Inspired by the Old Hollywood glam of the 1920s, this beautifully styled crop features a chic side part and fabulous waves. The key to this sleek style includes blow-drying with a round brush and creating the look with a ceramic flat iron. Before styling, part hair at one side. Form waves using the flat iron and top off the look with a bit of shine spray for a glossy finish.

    hi
my hair is naturally dirty blond, but whenever i dye my hair it always seems to turn a reddish hue after and when i was a baby i used to have reddish hues in my hair. Should i dye my hair red? or should i go light brown with blond streaks?

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Frank and Belinda Gambuzza says:

      Hi, Colleen!
Mother nature always gets it right! You can generally color your hair to the same color you had as a child. We suggest you find some old photos of yourself and take them to your colorist. Your complexion will love you for it.

  2. maria says:

    HI,

I have thick brown wavy hair and an oval face? What haircut do you think will look good on me?

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Frank & Belinda Gambuzza says:

      Hi, Maria!
With an oval face shape, you can wear almost any haircut. You want long, swoopy bangs? Go for it! You want layers? Do it! There’s really no wrong haircut for you. Do remember: the shorter you go, the thicker your hair will get. So if it’s thick now, you may want to consider leaving it a little longer.

  3. A. andrea says:

i have super puffy curly hair, and i just cut it this week because i cant deal with it any more. I’m tired of my big puffy hair!!! i wish that i could have subtle soft easy waves like kara dioguardi in your magazine. im thinking of getting it relaxed, but i just wish that i could do something to get these soft easy waves permanent. i talked to my hair stylist but he doesn’t really understand me :( my hair is up to my shoulders but when i straightened it, it goes all the way to my chest, and it’s brown! Help ME!!!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hi, A. Andrea!
I would suggest a mild Keratin straightening treatment rather than a permanent relaxer. This is a good “test run” for clients who have never had one done and the treatment gradually fades out over time. When you have long curly hair, you never really get to enjoy the length.

  4. Danielle says:

I have naturally straight hair and i try to curl/wave it but it comes out like 1 hour after i curl/wave it. What can i do to change that?

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hi, Danielle!
Naturally straight hair can be tricky to work with, but once you master the art of your canvas there’s no stopping the magic. Hot rollers work wonders on straight hair because they are applied when hot, and the hair cools down around them to keep its shape for a longer period of time. Once you remove the hot rollers, turn your hair upside down and spray sections underneath for control and support. Scrunch through and flip your hair back over. This will give you a lot of volume and support. The biggest trick to keeping the hold is using a bit of hairspray. Also, depending on your hair type, you might also try a body wave for longer lasting results.

  6. Zoey McCusker says:

Hey! I love my hair but I’ve had the same cut for two years. I really want to do something different other than the layers I have without cutting off my length. Any suggestions?

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Zoey:

Since we don’t have too much info on your look, your best bet is to pickup our March 2010 issue at newsstands featuring the lovely Kristen Bell. We have hundreds of new cuts and colors to select from. If you can, find hairstyles you like, clip out and take to your salon and ask which cut your stylist would look best on you! Good luck and happy hair!

  7. Allyssa says:

Hi. My Hair Is Naturally Very Wavy, Its Thick, And Very Long [Middle Of My Back]. People Love It, But It Can Get Out Of Control Sometimes. Hahh. I Straighten It Almost EveryDay. On Rare Occasions I Wear It Natural. I’d Like To Wear My Hair Natural More Often Without Worrying About Frizz Or Anything. I Have A Frizz Control Product [Garnier Fructis Style, Brilliant Shine.] But It Makes My Hair Flat. Please Help??

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Daniel Keane (see Expert Panel at right) says:

I have a lot curly haired clients and the biggest thing that I find that is critical for taming frizziness is moisture and a bit of weight. I find that cocktailing products together works far better than just using one kind. Because of the variety of textures (fine to coarse) that people have, experimentation with products that combine the traits of moisture and weight is the best approach. I really like to combine the Pure Fluid Experience with the Pure Glaze from the Purity line for a great starting point. I then finish with the Pure Water drops as the hair begins to dry and as the hair needs a refresher throughout the day.

    • Allyssa says:

Yayyy.!! Thank You Lots. I Will Try It Out. ^-^

  8. Sylvia says:

I am 25 years old and I have a hair appointment this wednesday to have my hair cut but the problem is I don’t know how to have it cut that will look good with my face shape. I have sorta an oval shaped face with medium to long hair in length. I have a perm with medium curls. I’m having it cut because the length and heaviness of my hair is pulling my perm at the roots causing it to want to come out. I don’t want that cause I love my curls! I need to know of a shorter hair style that will look good with my face shape and curls. Please help!
    Thanks, Sylvia

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hi Sylvia:
The problem you may have cutting your hair shorter is that you DO have a perm. So if you cut 3-4 inches off the overall length, at some point the regrowth is going to be more obvious. Keeping a slightly longer look may give you more flexibility in your style for now until you have enough regrowth to completely cut the permed hair away.

I recommend soft layering, smoothing through the front, and scrunching the back with a styling cream or serum. This will give you a soft look around the face-line, yet still allow you to have a little fun with the permed hair. Just because you have your hair permed doesn’t mean you’re stuck with just that one permed look. There’s so much you can do with permed hair. Just be sure you are using hair care appropriate for your hair type, as prescribed by your salon professional, and that you’re using professional styling tools for your hair.

Also, because you do have a perm, you can also use curling irons to enhance the curl, create different curl patterns, and so much more. Believe it or not, you can get hundreds of styles out of hair that’s permed. Oval-shaped faces can pull off many different kinds of looks so have a little fun with it until you are ready to completely cut the permed hair off. The regrowth stages can be quite tricky. Just be patient.

  9. Stephanie says:

Hello, I have mid-back length hair that is thick. Every time I curl my hair (usually with rollers since a iron doesn’t work well with my hair), the curls look good but sadly only last less than half a day. They sorta stretch themselves out and unwind. Is there any solution for this and for hard-to-style hair?

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Stephanie, Sylvia:

Thank you for writing. We’ll check our experts and be back in a bit!

      Happy New Year!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hi Stephanie:
Thank you for reading Sophisticates Hairstyle Guide. This is truly the place to turn for all those beauty questions and I’m glad to help you out here. Yes, longer hair types may not hold the curl as long. Are you using professional products (tools and styling products?). I would recommend setting up a styling session with your hairstylist to have them walk you through some of these tips.

I recommend curling the hair with your curling iron as you do (be sure to protect hair with a thermal styling spray), and when the hair is warm from the curling iron, wrap it around your fingers to create a barrel curl and clip the barrel curl to the scalp area. Do this for the entire head and allow curls to cool for 15-20 minutes; this helps them keep their shape longer. It’s sort of like pouring candle wax–when it’s hot, you pour the wax into the mold and it cools down and holds its shape.

Once you remove the barrel curls after they have cooled, turn your head upside down and spray from underneath while scrunching hairspray through the ends. This helps give support from underneath which is often where curl starts falling out first. Support the curl from underneath first and let us know how you do.

  10. Felicity says:

I have straight black hair that goes past my shoulders and have tan skin, my face is diamond shape would full curls look good on me or just curls at the ends?

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Felicity:

We’re checking with our experts and will be back…stay tuned!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hello Felicity:
First of all, thank you for reading Sophisticates Hairstyle Guide which I’ve found to be an amazing source for all your beauty needs and questions.

I suggest keeping the curls loose and tousled so that they fall softly around the neck and shoulders. Even though I’m not that big on “hair rules,” tighter curls can make your face look wider. Since you described your face as being diamond shaped (wider in the middle), offset the look by keeping the curls loose, tousled and care-free for a fun & bouncy look. This can be done by using a large barrel curling iron (be sure to use thermal protecting spray), and lock in place with a light hold spray for a more natural look when done. Thanks for reading.

  12. Amanda says:

OK so I have a question, my hair is baby fine and I wanna curl it, just loose curls and I don’t wanna look like Annie. My hair is about jaw length all around and I know it will be hard to curl, but I wanna do something different any advice?

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Amanda:

We’ll check our experts and have an answer for you in a few days!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Belinda and Frank Gambuzza (see Expert Panel at right) says:

      Hi Amanda:
The first step to your curl success begins with the blow-dry. First, shampoo and condition your hair with a great weightless shampoo like Kerastase Volumactive Shampoo, which will help support the curls. Next, apply a volume styling product. Blow-dry your hair upside down, creating lift at the root area. Once your hair is completely dry use a setting spray such as Shu Uemura Iron Design, and a curling iron to create long lasting, shiny, bouncy curls.

  13. athena says:

my hair is short, but i want it to grow really long, fast, hor can i do this?

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi Athena!
There is no magic secret for growing hair really long, really fast. What you can do is keep it healthy so it is in optimal condition to grow. Get regular trims–cutting off potential split ends will make hair healthier so it won’t break. Condition well and stay away from too much heat styling. Tell your stylist what your ultimate goal is, so you can both create a plan to make the transition easy when going from short to long. If you’re truly in a hurry, you might also want to explore extensions, either temporary clip-ins or more permanent professionally attached ones. Our best advice, though, is simply to be patient!

  14. Tammy says:

I have shoulder length baby fine hair. What would be the best cut for my hair? Everyone wants to layer it but i just dont know. It has no body and is straight. I need help!!!!

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Tammy:

We’re checking with our experts and will be back this week.

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Daniel Keane (see Expert Panel at right) says:

      Hi Tammy:
In my experience, super fine hair should be cut a bit shorter to maximize the volume. Depending on your facial shape and features I would lean toward something in a soft bob. Today’s graduated bobs can be very flattering and make the most of fine hair. The only layering I would suggest would be internal (hidden) layers. Ask your stylist if they can do this.

  15. Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Frank & Belinda Gambuzza (see Expert Panel at right) says:

    Hi Ashley Marie:
Kerastase Oleo Slim is a product that has three different oils in it. It will calm your hair, help control the frizz and will also block out the humidity. Also, if you want to wear your hair curly, you may need to use Kerastase Double Force. This is a hairspray, but it helps to hold the curls as it dries and it won’t feel stiff once your hair is dry.

    Directions:
    1. When the hair is wet, flip your head upside down.
    2. Put a pea size amount of Kerastase Oleo Slim in your hands.
    3. Scrunch into your ends and work it into the rest.
    4. Flip your hair back over and get the hair going into the direction that you want it to go in.
    5. While wet, lift and spray your hair all over with the BioEssence Volumizer Spray.
    6. Either air dry or diffuse the hair until dry.
    7. Do not play with the hair once you get your products on. The more you play with it, the more it breaks apart the curl and the frizzier it will be.
