Runway To Reality: Your How-To!

“I am always looking for new ways to put up hair,” says Kevin Murphy. “I found sewing the hair to be much more effective than using pins. Plus, it gives the hair a more contemporary look and a firmer hold.” That’s Kevin and a model at Fashion Week, showing off the nymph look.

Kevin Murphy, Master Stylist and Founder of Kevin.Murphy, has created the “nymph look,” his take on the hottest style for the coming season. “I was inspired by Roman garden nymphs and the avant-garde work of American photographer Jock Sturges,” explains Murphy. The look features a side part, soft waves to frame the face and modern braids around the head that are secured with a bun.

Murphy incorporated two of the biggest hair trends right now—braids and buns—into the style, giving them a fresh take by adding soft texture to the hair. And to secure the look? Forget elastic bands and bobby pins—he sewed the silhouette! (Check out the Kevin.Murphy Sewing.Kit, available at KevinMurphy.com.au). His pretty nymph look has become popular in Australia, and was featured in Australian Fashion Week.

Here are Murphy’s steps to create the nymph look:

*Separate the hair by parting horizontally across the head from ear to ear at the crown of the head. Smooth the back section of hair down and secure it with a ponytail at the nape of the neck using linen thread and a needle.

*Separate the hair in the ponytail in two and twist each section of hair then rope the two twists around one another. Continue twisting roped hair until the hair twists around itself and creates a knot. Secure the knot to the nape using needle and thread.

*Separate the front section of hair in two by creating a side part. Using a medium size curling iron take small sections of the hair and wrap them around the curling iron away from the face, leaving the ends out. Curl all of the hair in the two front sections.

*Loosely French braid each front section around the hairline. Secure by sewing the hair in place. As you sew, pull some of the sections of the hair out to loosen and create a wispy braid.

*Secure the ends of the braid around the knot at the back with needle and thread. Mist a holding spray over hair for light hold.

See how gorgeous you can be? And all it takes is a little needle and thread…
