Find out whether you’re a heart, oval, round or square because there’s a perfect (and not so perfect) way to wear your hair. It’s time to flaunt those features, pretty girl…
Your face shape: OVAL/LONG

You fall into this category if the widths of your brow, cheekbones and jaw are almost equal, and you have a gently rounded hairline.
FAMOUS FACES
Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Alba
YOUR SUPER SNIP
“This is the most versatile face shape. You can pull off almost any look—short or long, straight or wavy,” explains celebrity stylist Riccardo Maggiore of Riccardo Maggirore Salon in New York City. “Sophisticated bobs, bangs and long, beachy waves are especially flattering.”
Your face shape: ROUND

Your hairline and chin are rounded, and your face is nearly as wide as it is long.
FAMOUS FACES
Fergie and Drew Barrymore
YOUR SUPER SNIP
Try cuts that fall just below the chin. “Soft layers are great because they’ll make your face appear slimmer and tend to remove bulk from the sides,” shares celebrity stylist Riccardo Maggiore of Riccardo Maggirore Salon in New York City. “Bangs are flattering, too, but keep them long or sideswept.”
Your face shape: SQUARE

If you have a strong, straight jawline and an equally straight hairline, and the length of your face is almost equal to its width, you’re a square face type.
FAMOUS FACES
Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek Pinault
YOUR SUPER SNIP
The key to your best style is a cut that softens your angular jaw and forehead. “Soft, long layers around the face with a long, sideswept bang work fantastically,” notes hair pro Benjamin Mohapi, director of the Galvin Benjamin Salon Group. Are you more of a cropped cutie? “You can also get away with a short, spikey cut,” says celebrity stylist Riccardo Maggiore of Riccardo Maggirore Salon in New York City.
Your face shape: HEART/DIAMOND

This is you if you’re face is wide at the brow and near the hairline but especially narrow at the jaw.
FAMOUS FACES
Kim Kardashian and Reese Witherspoon
YOUR SUPER SNIP
The goal is to draw attention to your eyes and cheekbones. “Brow-grazing fringe, sideswept bangs, a strong part and hair that falls at or below your jawline will look amazing,” comments celebrity stylist Riccardo Maggiore of Riccardo Maggirore Salon in New York City. “If you want a short cut, keep top layers soft and long. If you are opting for a longer look, go for long layers that graze your cheekbones.”

Hi, I was wondering what the best kind of hair would be for a girl who has a round face and thick frizzy hair. I can’t cut it too short or get bangs because my hair will poof up really badly! Any suggestions?
hi,i have a heartshaped face.thin shoulder length hair.big forhead,wears spects.and i have those baby hair in d front.what would b d best hair style?wil a fringe do?want it look messy?
You should experiment Emma with styling your hair different ways with your glasses on. Since frames change; your bangs will as well. Next step? Check a trusted stylist!
Im not sure what face shape i have. I know its not a oval. I have thin hair and dont look good with blont fringe. My hair is very strait. I have angled hair from where im groing out a bad haircut. The under layer comes to about my shoulders. I like that length. I have to get a hair cut. I want somthing edgy but not to short. Do you have any suggestions? I would like to have long layard side bangs i that helps.
Hi Emily,
We think you’ll really love the feature in the August issue of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide on sale now…called “50 Best Celebrity Looks.” A lot of the stars gracing these pages have long layers (and side bangs), and these styles are so on-trend.
Umm i have a round face and long hair. I love Selena Gomez’s hair as like a shoulder length bob and i want to cut my hair like that. But im scared it may not look as good because my hair is thin yet hers is very thick. What should I do???
Hi Megan,
Try a haircut that falls just below the chin (like Selena Gomez’s bob!), but keep in mind that the addition of soft layers add dimension and make your face appear slimmer.
Hi, I have been looking .for some great hairstyles to choose from and can’t find the right one(s) to try. You see I am very overweight. Used to have a heart shaped face when I was thin, but now being fat my face and neck are fat too. I can’t find overweight celbrities or pics with great hair, because they just don’t show them. I can’t see myself in any of the plus size models because I’m sorry but size 12 or 14 is not really fat anymore. Maybe in the model world. Can you pleas do a special segment in your mag and online sometimes. Seasonally if not regularly for us chubbies who want to look good and would like to see ourselves in the models and hairstyles that would look great on us. I’m tired of the wrong hair it’s or giving up and tying it back in a bun. I want to see, fun, sassy, sexy, sophisticated as well as funky and ultra modern . Us big girls come in all styles and all walks of life. Please!!!!!! <3
Thanks for the suggestion, Orilady. There are a lot of hairstyles featured in the March issue that are great for women with a round face. Here is some advice from celebrity stylist Riccardo Maggiore: “Soft layers are great because they’ll make your face appear slimmer and remove bulk from the sides. Bangs are flattering, too, but keep them long or sideswept.”
What as far as cut can I do since I’m brunette with light brown eyes and and I have straight, fine, limp, maybe thin hair just past my shoulders at present. I always look at the hairstyles of Angelina Jolie like in Salt and Girl Interrupted and Kristen Stewart in Twilight and Anna Paquin in True Blood and Sharon Case recently on The Young and the Restless and wish I had those styles. I have been trying blonder hair and also darker brown instead of my own medium to light brown. One stylist said blunt cut or one length no layers or texture is best for my hair type. I have been told that my face is similar to Wynona Ryder and Mary Louise Parker.

I work at the salon . I need Guide for Bade Fade.

I have a round shape face and long hair. I was thinking of going to go with the Kim kardashian hair style. I know we have different face shapes but I was wondering if I could pull it off. If so what so I ask for when I go to the salon to get my hair done? Anything different or just the Kim kardashian hair?
Hi, Lauren!
Check out the description above under “Your face shape: ROUND.” This will help give you an idea of what you can tell your hairstylist aside from, “I want Kim Kardashian hair.” You may want to ask for soft layers or a long fringe.
I have a round face and thick, medium-length hair. I was wondering what would be some good hairstyles for my face shape that are quick and easy to take care of, and doesn’t get rid of too much length in my hair?
Hi, Ashton!

Hi, I was wondering since I have a wide forehead what would look best with my face shape since it’s more like an oval. I know bangs would work but I get tired of having to style them or pin them up everyday. what would be a good alternative?
Hi, Sam!
You’re in luck! Those with an oval face shape can wear almost any style. If you don’t want the hassle of bangs, try wearing clip-in bangs! This way, you can put them in and take them out whenever you feel it’s a fun fringe kind of day.
Don’t forget to check out our October issue on sale now—featuring Selena Gomez on the cover. We have a special article on The Best Cut For Your Face Shape!
Hi,
It’s summer and I have wanted a new haircut for a long time since I have had long hair for years. The problem I have is my face is round and I just don’t know what would be right for me. The style i really like is the one that Emma Watson is sporting right now, but with my wavy thick hair I don’t know if i could pull it off. Any advice?
Hi, Vicky!
Check out our October issue that goes on sale the first week in August; we have a special illustrated guide to the best cut for your face shape—you’ll love!
Hi!
I can never quite decide between the oval or heart shaped face but always leaning more towards oval. A couple of months ago I went from pretty long to a chin length bob-sort of like one of Kimberly Caldwell’s-and it looked great. Now I’m tempted to go even shorter to a mid-length pixie cut and found one that I really like. One problem, the hairstyle shows a lot of volume with it and I have a hard time getting my hair to do anything other than straighten. Any suggestions on how to fix that for thick, semi-wavy hair?
Hi, Taylor!
Getting layers helps to remove some of the bulk from your thick hair. One of things you can do is take the picture with you when you go to get your haircut and ask the stylist for pointers on how to style that particular haircut. Ask questions and get informed before you make the “big chop.”
hi!
it seems as if i don’t fit any of the face shapes you described.. i think it’s somewhat like triangle shaped. my jaw line and cheekbone are relatively wider than the forehead. i have a fine, straight hair (no complaints there..). i love short hairstyle much more than long ones, so i wanted to know if you can explain me what short hairdo will suits me the best
tahnk you
Hi, Meital!
We’re working on an answer for you—visit soon!
Hi, Meital!
You have a couple of options. Try a short haircut with more width and height through the top and tapering down through the sides. Another option is a short, layered bob that would sit between the cheek bone and jaw line. Either haircut would give more balance to your face shape.
WTF!! what the hell are you talking about?! You guys only limit urselfz, but I have a circle face and I have always had super long hair. a guy even asked me out two weeks ago and described me as “as hot as Taylor Laughtner”
Hi, Carmen!
The suggestions you see above are just a few of the options you have when it comes to styling for your face shape. Keep an eye out for each issue of Sophisticate’s for thousands of style ideas.
A guy described you as “as hot” as another guy and you’re still going out with him?
Hi
I have a round face and thick curly hair, I want a haircut that would really go great with my curls. I would like layers and bangs but im not sure if it goes with my hair, what style would you recommend for my type of hair?
Hi, Crystal!
Asking your stylist for layers will help take away some of the bulk of your thick curly hair. Check out our exclusive interview with Kimberly Perry of the hot country group The Band Perry, featured in the June/July issue of Sophisticate’s. She’s rocking naturally curly hair and a subtle side bang!
Hi
I was wondering what hair cut would look good on a turnip shaped head. You see, I wear really big glasses that look really ugly on me turnip head and i’m really short. people always make fun of me? i need a good hair cut. any ideas?
Hi, Brooklynn!
It sounds like your face shape is similar to actress Reese Witherspoon! Try a deep side part and keep layers soft and long so they graze your jawline. You may want to avoid one-length cuts and a center part as this style may elongate your face too much.
Hi
Was wondering if you have any advice for women with dermatitis of the scalp who want great hair cuts without losing their hair? I also have fine hair and have not colored my hair in a while in case of a break out. But would like to try if I can do it without touching my scalp or would you advise against coloring?
Thank you!
Will check with our experts and be back soon…keep checking in!
Hi, Emma!
Fine hair is typically going to look stronger and healthier if the length is at the top of the shoulders as opposed to leaving it longer. This length will also give you more volume possibility and provide better coverage for the dermatitis of the scalp. When it comes to haircolor, look for product that doesn’t contain ammonia, as it could aggravate the dermatitis. However, you may want to consult a salon professional and your doctor before applying anything to your scalp.
Hi!
I have long V- shape hair and scared to get a haircut because of my face shape is square. I was thinking of getting a haircut with a bangs that is actually not short, but kind a anppy and have my side layers. Do u think I will look great with that.
Hard to tell without a photo…best bet is to bring our most current issue to the salon and have your stylist pick out a few styles that would work best…then it’s up to you!
I have a round face and have had short for quite a while now. I am trying to grow it out just long enough to put in a pony tail…will shoulder length and side swept bangs be ok for my face shape? I also have really thick hair, naturally wavy hair.
Hi, Ashley!
Soft layers would look fabulous on you as they would remove some of the bulk from your thick hair. Sideswept bangs are very flattering for your face shape.
