IS097-004Exposing your locks to the sizzling summer sun can result in serious strand damage, but you don’t need to break the bank to get your tresses back on track. Give your locks some T.L.C. with these 10 simple (and totally free!), D.I.Y. tips from mane maven Mario Russo, owner and lead stylist of Salon Mario Russo in Boston.

Take a dryer sheet (unscented!) and lightly rub on head to calm frizz. If you prefer, rub the dryer sheet on a brush first and then use the brush on your hair. Either will help to tame flyaways!

Another way to tame frizz and flyaways is to run your hands through your hair after you moisturize your body. The leftover moisturizer on your hands will be just enough to tame flyaways without making your coif greasy!

If you’re out of dryer sheets or prefer to keep it simple – spraying your favorite hairspray on a brush and then combing it through hair will also make strands stay in place without being stiff.

Feeling build up on your locks? A great at-home clarifying treatment is apple cider vinegar. Take 1 tablespoon and mix with water in a spray bottle. Apply to hair after shampooing and leave on for 5 minutes before rinsing it out.

Apply your styling products to damp hair 10 minutes BEFORE blow-drying. This will allow enough time for the product to absorb into your locks and do the work it’s supposed to do!

If you have an itchy or dry scalp, Vitamin E can help to ease the irritation. Using a tiny bit of oil from a capsule and applying it on the affected area, will relieve dryness and redness.

Need a quick shine fix? Before you step out of the shower, rinse your hair with ice-cold water. This cold water seals the cuticle and will make your hair instantly shinier! Perfect for a night out or special occasion where you want shiny locks.

Don’t towel dry! Many women put their damp hair in a towel as they get ready, but the friction from the towel can be a huge frizz creator. Instead, let your hair air dry for best non-frizz results.

Never leave the house with wet hair! You won’t necessarily catch a cold, but you could cause hair breakage from the chilly temps and wind.

Opt for a silk pillowcase to protect hair as you silk. Cotton pillowcases cause more friction equaling frizz and ridges/indents on hair. A silk pillowcase lets hair glide across it and will help prevent hair snagging and frizz.
