Whether she’s on screen or the red carpet, Katherine McNamara always looks amazing. Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide had to find out more about this gorgeous girl, and Katherine did not disappoint! Here, in an exclusive interview, the star tells us all about her gorgeous hair, favorite beauty products and more.
Tell us about your character on Happyland.
I love Harper! She’s a fun, flamboyant girl who loves to live life as it comes to her. She’s very passionate, headstrong and extremely boy-crazy, which gets her into a lot of trouble. She doesn’t always make the right choice, but she tries to make it right in the end.
What’s the best thing about working on your show?
The best thing about working on my show is the cast. We have the best time together. From day one, we’ve been a family. It’s been a really great experience. I couldn’t think of a better group of people that I would want to share this experience with.
We love your hair! What’s your favorite hairstyle?
My favorite hairstyle is beautiful, wavy curls. Ever since I was little, I’ve wanted curly hair. I used to run around the house playing dress up with foam rollers in my hair because all I wanted was for my hair to be curly all the time. And it’s still like that to this day!
How long does it take to curl your hair?
At this point I’ve found a very great curling iron that works well with my hair and I have a system down to where it takes me maybe 15 minutes to half an hour to get it really curly. If I want to do a quick curl to go out to lunch with friends, it takes maybe 10 minutes.
Does your haircolor require a lot of upkeep?
No. Occasionally they’ll put a gloss on my hair to buff the color up and make my strawberry blonde a little brighter so it will pick up more on camera. But my hair is pretty au natural.
Do you have a go-to hairstyle for formal events?
Usually I do a wavy, glam smooth curl. It depends on the dress. I really let the fashion inspire the hairstyle. Each dress has its own personality and its own look. Sometimes I’ll put in a ponytail, sometimes I’ll do a bun, other times I’ll wear it stick-straight because sometimes that adds a nice edge to it. I love playing with my hair and doing something different.
What’s in your hair tool/product drawer?
Oribe and Chi, their irons are just fabulous. Also, Paul Mitchell…their working spray is a dreamboat!
How do you keep your hair healthy?
I make sure to really take care of it. I brush it really well, but not too much. I make sure to condition and I put a hair mask on it occasionally. My hair has so much heat styling on it, between photo shoots and being on set and what I do in my personal life, and it takes a lot of heat, so it’s good to keep deep-conditioning it.
What’s the best beauty tip you’ve ever received?
Less is more. And as far as tips to your skin looking good, drink water. A lot of people don’t think about it, but one of the best things you can do for your skin and complexion is to just stay hydrated and eat healthy.
What are your favorite skincare products?
The Chanel skincare line is absolutely amazing! I love their milky cleanser, it’s probably my favorite thing. It’s gentle enough, but it actually cleans your skin and it has a moisturizing element as well. I literally could not live without it.
How would you describe your overall fashion style?
I would say it’s very classic, but with an edge. I love taking classic silhouettes or pieces and throwing something edgy, new and different with it that adds a bit of flair and personality. If I have a dress with a classic silhouette, I look for it in a fun pattern or a bright color. Or if I’m wearing a little black dress, I throw an edgy shoe with it.
Do you have any beauty icons?
Audrey Hepburn. She’s the epitome of elegance and class. I also like Kate Middleton because she’s classically beautiful.
When do you feel the most beautiful?
I feel the most beautiful when I’m surrounded by people I love, and I’m laughing and having a good time There’s nothing that makes a person feel better than being surrounded by loved ones and enjoying themselves. The most beautiful thing you can wear is a smile.
