Sophisticate’s Blog:         Summer Runway Report

The only thing hotter than the soaring temperatures this summer is the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim in Miami. Flawless faces, showstopping bikinis and gorgeous curls graced the stage for the Luli Fama show and René Furtere styling products helped to bring out some sizzling-hot mane moves. Here, we have the all the behind-the-scenes hair scoop from celebrity hairstylist Jorge A. Briceno, owner and creative director for Eclipse Salon and Day Spa in Wellington, FL…

Screen shot 2013-08-05 at 2.07.47 PM“MY INSPIRATION came from Luli’s direction for the collection,” says Jorge. “Ocean waves, a tropical paradise, very natural and very beachy. We wanted very soft waves, beach-looking waves— so it was a very soft, romantic, sexy look.”

BECAUSE THE FINISHED LOOK is smoother at the crown with waves falling to the shoulders, first, hair is sectioned off at the crown and clipped, leaving the rest free. For models with softer, finer hair that needs more texture, I start by spraying dry shampoo at the roots.

TO PREP THE LOOSE HAIR for heat styling on models with medium to thick frizzy hair, I take a section, spray it with René Furterer LISSEA thermal protecting smoothing spray and massage the spray into the section. This protects hair from the high heat of the curling iron. It also softens and smoothes thick, unruly hair. Next, I give hair another spritz and brush through the section. For those models with fine, weightless hair, I apply a volumizing conditioning spray to help hold the waves and curls to maintain the soft, wavy style.

Screen shot 205 at 2.07.47 PMNEXT, I WIND the section around the barrel of a large curling iron. To create a natural look, I alternate between using a curling iron with a 1 and 1/2 inch barrel and a 2” barrel. After twirling the curling iron toward the head, it’s held in place for a few seconds to allow the heat to lock in the curl. For models with softer, finer hair, I take the curled section, gently twist it into a big, loose pin-curl and pin into place—this helps to set the curl as the models are sent to makeup.

AFTER RELEASING THE CURL, I give it a light misting with René Furterer Vegetal Finishing Spray for a hold that still allows hair to move freely and leaves waves touchable. For incredible shine I spritz with glossing spray. After spraying it on curls I break up the curl with my hands to get loose, beachy waves.

LASTLY, I rub a little styling wax on the palm of one hand, and then use it as a palette to lightly apply the wax with my fingertips at the very end of the curls. This creates definition and separation between the waves.
