains Gonzalez about creating Cindy’s look. “Then, I finished the blow-out by styling the sections at the top to minimize volume. The result is soft and natural.”

The super stylist offers up great tips for how you can achieve a great blow-out…

♦ For a blow-out, women often put the dryer directly against the hair because they think that’s the way to get it straight. This why there is damage and frizz, especially when paired with a metal brush.

♦ The worst thing we can do is use old blow-dryers or not clean out their air vents. When lint or hair build up, air cannot flow through and the pressure goes down.

♦ If one part of your blow-out does not look good, spray it with water and redo it. Never keep going over it while the hair is dry; this will make it worse.

♦ A dusting of dry shampoo at your roots will really kick start the staying power of your blow-out.

♦  To further preserve your style, sweep tresses up and use large bobby pins to create loosely sculpted pin curls before you go to bed; 4-6 large sections will do the trick. When you release and shake out in the morning, you’ll feel like you just left your stylist’s chair.

Getting a short cut can be fearful for those who’ve kept it long for years. But once you’ve gotten over the fear(remember, it will grow back), book that appointment and voila! a new you. Before you enter that salon be armed! Bring a copy of your favorite magazine (yeah, that’s where we come in) and sticker several favorite short looks. Your beauty pro will review and tell you why or why not the cut you love may or may not work for you. Next it’s on to the actual cut and the style. When you’re hair is short you can play up your texture and let it stand out. Those pesky dead ends are long gone and your hair looks much healthier now. Ask your stylist what type of products you should use to help achieve your desired results. Styling short hair can be a bit tricky since too much product will create that horrible helmut-hair vibe, while a light touch can be fantastic for a sophisticated look like the one shown here from  the pros at Samuel Rocher Paris. Good luck and let us know how it went—Ms. New You!

Beauty Advice: March 31

For brightly colored strands or pastel tips, use soft chalk pastels from an art store. Twist each strand as you apply the chalk.

Beauty Advice: March 30

When putting your hair into a half-up, half-down style, use your eyebrows as a guide to make sure you get the proportions right.

Beauty Advice: March 29

Only blow-dry small sections of your hair at one time. Blow-drying hair sections more than one inch thick doesn’t allow heat to pass through.

Beauty Advice: March 28

To trim fringe, pull the section of hair down across your face, twist it and trim. Start by cutting a very small amount each time.

Beauty Advice: March 27

When shampooing, make sure you massage your scalp using the tips of your fingers in circular motions at least five times for a full cleanse.

Beauty Advice: March 26

Seal your hair cuticles by final rinsing with cold water once you’ve rinsed the conditioner out. This will give your hair more of a shine.

Beauty Advice: March 25

A bob with defined edges can give some body to limp, straight hair. Long layers around the face can add softness.

Beauty Advice: March 24

When choosing haircolor, take your lifestyle into consideration. The further you stray from your natural hue, the more often you will need to get touch-ups.

Beauty Advice: March 23

Layers are essential for getting glamour-girl hair. You want a cut with long, flow, graduated layers that start slightly lowers or higher than your cheekbones.

Beauty Advice: March 22

To avoid damaging hair while teasing, start at mid-shaft and push the comb down to the roots. Pull the comb out and repeat.

Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide will be working hard, at America’s Beauty Show,   this weekend and covering all that is hair! America’s Beauty Show has been held in Chicago for 90 years and is one of the oldest of it’s kind in our industry.  The well-attended extravaganza  is owned and produced by salon professionals and the members of Cosmetologists Chicago. We will be showcasing imagery from in and around the show in the upcoming week online and in a fabulous feature in an upcoming issue….your red-carpet pass! The amazing MATRIX Artistic Director,  Chrystofer Benson,  designed the beautiful look shown here that was showcased at last year’s show…can hardly wait to see what’s new!

Beauty Advice: March 21

Know your hair type: Hair is fine if a single strand is hard to see. Your mane is thick if it feels coarser.

Beauty Advice: March 20

For no-heat loose waves, set strands in pin curls and wrap hair with a silk scarf at night. Take them down the next morning.
