THE NEW COUNTRY-POP PRINCESS
Cady Groves’ first album is a testament to changes. Written shortly after the singer moved to Los Angeles, CA, the CD catalogues Cady’s experiences and serves to soothe a broken heart. Working with producers such as Busbee, Sean Douglas and newcomers Ryan and Nolan, Cady has created an album the showcases her honest lyrics and signature twang. Sophisticate’s got a chance to sit down with Cady to talk about life, love and hair!

How would you describe the vibe of your music?
Well, my old music is really acoustic because I couldn’t afford a band! It sounds so different now. It’s not that I’ve changed my sound, I can just finally afford the sound I want! Now, my music is really poppy, but it still has its Cady elements. I’m from Oklahoma, so I want to include a little banjo in every song!
Your hair looks amazing! Are you a natural brunette?
I am a natural brunette. My mom has fire-engine red hair, and so does my sister. We have seven kids in my family, and half of them have red hair! My hair is definitely brown, but it does have a little red in it.
Will you ever experiment with other hair colors?
When I was in high school, my mom hated my hair because every day I’d put streaks in it! My favorite combination was “caterpillar,” and I would go to the beauty salon and spend all my paychecks on it. I’d get red, blonde and caramel and dark brown streaks, and I just thought it looked so good—it didn’t! Ever since then, I just let my natural color come in and I love it!

What’s your take on bangs?
Bangs are my signature thing. I’ve had the same hairstyle since I was 14! Bangs work well with my face, and I love to wear them swept to the side. I tried out straight bangs a while ago, but I only liked them for a day and totally freaked out later!
What are some of your favorite styling products?
I’m really simple, and I like to stay with what works. I love a good old-fashioned comb, and I’m a true fan of backcombing—it will never go out of style for me. I also love a good hairspray that’s not heavy and sticky.
What are your must-have makeup items?
Eyeliner is my main thing. I need eyeliner and blush! I have freckles, so I don’t use a lot of cover up. I also don’t use a lot of powder because it makes me feel like I’m wearing a mask. I just want to make my eyes and cheekbones pop, and that is all I really need!
