Desperate Housewives

There’s nothing surprising about having secrets on Wisteria Lane. One tidbit fans are dying to know: How on earth do the Desperate Housewives women get their ultra-glam looks? Lucky for us, hair department head Gabor Heiligenberg dishes on how he does it!

HAIR: “She’s back to the Gabby we all know and love with super-long hair with lots of volume,” asserts the mane expert.

PRO TIP: “I’m putting mousse in Eva’s hair and scrunching texture into it,” the pro details. “Then I use a large-barrel curling iron to twist and define the curls throughout.”

HAIR: “She basically fluctuates between wavy and straight hairstyles—just simple, sleek and sexy,” the mane pro describes.

PRO TIP: Stylist Heiligenberg preps damp strands with root lift before blowing out with a round brush. “For a wavier look, I pin the hair in tighter curls as it cools,” reveals the pro.

HAIR: It’s all about big, sexy body on this hot housewife! “Dana has very voluptuous, full curls,” Heiligenberg describes.

PRO TIP: “I pin the hair as I’m blowing it into relatively tight curls that sit almost like a roller-set,” the pro explains.

HAIR: “Felicity’s character has a really sophisticated hairstyle,” notes Heiligenberg.

PRO TIP: Building body is key. “I use root lift at the crown on wet hair,” details the mane man. “Then I overdirect the hair with lots of heat at the base.”

HAIR: To match the adventurous side of Marcia’s character, Heiligenberg creates a more carefree mane design. “She’s gone much softer and sexier,” says the hair pro.

PRO TIP: “Letting Marcia sit in hot rollers really gives her hair that bouncy, loose wave,” the stylist reveals.

Reba McEntire. I love her hairstyle with all of the layers. Would like a nice picture of her in your magazine to bring to my hairdresser.

  3. Linda says:

Jaclyn Smith she still has beautiful hair and she is 62 and looks fabulous!!I want her haircut instructions.

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Linda:

Jaclyn does have beautiful and, at times, enhances her look with wigs! As far as her hair–her hairstylist Jose Eber told us that he cuts her hair in layers to frame her face. He also keeps her bangs ‘invisible’ so she can wear them sideswept or concealed. Jaclyn likes to wear her hair longer. Her haircolor is highlighted with a golden blonde to mix with her light chestnut brown color. The highlights are scattered for a more natural look. Jaclyn does use a heavy, deep conditioner at least once a month and prefers not to wash her hair every day. Hope this helps!

  4. Carissa says:

Hi, I’m planning on getting my hair cut and recoloured at a salon within the next few months. I’m naturally a red head and I don’t mean the copper colour that most reds have….I have really DARK yet brightly coloured red hair, but I’ve been dying it black the past few years. Is it possible for a stylist to strip the black out and dye it back to my natural colour?

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hello, Carissa!
Yes, it is possible. But remember, it may take one, two or even three visits for your stylist to remove the color and keep your hair nice and healthy. It is definitely going to take some transition time for this. Black and dark brown pigments are among the strongest and hardest to remove while maintaining the health and integrity of the hair and scalp. Ask your stylist if you should be using conditioning or restructure treatments prior to your color removal, and be sure to discuss the copper issues with your stylist. Removing color is not magic. It takes time, effort and a lot of thought from your stylist as you move from one color into another. Be sure when going red that your stylist avoids golds in the color. Ask him or her to look at cooler color options for you so that you avoid the warmth of golds.

  7. Sydney says:

Hi,my hair is a little below my shoulders and it is thick and curly, but i can do anything with my hair. Everytime I look at a magazine every star has long hair!!! I want my hair really long before Febuary 20. Do you have any suggestions on how to get it really long fast?

    • (anymous) says:

  8. Leanne says:

In the last months issue in the celebrity makeover bonus section there is a photo of singer Martina McBride sprting long hair. I would love to replicate the rich red/brown color she has. Can you tell me what color/level to ask my stylist for? Thanks!

  9. Stacy says:

About a month or two ago, i bought the nov/dec 2009 issue of sophisticate’s. Everytime I look through it, I’m drawn to the same picture everytime, and thats the picture of Chelsea Staub! I love her blonde waves, and her deep parted bangs. At the back of the issue I just saw the caption that says “see the results on Sophisticate’s website!” I was really hoping I could find it, but I can’t anywhere. It would be really nice if you could post the pictures and how to style hair like hers. Thank you so much!

    Stacy L.

    THANK YOU

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Selena:

      We are checking into!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hi Selena/Karine:
A beautiful, romantic look indeed. Have you asked your salon professional about color services that might be right for you? Rich chocolate browns (Level 3 or 4) help make great color choices to imitate Selena’s haircolor.

Take a look at bang options or sideswept bangs as well. Be sure your stylist is great with layering, and avoid razor-cutting for softer looks. I hope this helps.

  12. Kim Rogan Weitzel says:

Lisa Rinna –What is the name of her cut?

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

I call it a short layered crop with a longer fringed bang.

      She always looks amazing!
