Sophisticate’s Blog:         Hairdressers Give Back!

The University of Georgia’s Chi Phi Fraternity (Eta Chapter) was looking for a way to give back to their community and honor the successful completion of their new fraternity house. The 120 brothers wanted to host an event that would put them “a cut above” so they initiated the “Chi Phi Cut-A-Thon,” an inaugural charity even to benefit the Athens Chapter of the American Red Cross (with emphasis on assisting the victims of Hurricane Sandy).

UGA senior, Jesse Codner, the chapter’s secretary and one of the event’s organizers, is the son of celebrity hairstylist Candy Shaw Codner, owner of Atlanta’s Jamison Shaw Hairdressers. “I come from a 50 year lineage of hairdressers and as a group [of] hairdressers, [we] just love giving back,” says Candy. “Our goal was to rely on the skilled hands and talent of hairdressers to reach out through this event and touch the lives of those affected by disaster.”

To host the event, the Chi Phi’s transformed their new dining room into Athens’ “toniest” temporary hair salon, complete with styling stations and a “bobbing for apples” dunk tank to wet the men’s hair in preparation for the cuts. Luckily for the women, the stylists used spray bottles! Sixteen stylists from Atlanta’s Jamison Shaw Hairdressers volunteered their time and traveled to Athens to help make the event possible.

With the involvement of the college’s entire Greek system and the local population, in the span of just three hours the “Chi Phi Salon” performed over 85 haircuts (50 men and 35 women) raising more than $5,000 between the proceeds of the event, raffle ticket sales and alumni and parent contributions. The chapter raised enough money to fully restore the homes of 12 families who experienced the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.

To honor the chapter’s charitable work, the “Chi Phi Cut-A-Thon” received two prestigious awards. The event placed third in the first-annual Wella “Supports Your Cause” Charity Challenge and first place in the 2013 UGA Red Cross “Heroes Challenge.” As third prize winners in the Wella “Supports Your Cause” Charity Challenge, Wella generously donated an additional $1,000 to the Athens Red Cross, raising the total amount raised to more than $6,000.
