READY TO ROCK
With one platinum-selling single already under her belt, Christina Perri is set for stardom. But the soulful chanteuse’s future wasn’t always so bright. After moving to Los Angeles at 19, Christina decided to self-promote through YouTube—regularly posting videos of herself singing her original compositions, along with some covers. Eventually, her song “Tragedy” caught the ear of Bill Silva Management. The rest? Her single “Jar of Hearts” was featured on a 2010 episode of So You Think You Can Dance—catapulting the singer to platinum status. Sophisticate’s sat down with Christina to talk about her new-found fame, her gorgeous look and, of course, her hair!

How has your life changed since “Jar of Hearts’ was performed on So You Think You Can Dance?
My entire life changed in one night! I was a waitress the day before, and the day after, I was a recording artist. It was like Cinderella! I began living my dream: making music, singing my songs for people, going to rad events and traveling the whole world. I feel like the luckiest girl on the planet everyday!
What does your album, lovestrong., mean to you?
It is everything I am—inside and out. I wrote all the songs over the past 10 years, and I finally feel over my own hurdles and heartbreaks. I feel so honored to reach other people too. I couldn’t be more proud of the album or more excited to play it for everyone in the world!
What’s your favorite way to wear your hair?
My favorite casual style is just air-dried, messy and down. My favorite fancy style is big, messy, loose curls—like I just woke up that way. To get that look, I actually either do nothing, or I use a curling iron.

As the daughter of hairstylists, you must know quite a bit about hair. What is your best hairstyling or haircare secret?
I think I’m good with products. I feel like there are billions, but I know the differences between them all because I practically grew up in a salon! At the end of the day, it’s simple: never over do it!
What are some of your must-have haircare products?
My must-haves are Bumble and bumble Shampoo and Conditioner—not just because they are great products, but all because of the smell! I also love Sebastian hairspray. I feel like I’ve tried them all, and classic Sebastian hairspray is where I always end up. Also, pre-ironing sprays really help if you use a flat iron. I really like CHI brand—plus a really good iron, like Babyliss.
How would you describe your makeup style?
I’m not the biggest makeup fan unless I’m going to an event. I love a fresh face over a fake face, so I keep it really simple everyday with some blush, shimmer and mascara. For events, I do a little bit of black eyeliner, some mascara and lipstick.
